Hi! Tissue engineer here. Scar tissue isn't actually dead at all, in fact it's surface is more alive than regular skin. Normal skin layers cells with them dying off and forming a protective barrier about 7/8ths of the way up. So the skin you see is actually dead cells. This is all gone in healed 3rd degree burns, with a thinner protective barrier before you get to the living tissue. It still definitely holds up that bacta, merely providing optimal conditions for natural healing, would not heal the scar tissue beyond just being healthy scar tissue. What's gone is gone and only that specific tissue remembered how to grow back properly. Vader would need skin transplants for that. Idk how advanced tissue engineering is in the swu, but today we could definitely improve his condition. Maybe he elects to be in agony because else he would be left alone with the aforementioned mental anguish?
@justinklugTV2 жыл бұрын
Vader would also be guaranteed to be suffering from chronic itch and chronic pain; neurological pathologies. If bacta can't be expected to cure something like diabetes, it wouldn't alleviate the phantom itch and pain he would feel from his healed 3rd degree burns. The nerves in your skin go all the way to your spine before you reach the actual nerve cells. This means Vader still has the same amount of neurons that usually would interpret sensations, except the majority of them have had their lines of communication brutally destroyed. This leaves the affected areas permanently without any form of real sensation, while at the same time leaves your peripheral nervous system only able to tell your brain constant incorrect sensory information. This hurts, that burns, my missing leg itches, all day, everyday, forever. #SupportBurnWoundResearch

Just wanted to add some information here. The Canon description of Bacta is this: Bacta was a mixture of kavam and alazhi bacteria combined with ambori fluid and a type of barley known as Vratixia renanicus. Promoting rapid regeneration of organic compounds, bacta could be used in a variety of both critical and noncritical medical situations. Described as being warm to the touch, the bacta liquid could aid in the healing of concussions, internal organs, and broken ribs. Furthermore, it could be placed in small dishes to help regrow fingernails, mend cuts, burns, and other injuries. Due to its "one-size fits all" use in medical applications, it was a highly prized and commonly used medical treatment for most, if not all, injuries. Bacta could also knit together broken bones. Despite its highly regenerative properties, some individuals harbored negative feelings towards the substance, finding its viscosity somewhere between liquid and slime. Additionally, most bacta patients felt as if they were being swallowed alive upon being submerged in the substance. As such, most doctors injected sedatives first, while subsequent waves of relaxation would slowly overcome the patient, sending them into a meditative state. While most retained consciousness, the combination of drugs and bacta commonly lead patients to feeling like they were drifting into another world, with some comparing it to being in a mother's womb. Upon emerging from the liquid, many would describe feeling worse for a few days due to the loss of serenity precipitated by the substance. However, some would find the opposite to be true, describing their bodies as feeling light and free from pain. In order to allow a patient to retain normal functions, a breathing apparatus was provided to the individual along with specialized sensors that allowed the doctor to monitor their patients' bodily functions while submerged. Also, it is referenced in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" (both the movie and the book) that in the safety of his compound on Mustafar, Darth Vader would often have his suit removed and submerge himself in a bacta tank in order to heal the pain caused by his injuries. Vader also hoped that with continued bacta use, his lungs might be healed, freeing him from the breathing apparatus that he was forced to use. The Legends description of Bacta is this: Bacta was an organic chemical substance that consisted of gelatinous, translucent red alazhi and kavam bacterial particles that were mixed within a colorless, viscous fluid known as ambori. When a patient was exposed to bacta, the bacterial particles within sought out wounds and promoted rapid tissue regeneration while preventing the emergence of scar tissue. Bacta was often thought of as a "miracle fluid" and seemed to be effective against almost every type of injury and ailment across an incredible cross-section of species throughout the galaxy. It was considered the best medicine available anywhere, replacing the previously used kolto. Bacta could be administered via disposable bacta patches, direct injection, consumption (via bactade), a salve, a Bio-Bacta tank, or submersion in a standard bacta tank. For bacta immersion, the patient would be clothed in either just white shorts or a white sleeveless top and briefs depending on the person's gender. The method of administration depended on the severity of the wounds. It was imperative that bacta be applied in a solution of clear fluid which mimicked the body's own vital fluids. Bacta tanks came in two varieties: large tanks for installation in medical facilities, and portable collapsible tanks for emergency use. Field tanks required patients to lie on their backs or stomachs while the bacta was run out and in again through filters. Bacta had a cloying fragrance and a lingering sour taste that was reminiscent of flat or stale lum. It reputedly stayed in the mouth and nasal cavity for weeks after immersion in a tank. The patch left a somewhat weaker-smelling residue. As for its potency in Legends, Bacta was produced in various strengths and potencies based on many different factors. A batch's quality depended upon how the various ingredients were blended, the site where the ingredients were produced, and the Vratix Verachen that oversaw the blending. As Thyferra was the source of almost all the bacta in the galaxy while it was produced under the Imperial-backed duopoly of Xucphra and Zaltin, it was also the source of the strongest bacta. Such high-quality product was generally not exported; if it was, it was sold at incredibly high prices. Export-quality bacta was, typically, nowhere near as effective, meaning that more grievous injuries required longer exposure in order to be properly treated and healed.
@deathstrike2 жыл бұрын
Also, Bacta was entirely organic for most of the continuity of the SW Universe. However, and I cannot recall where I read this, but it seems that by the rule of Darth Krayt and his voice Darth Wryylock, Bacta was able to be synthetically created, albeit at a slightly reduced healing rate and that naturally produced Bacta was still highly prized. As for Darth Vader, it was probably just that Palpatine kept such a strict watch on him, that a long stay in the Bacta tank would have been impossible as Palpatine would have sensed his healed body. Also, Vader was offered another suit in Legends, however he actually refused it because he was unsure if he would lose his connection to the Dark Side as the new suit supposedly required a brain transference to the new suit. As a final note, Vader DID relax in his castle on Mustafar and Vjun often working on his TIE Advanced Prototype, or meditating as the video said in what little time he could be in the Bacta Tank or in his hyperbaric chamber occasionally eating.

@@deathstrike Thank you, both of you, for adding this. I was wondering how far I'd have to scroll before someone mentioned that Bacta is made from bacteria. Something I'm surprised not to see mentioned, though, is that a big reason he refused the upgrades and new suit is Anakin did not TRUST Palpatine, and for good reason. Palpatine never stopped trying to come up with new ways of controlling his apprentice, even when it hampered his effectiveness and blunted his utility. Vader noticed early on that his suit would conduct Sith Lightning, and correctly surmised that this was a deliberately designed killswitch. The only way Palpatine ever offered to remove this handicap was by replacing it with worse ones, the most notable example being essentially a Greivous-like droid exoskeleton with an actual friggin' switch that the Emperor could use to just... shut him off. It's a little baffling, honestly, that Palpatine would even try to pull one over on someone as mechanically adept as Anakin. Did he have so much faith in Imperial Engineering that he really believed they could design a suit with such cunningly hidden control mechanisms that even Anakin would never suspect they were there? Or was it just hubris, causing him to underestimate his apprentice, or overestimate his own ability to cloud his judgement with pain? Before anyone says anything, I know it's been almost a year. Sorry, I just couldn't resist. :)

@@thewoundedjester Quite welcome, it's always good when other add to the thread, thus adding subtlety to the SW Lore. We never knew the full extent of Palpatine's powers, nor how much of Darth Plagueis (Hugo Damask) teachings and knowledge that Palpatine still possessed. We knew Plagueis was incredibly powerful and very knowledgeable about the Dark Side of the Force. So it's safe to assume Palpatine kept enough tabs on Vader that he couldn't almost breathe without permission. I think Palpatine knew that if Vader had found what Plagueis had learned about controlling midichlorians, Vader could have either transferred himself to a freshly cloned and injury free Anakin Skywalker. Or at the very least with his knowledge of building droids, he could have probably had a suit that was both comfortable, and enhanced his already formidable abilities. And as soon as he put it on, Palpatine would have gone after him just as he did with Darth Maul and his brother Savage Oppress on Mandalore. He called Maul his "rival", promptly killed his brother, then thrashed Maul to where he was begging for mercy. Also I think Vader had simply given up. He may have just felt he deserved what he got because of killing Padmae. He wanted to be healed more, but as soon as he worked up the courage to do so, the guilt and Palpatine's "punishments" kicked in to defeat him all over again. Even as dark and twisted as Vader was, you couldn't help but feel a bit of sympathy for him for all he had suffered in a relatively short life. From hero to monster, from husband to widow, from leader to puppet. So in conclusion, I doubt anything could heal him be it bacta or his own son. Redeemed, but never healed at least physically.
@thewoundedjester Жыл бұрын
@@deathstrike Very good points, especially about his own self-loathing. I hadn't considered that, but you're absolutely right. The thing holding Anakin back the most is his certainty that he deserves to suffer. Perhaps this is what makes him so strong in the Dark Side, at a point where many other Sith are experiencing diminishing returns: he may not truly believe in the Sith, but he certainly believes he truly deserves his torment. Viewed through that lens, everything- his refusal of Bacta, his unwillingness to modify his own suit for comfort, his fear of serenity during meditation- begins to make perfect sense. It's not about the power it brings, the pain is the entire point. Even his own son's forgiveness couldn't convince him otherwise, it was only the realization that his children were about to share his pain that changed his mind. Then again, in the end, perhaps it took both.

It’s in the great Vader comics that indeed Sidious did have far more advanced medical procedures that he could of used on his apprentice. Sidious was so angry after finding the burnt Anakin that he didn’t even allow Vader any painkillers on the operation table and that it was Sidious who used Dark side energy to drain the life of Padme to keep Vader alive, which is why the droids had no answers to why Padme was dying on em after giving birth? After all this Sidious purposefully used less than adequate technology in Vader’s suit and life support and he made it susceptible to electric shocks on purpose in case he ever felt like turning on Sidious as is the way of the Sith. Long post I know but in short you could say that Sidious went the extra mile in using extraordinary Sith dark magic in keeping Vader alive and that he was right to keep Vader in this state to carry out his duties as an attack dog and that anything more, then its frightening to think how powerful Vader would of been🤯

In some of the legends extended universe stories I read years a go, if Vader wanted to he could have healed from his injuries. The key was cloning tech. He could have had cloning specialist grow everything from cloned limbs, cloned skin, and cloned organs. He could have had all the surgeries to attach all the new material to his body seamlessly. He would have looked just like his previous Anakin Skywalker self. For a short time at least. Cloned body parts are ridiculously expensive but Vader didn’t lack for money. There were two reasons he didn’t go that route. 1. All that pain and anger fueled his power in the dark side. He didn’t want to give that up. 2. Dark side energy has a deteriorating effect on the body. The more you use the dark side the more decrepit you look and become. It’s the reason Palpatine looks so disgusting. It didn’t make sense in Vader’s mind to have all that cloned material grown, have the painful surgeries to implant it and all for the dark side to destroy the new flesh anyway. It would just be a constant cycle of surgeries. Cloned flesh isn’t as resistant to dark side energy as natural flesh. He stayed like he was and compensated the best he could for his handicaps.

Bacta tank for healing aside, another thing that's lingered in my mind that has been brought up a few times before: Vader not wishing to upgrade his suit to become even more powerful. I heard the reasonings behind his choice not to and kept thinking: Why didn't Vader take a note or two from Darth Bane? It was said Bane used armor that caused him immense pain and suffering thus strengthening his ties to the Dark Side while in battle. I am surprised Vader never thought to alter said upgrade suit with similar means? But that's my two credits on this.
@skullstompn2 жыл бұрын
There are many reasons to why he didn’t upgrade the suit but I think one of the main ones has to do with Palpatine and it’s because he designed it. One of the suits greatest weaknesses is lightning and Palps made it that way to essentially keep Vader on a leash if he steps out of line, If he allow him to have a suit that works, like you said, like Darth Bane’s, and doesn’t include the lightning limitation, he’ll be stronger of course, but then Palps would have lost his leash, or maybe Vader thinks it’s to cool looking to even need upgrade😂

If he did get restored I doubt he'd be able to look at himself in a mirror after everything he's done it's far easier for him live behind a mask and lie to himself that vader and anakin are two different people. Also, Vader made modifications to his suit, (at least in Legends) where it his limbs would assist with activating his muscles and tendons that did remain with electric shocks and jolts. This is how he was able to bulk up and why he was so much physically stronger than most of his opponents. He also later adjusted his lower leg limbs so that they wouldn't catch on the pants covering his legs and restrict his movements so much. He later did the same with his cybernetic hands as they initially lagged behind his actual mental commands. If I were Vader, I would've at least tried to augment the armor to the point that any outside electrical interference would be ineffective. Maybe a small electromagnetic field generator that repells electrical waves, save for the ones that allow his suit to function properly. But most definitely restore his mobility to its former glory. In some comics, Darth Vader still has his full range of motion however this was in between RoTS and NH, when he was younger.

Yeah, pretty much, same with Kolto from Legends (a similar substance that was made obsolete by bacta due to kolto not being as potent) All it really does is speed up the already existing processes, which is at least guaranteed to prevent you from bleeding to death if nothing else.

Cloning new limbs is probably possible but its just cheaper to get a prosthetic thats as good. For Vader the dark side would have corrupted and killed the cloned bits and requiring regular replacement.

Speeding up recovery rather than regeneration is an excellent explanation. Also it is cannon that in the SW universe they do not have a medical procedure for "regrowing limbs," like Doc Conners in Spider-man. Instead they have highly advanced prosthetics, shown by Vader, Luke, Darth Maul, etc.

I always thought that Vader’s wounds never fully healed was because Palpatine denied him any medical treatment that would have eased the pain, since Bacta can only help so much, as a sort of punishment for his failure on Mustafar, leaving him confined to his suit and robbed of his full potential as a Sith. Turns out Vader wanted to remain in constant pain to strengthen his connection to the Dark Side.

I've always found the inner workings of the Force to be quite Interesting, and one question that has always intrigued me is why Bacta didn't work on Darth Vader. It's possible that Vader's self-hatred played a role in preventing his body from healing, as he had no interest in achieving immortality like his master. In fact, before Luke Skywalker entered his life, Vader's sole purpose was to serve his master until his eventual death. However, it's worth noting that the Force is capable of miraculous things, and we do know that Vader has used the light side ability of Force heal on at least one occasion in Legends Material. Ultimately, it's an interesting theory, and one that I find quite believable given Vader's depressed and melancholic nature.

One of the reasons I thought he wouldn't want to be healed is as a sort of penance to punish himself for what he did since there is still some good in him in the end. Vaders facial scars, especially under his eyes, are a direct homage to The General in 'Hidden Fortress'. The General had been a loyal vassal to a cruel Lord; the Lord had the General tortured and mutilated over an imagined insult. "You caused me to lose face, so I will destroy yours!" This same General has a last-second change of heart and allows the Princess (and the gold to finance a revolt!) to escape the evil Lord. You can see why 'Hidden Fortress' is one of Lucas favorite movies...

So, I was having a conversation with a friend of mine, if Vader had the resources of the emperor of the Galaxy at his disposal, why wasn't medical cloning an option? As I understand it, the force is an inherently biological entity, hence why despite the fact that the medichlorians can be detected and measured, the effects of the Force cannot be, so there are no force sensitive droids. Wouldn't cloning up some new lungs, eyes, and ears have helped boost that 80% power cap?
@plasmakaefer2 жыл бұрын
I believe that it is possible (though super expensive, but as you already said money isnt the problem for him) but first of all he did not want to, as it would probably hinder his connection to the dark side if he was not in constant pain, then he would probably also have to replace these things as they are not "midichlorian cloned" if you get what I mean, which in return means that the dark side would corrupt said replacements, AND most importantly I think, he just cannot look in his own face in a mirror. I mean you have to remember the man is just completely mentally broken to the point where he has his Vader "Persona" for him to basically justify all the things he did and with that came the benefit that he could hide behind that Persona and mask. At least that is my opinion on that, sorry for the text wall, lol.

I've always felt like the Star Wars universe had more advanced medicine that we do in our world. As such, since we are capable of growing artificial skin, why wouldn't they do the same for Vader? You know, just knock him totally unconscious, perform a full skin replacement, go for a dip in bacta to help heal the transplanted skin, and viola. You would have a healed and more capable Vader than you would otherwise. The old idea that you couldn't clone someone with a high midichlorian count went out the window with the cloning of the emperor, so I could only see this as a benefit.

I always assumed he used the Bacta because his suit would cause sores in much the same way prosthetic limbs will on people if the don't wear protective covers. A much better question is why Vader never cloned himself replacement parts. Cloning clearly exists in the SW universe, he could clone graft donation skin, replacement limbs, bones, organs, etc (assuming just transferring his consciousness to an outright cloned body is a skill Palpatine kept to himself). Even if the suit grants him armor and enhanced strength, there's no reason it couldn't if his limbs were whole. If nothing else, grow replacement lungs to get rid of the biggest disadvantage Vader has (why no one other than Obi-Wan ever thought to attack the breathing circuitry is beyond me).

I can't think of any instances where Bacta was able to regrow limbs (but I could be wrong here, there's a lot of media, both canon and otherwise I haven't read or watched). I think this is the most important part of Darth Vader's existing state. In almost all cases where limbs were lost (in the movies or shows I've seen at least), Bacta was never used to restore those limbs. Darth Vader only has one of his four limbs and quite a bit of other mechanical stuff to assist him in just standing up and moving. Don't get me wrong, Darth Vader is terrifyingly powerful and almost all of his media shows him to be so. But it's also noted that his "incompleteness" as a result of his fight with Obi Wan resulted him having been severely limited afterwards concerning his overall potential as a force user. It seems "wholeness" or "completeness" is part of the Force's award. Not to say there haven't been many Jedi or Sith who've been forced to modify their own bodies as a result of being wounded in battle, they still remain powerful. But Vader never achieved the greatness that even Palpatine thought he would in terms of power.

My two cents. If i recall corectly, pain is the key source Anakin uses to empower himself on the dark side. For sure, he porpusely heals just enough to keep the pain manageable, and allow him to do his work with minimal deterrance. I also theorize two things. First, the pain is enough to remember his failures, the treason he felt from those he cherished. Ergo, to remember what means to be Darth Vader. Second, fear. He is afraid to heal fully and lose what keeps him sharp, what keeps him focused. He fears see himself as Anakin once more will make him weaker. He barely feeds himself, too. The lack of nutrition might cause his healing on bacta to be slowed down, and he does it on purpose.

How does a society as advanced as the SW galaxy not have some kind of advanced stem cell treatments or cloned body part replacement? For Vader, it's because he was shown as he is at a time when such stuff was really not even in the real of science fiction yet, so kind of understandable in order to maintain continuity between trilogies and shows with him in them. Kamino was basically the only planet to have a successful full person cloning program in effect, but there had to be other worlds that looked into rebuilding bodies with cloned replacement parts. For force sensitives, midiclorian cloning was kind of established as difficult to impossible to do in the Force Unleashed games, so maybe that's the answer. Since everything in the SW galaxy is connected to the force, and has some level of midiclorians, maybe it's just insanely difficult to create living cloned tissues. Cells being taken and converted to Stem Cells and then stimulated to grow into specific tissues should still be a feasible option though, with the level of tech on display. Heck, I'm surprised that no one else has gone the route of the ancient Sith and used science rather than Sith Alchemy/Sorcery to create hybrid slave soldiers or super-soldiers that combine the DNA of numerous sentient and animal species to create ultimate specimens for specific purposes, even if such things are officially banned by the Empire or either Republic. They wouldn't even necessarily need to be slaves, there could be plenty of inhabitable worlds with no native sentient race that some science organization seeds with a super species, either to just see how they adapt and grow in the new environment, or to develop a super civilization that they may be somewhat in charge of and guide it to achieve whatever their end goal is.
@josephthibodeau97252 жыл бұрын
Just imagine a more or less human species but maybe like 7-8 feet tall instead of 5-6. Maybe having muscle, bone and connective tissue an order of magnitude stronger than what humanity has. And a complex series of genes related to aging to allow for fast initial maturation and rapid reproductive capability but then those genes becoming dormant at maturity, with something like Yoda's species coming online to regulate aging from then on, while still maintaining human level reproduction rather than something more elf like. Perhaps using people strong in the force as the initial test subjects to ensure a race of force sensitives with an abnormally high physical prowess level. Certain animal genes could be used for both more sensitive senses as well as new senses that humans don't have. And using species with a high ability to regenerate lost limbs or damaged tissues, any injury could be healed more quickly with something like bacta, but still heal scar free even without as long as enough nutrients and a safe environment is available. Arm this species with something like Cortosis or Beskar battle armor and heavy Masers or Blasters and a lightsaber and you have a tough to beat army of super beings. Perhaps even augment their minds with genes from hyper intelligent sentient races and now they are gonna become technological powerhouses too. Or forgo the rare elements and use some Durasteel alloy that is energy weapon resistant, but make the armored suits powered systems more like a Spartan's battle armor, with atmospheric filtering to stop biological weapons or chemical weapons from being an effective deterrent.

I imagine it is essentially Lactated Ringers(electrolyte solution) mixed with various amino acids, perhaps contained in AAT's(amino acid transporter); and a steroid or vasodilator to make the skin just porous enough to allow transit to arterioles. Combined with an O2 rich air mixture from the mask to help energize your body. Yeah, you'd heal faster, but not be regrowing any limbs or replacing scar tissue. Although, whether being submerged is superior to having an IV while lying in bed is uncertain. Maybe? So, it's basically a mixture of the most crucial components needed to heal. Like leaving a pile of building materials next to a damaged house for the owners to rebuild. Why he doesn't get skin grafts is clearly his conscious decision. Perhaps he wants to be punished for Padme's death.
