ScreenPrism I love your GofTs symbolism vids a whole lot but why include House Stark as 1 of the families seeking to take The Iron Throne from House Baratheon@8:28??? Robb Stark was the only participant in The War of The 5 Kings who wasn't interested nor did he even want The Iron Throne, only vengeance & justice for his father's death and to rescue his sisters and to liberate the entire North from Lannister control!!!

Stannis to Davos, A Clash of Kings Renly offered me a peach. At our parley. Mocked me, defied me, threatened me, and offered me a peach. I thought he was drawing a blade and went for mine own. Was that his purpose, to make me show fear? Or was it one of his pointless jests? When he spoke of how sweet the peach was, did his words have some hidden meaning? Only Renly could vex me with a piece of fruit. He brought his doom on himself with his treason, but I did love him, Davos. I know that now. I swear, I will go to my grave thinking of my brother’s peach.

Stannis never sought revenge for anything, he sought justice. Stannis was one of the least emotional people in all of westeros. You can count the times Stannis was impulsive by the fingers on Davo's right hand.
@ms_scribbles
@ms_scribbles 7 жыл бұрын
You know, I'm starting to see that most book readers seem to base their view of Stannis on what others say about him, and what he lied to others about himself, rather than actually paying attention to Stannis' *actions*. I forget which book it is, but the prologue of one of them is ALL about Stannis whining and whining and bitching and pissing and moaning about how nobody loves him and weeeh weeeeh everyone loved my brothers more than meeeee, why won't they love meee, weeeeeeeeehhhhhhh. MY RIGHTS MY RIGHTS WEEEEEHHH! Sure, he's a cold dick to most people, but there's no justice or lack of emotion in him. If there was, he wouldn't bitch about his rights all the time. He's so desperate for some reputation, *any* reputation, that he'll hurt anyone and everyone around him just so he can say he's hard, but fair. But tell me, how much justice was in burning his in-laws alive, who hadn't done anything illegal? None.
@ChukN0rris
@ChukN0rris 7 жыл бұрын
I didn't say that Stannis has no feelings, but that he is one of the least likely people to display them openly. I have not read the books so I don't know the context of this whining, bitching, pissing and moaning, and "weeeh weeeeh", but it sounds like you have very strong opinions about it. I would likely consider Stannis point of view understandable, seeing that his conviction in his obligation to his people and the other way around is woefully under appreciated. I think the bitching about his rights you mention is what I'd call pressing his claim. When the Iron throne is your's by right and you have a reputation, and he does have reputation, to be both absolutely unyielding and a brilliant military strategist stating your claim carries a lot of weight. On the topic of burning his in-laws I have to admit that burning people is morally wrong but it is still just in that it was the consequence of their own choice not to renounce the seven despite Stannis order to do so, and knowing the consequences. Now, if pretty much anyone else had done the same thing in the same situation it wouldn't have been just but Stannis holds Himself to the very-same admittedly rigorous standards he applies to his subjects and that is what sets him apart. Even if he did bitch and moan, he always did his duty and after he became King he never asked more of his subjects than he himself would have been willing to give in their place.

@@ms_scribbles You horribly exaggerate. His "whining" as you say was probably one or two sentences simply stating facts that he was never popular. Actually your whole comment appears to be so toxicly whiny that I am not even surprised that you formed such a weird opinion about him in spite of reading the books. "how much justice was in burning his in-laws alive, who hadn't done anything illegal?" - If I am not mistaken this never happened in the books. The only ones who were burned alive by Stannis were deserters, rapists and other criminals. Stannis was a good man even in the TV show but some of his actions were twisted. To anyone who liked him in the TV show I definitely recommend to read the books. This is where his character truly "shines".

@@ms_scribbles I invite you to reread that prologue (In the second book a Clash of Kings) with the information we know about Stannis, Davos and more important for this case Melisandre. Mel can see things in the future and by the attitude Stannis displays in the chapter you can see it's... totally off to be honest, but you can join the pieces. Think about it like this, Mel knew that Cressen was going to poison her (So she took the antidote and wasn't affected by the poison thus being more powerful in the eyes of everyone after this) so she told Stannis about it, I am sure he didn't belive it but lets say she say something among the lines of "let it happen, and I will convince you of my power" and well Cressen DID poison Melisandre, and if we recall Stannis didn't woke him up (posible because he didn't want anything to happen) and after Mel stuff being prove truth he had nothing left but believe her and ultimatly confirm everything when Cressen tried to poison her. Just mentioning the prologue thing, the other stuff will take a lot of time.

Some symbolism I'm surprised you didn't mention: When Robert ascended to the iron throne, he added a crown to his house's sigil, but he didn't add it on top of the deer's head as you might expect, but around its neck. That is after all, what the crown is to Robert, it is not a triumphant thing that he wants to have, it is a noose around his neck that will eventually kill him.

From a historical perspective (and I know I'm not the first to notice this), have any of you noticed the comparisons between the Baratheon Brothers and the Brothers of the House of York (Edward, George, Richard)? -Edward IV/Robert: Both superb military commanders, physically strong and large in their prime (Edward still remains Britain's tallest king at 6'4!), and both won their crowns on the battlefield (The Trident is essentially the Battles of Towton and Tewkesbury rolled into one). Both their realms experienced some sense of peace while they ruled. And both got soft and fat towards the end of their reigns, and both were notorious womanisers. However whilst Robert was a poor politician and lived for the fight, Edward was an excellent administrator and took huge leaps in expanding Britain's prestige abroad. -George, Duke of Clarence/Renly: Both possessed charm and wit, as well as enjoying the benefits of court life and high society. However, both were quite naïve when it came to dealing with matters they thought would advance them into higher power (Renly rashly proclaims himself King, despite knowing Stannis to be the rightful king; George abandoned his brothers to join the Lancastrians in a futile gesture), and both pay dearly for their treason: Renly is assassinated by the Shadow demon, and George is soon executed for treason by being drowned in a barrel of wine, as well as being murdered by their own brothers. -Richard III/Stannis: Like Richard, Stannis was an excellent battlefield commander, and both were responsible for winning battles that enabled their brothers to keep both the Iron Throne and English Throne respectively. Both also felt that they felt unrewarded despite their many years of service. Both were also astute and incisive politicians as well, with a strong, albeit self-righteous sense of justice, honour and duty, and who rallies support in the north by defending it from invasion. Both also denounce their nephews as illegitimate, and thus are dragged into war soon enough. Also enjoy enduring legacies amongst GOT fans and Ricardians, with each group seeing them as the 'rightful king', and of being misunderstood amongst the other characters/figures of their own world.
@CathieSoli
@CathieSoli 5 жыл бұрын
However, Roberts children really WERE illegitimate, whereas Edward's were not. The only reason Edward's were declared such was because it was deemed a child couldn't rule the kingdom effectively and would be governed by the regent. That was the real reason Richard grabbed the crown for himself.

I love the little "rolleyes" that Melisandre does ^^ like "ok that was actually pretty funny". I remember when season 2 was coming out, I was hoping for a Baratheon bros alliance so much... they would have quickly ended the Lannisters together and could have fought the White Walker side by side with Robb Stark. Daenerys would have also helped out against the real enemy, and they could have received them with thousands of dragonglass tipped arrows volleys + dragons + all the Valyrian steel they could put together. Oh well, that would have been a completely different story I guess ^^'

Haven't seen anyone mention the fact that the crown is around the neck of the stag, instead of more commonly on it's head, almost as if it's choking itself. Showing that the crown, or the pursuit to obtain it, will lead to their strangulation or death. Also that it's intentionally put around it's own neck during the change of their sigil, showing their decision to go after their eventual death in the name of power is a fate chosen by themselves.

This is an old comment but the sigil was never changed. It was the old sigil of the Durrandon Storm Kings and thus the crown on the stag was always present throughout the histories of houses Durrandon and Baratheon.

How was Renly the most likable and beloved. I really loved Stannis. I loved his relationship with his daughter. Her death because his deranged obsession with the throne was probably the saddest moment on the show. He was probably the most suited to be king of the three. Tragic character.

The whole “Joffrey can’t be a Baratheon because he’s blonde” thing shows that they didn’t really understand biology back then. If Robert Baratheon is Hererozygous for Black hair, and Cersei is Homozygous for blonde, then they can have a blonde child. We know Joffrey is actually Jaime’s son but it’s not outside the realm of possibility for a lineage of black hair to end up with a blonde child, especially if their mother is blonde. Also this is more just a result of casting, but Robert Baratheon doesn’t have black hair, and neither Cersei nor Jaime have blonde hair. Considering how big a deal their hair color is in this show and the producers’ willingness to use a wig on Emilia Clark to make her blonde makes me wonder why this detail is so overlooked.

In the second book, A Clash of Kings, Stannis besieges his former (and Renly's seat) Storm's End to acquire one of Robert Baratheon's bastards, a boy named Edric. Robert slept with a cousin of Sleyse Florent (Stannis' wife) on Stannis' bed the day of Stannis' wedding, resulting in Edric. Being Robert's only acknowledged bastard, Renly raises Edric at Storm's End and gives the title of guardian to his man Cortney Penrose after Renly joins The Smalls Council. Because Edric is the spitting image of Robert, Stannis besieges Storm's End and plans on using Edric to prove his case to the people of King's Landing and The Lords of Westeros, that Joffery is a Lannister.

Literally everyone sired by a Baratheon male, regardless of the hair and eye colour of the mother, is described as tall, of strong frame, black haired, and blue eyed (even females have tall and robust frames in the case of at least Mya Stone). Baratheon males (at least, again Mya Stone is an example of a female who is the same) also tend to have certain personality traits in common even over their hundreds of years of history (maybe thousands as I will get to). Rogar Baratheon and his brothers, Ormund Baratheon, Borros Baratheon, Lyonel Baratheon, Robert Baratheon, Stannis Baratheon, even Renly Baratheon all have a strong self determination and stubborn implacability in their character, even if the nature, expression and focus of it differs from individual to individual. The Baratheons are descendants of the Durrandons from the marriage of Orys Baratheon and Argella Durrandon. Orys Baratheon also took the lands, sigil and words of House Durrandon as his own. Argilac Durrandon was named “the Arrogant” for a reason. And if we look at the story of the founder of House Durrandon (Durran Godsgrief) he was also a very stubborn man who defied the gods and took their daughter as his bride. The Baratheon character seems to have roots older than their House. Take note that this also means that the Durrandons and, by extension, the Baratheons supposedly have divine ancestry. We know that there is such a thing as supernatural genetics in the ASoIaF world. Houses with strong First Men origins like the Starks, Blackwoods and Reeds have greenseers and warging and such. Valyrians (Targaryens) have dragon dreams, coin flip and dragon taming. The Baratheons and their Durrandon forebears are an extremely old and powerful pair of houses that have origins in the Age of Heroes and supposed divine blood. More often than not their larger than life personalities and imposing physiques make them more akin to forces of nature than men. The takeaway from all this is that you shouldn’t bother to bring your punnet squares and arguments of dominant vs recessive into this discussion. The Baratheons are obviously intended to be supernatural.

A thing Ser Axell understands as little as he does war. Claw Isle would gain me naught... and it was evil, just as you said.” Stannis listens to all of his advisors, no matter how foolish he deems them, but always makes his own judgements and decisions. His teeth were grinding while Axell Florent was explaining his plan; he had already rejected it even before Davos spoke. He only bothered asking Davos’ opinion because he was still interested in whatever Davos had to say. Fyi there was a somewhat rational stance for Renyl's claim on the Throne... The seat of the head of House Baratheon is Storm's End (just like the seat of House Stark is Winterfell), and after becoming king Robert gave Storm's End to *Renly* not Stannis. And so this fed into Renly's claim for the Iron Throne: he felt, as the effective head of House Baratheon, he was next inline to the throne that was held *by* House Baratheon.
@RABartlett
@RABartlett 5 жыл бұрын
The thing is though, while the Baratheons are the royal household, they hold that claim via the admixture of Targaryen blood. Historically, the Targaryen heir apparent would be given Dragonstone, and it was not rescinded after Joffery's birth, whether because of Robert's carelessness, or his insistence at giving Stannis a prestigious but barren fiefdom as a white elephant. More than anything, Renly claims the throne through force of arms (Citing Robert's "usurpation") and Stannis's foreign religion (Which is funny, as Red Priest Thoros of Myr was an actual drinking buddy of Robert), and a plan to see Stannis dead on the battlefield, which would render the question of "stepping over" moot.
@AliKhan-pb8cd
@AliKhan-pb8cd 2 жыл бұрын
Stannis wasn't given storm's end bcs he was needed at dragonstone which was last stronghold of Targaryens, Robert needed someone like Stannis to held it not Renly who was a little boy during that time, that's how Renly got Storm's end. Also the seat of heir during Targaryen rule has been Dragonstone, so even then Stannis has a claim.

I must say, the Baratheon finally came back to their roots. Their founder was a bastard of the Targaryens that was given Storm's End. So now Gendry completes the circle once again, as a bastard fighting under the Targaryens.

Gendry is the only hope that we got. And of course people love him for his personality(kind, brave, lovely, funny af, clever, polite, fury, strong, DOES NOT FIGHTING OVER THRONE.... ok he's much better than any of them.... )

Robert Baratheon: "I've got SEVEN Kingdoms to rule! ONE KING, SEVEN KINGDOMS!" Well Robert, you should know that there WERE 7 Kingdoms upon Aegon's Conquest (only 6 of which were conquered before Aegon's death). By the time Robert came into power, there were essentially NINE "kingdoms" (actually "regions") which are as follows: The North, The Riverlands, The Iron Islands, The Vale, The Reach, The Westerlands, The Crownlands, The Stormlands, and Dorne. Do you damn homework Robert. You've got NINE regions to rule, one King, NINE regions.

no that is not true. the riverlands and the crownlands never had kings, they belonged to the kingdom of the iron islands. so 7 kingdoms and 9 regions.

Dorn is a principality , not a Kingdom. the Riverlands and the Iron islands used to be one kingdom under Harren the black. After the crispy pasta of Harrenhal, the regions were split turning the both into Lordships. But even Aegon the Conqueror claimed the title as lord of the 7 Kingdoms, even though Dorn was Independent until 200 yrs later where a marriage brought them under the throne.

All 3 Baratheon brothers (Robert, Stannis and Renly) combined reflect the complex personality of their great-grandfather, Lyonel Baratheon. He was the Laughing Storm. Like Robert, he was a great warrior. Like Stannis, he respected honor and justice fighting for Ser Duncan the Tall in a Trial by Combat. Like Renly, he was loved by the people, tossing his ransoms earned in jousts to the common people in attendance. And like all three, he was ready to rebel if he felt he was wronged by the current king.

The crown was always there. The sigil was taken from a former royal house of the stormlands. Orys baratheon killed the king, married the kings daughter, moved into her castle, adopted her house words and sigil.

I wish there was more of the Baratheon's in the show. I feel that they're very non-important through the eyes of the writers and it shows

You obviously haven't read the books. He was just as much of a power-hungry, whiny shit in the show as in the books. Actually, for a while he was slightly better thanks to Stephen Dillane's great acting.

I think you forgot that by putting a 'crown' on the stag's neck, it is the very thing that chokes and kills them. With Robert Baratheon, his title as King is the reason for his descent (his vices - drinking so much that he ends up getting injured due to the inability to fight back). With Stannis and Renly, it is their very fight for the crown that similarly leads them towards and their action and kills them.

Love the Takes videos, one of the most underrated channels on KZbin hands down. I never really thought about Renly’s stag being gold and green as a symbol of his allegiance and being joined to House Tyrel...always just assumed it was because it’s stated a handful of times that Renly’s favourite colours are green and gold, and he’s known for flamboyancy and his luxurious taste.

A shame The show made Stannis be as unpopular as possible with the Shireen shit.D&D also added more unnecessary unlikable moments to other characters like Jaime killing his cousin and that stupid Cersei sex scene next to Joffreys body luckily Jaime still is for the most part liked. Stannis on the other hand they failed miserably.

Really? Stannis was a shit in the books, always whining about his "rights" and how poor baby isn't loved by anyone. He's just as power mad in the books as he is in the show, he was just better at lying to himself and everyone around him about how he didn't *really* want it. Yeah, sure, that's why he had his brother murdered through black magic and burned his in-laws alive, and how he was planning on murdering his own nephew because he was told he'd get power from it. He was garbage in the show and garbage in the books. I shed no tears for that little manchild.
