I have watched almost every KZbin analysis/retrospective on Twin Peaks and ScreenPrism, your work is quite a few cuts above anything else out there. Kudos to Marta Ruggeri for the thoughtful dissertation about this amazing TV series that I have been hypnotized by since it originally aired. Subscribing to your channel, keep the excellent work coming. I recall sitting in a room at a production company a decade ago with Mark Frost, we were interviewing him for another project and we chatted a bit about Twin Peaks and what his and David's plans were for it. At the time, he said he doubted it would ever be back, glad he was wrong.

What's kind of freaky is that they wrote the pilot episode BEFORE they had any idea where they were going to shoot the damned thing. THEN they scouted locations, and found them all in very close proximity to each other around Snoqualmie, etc. That train car shot still gives me the willies.

You know they did a good job with the characters when Diane, a character who is never even shown, feels real. The way Dale talks about/to her with his recordings even make her likable. Because if Cooper's fond of her then she must be an okay lady.

The Frost/Lynch connection is magical. WIthout Frost, the show would have been too weird and dark to go on that long and be loved by the masses. And without Lynch, it would have been too by-the-numbers like other good (but not watershed) TV of its time. It's like when peanut butter met jelly.

Absolutely. It's why I didn't enjoy Fire Walk with me as much as the show. It has the surreal Lynchian weirdness in spades, amplified even more than the show due to it's lessened censors but that's really... all it was. Twin Peaks was brilliant because it eased you into the weirdness very slowly and very carefully. It takes 3 full episodes before we get to Cooper's dream sequence. But before that it goes to great lengths to establish compelling and interesting storylines and quirky, likable characters so that when it hits you with a face full of David Lynch your're so gripped by the world that it doesn't turn you off, it just makes you want to watch further. It's brilliantly done and something I'd like to see more of. Too many Auteur filmmakers can get too carried away with their ideas and neglect plot and character in the process. David Lynch himself is guilty of this and that's why Mark Frost deserves more credit than he gets.

thejobloshow Twlight Zone was a show far ahead of its time, and deserves credit for having great stories with twist endings, Twin Peaks actually changed the perception of what could be done with television. For example, it was a show where if you missed one episode and tried to watch the following week, you would be completely lost. It was also one of those shows where not all mysteries would be answered. Without it, shows like The X-Files, Lost, WESTWORLD and many others would not have been given the chance they got to be made.

Despite all its greatness, Lynch didn't manage to raise funds for Mulholland Drive, which was intended to be a TV series. A few years later and HBO and the like would have fought for it. Lynch, trendsetter and ahead of his time.

Most people don't know that the reason for those repeating motifs that don't seem to change is that Angelo didn't want the bother of scoring episode after episode. He delivered a set of about 50 cues, all worked out and recorded, that Lynch could use to score the series. Thus the themes always sound the same when they show up, because they _are_ the same.

I really do think that the 1st season of ‘True Detective’ drew influence from the style of ‘Twin Peaks’. That is a compliment as the first season was amazing to watch with the terrific characters and twisting story. It’s like David Lynch could’ve written it, but he didn’t yet Cary Fukunaga and his team gave off the feel without ripping off the show

Eh, besides the murder mystery aspect, idiosyncratic detective, and the occult/supernatural themes, they feel very different imo. TD has a lot more philosophical musings between the characters, is way more serious in tone, and sticks to a single genre. On the other hand, Twin Peaks can go from a Dawson’s Creek episode to an X Files episode in a single scene, and doesn’t seem as concerned about raising specific themes for the audience to consider. Twin Peaks The Return is a lot closer to TD, but even then, it’s still pretty different.

the show is not surreal. the characters in the show, doesn't know they are characters - although some of them have suspicions (the major fx). the 'magic' that surrounds the show, and creates the tension and the drama are us - the viewers. we want to see drama, so the creators make characters to bad things, so we can enjoy watching TV.

Twin Peaks was a lightning in a bottle. You cannot repeat something like this again. The show came at the absolute perfect time and ABC didn't know what they have.... and like all good things, it ended too soon. You came for the mystery but you stayed for the characters. And this is why you can still watch this show even after the reveal of who killed Laura Palmer. This is why that show and the whole vibe will always have a big place in my heart and it is one of the BEST things that was ever made for TV because it was so much more than just a show.

That's a good point about binge-watching. I binge-watched the series in 1992, when _Fire Walk with Me_ came out. I had missed the series on TV, only seeing one episode (the one where Josie died), and thinking WTF THIS MAKES NO SENSE, and dropping it. When I saw the film, I decided to go back and see the series, and rented the videotapes. Watched it over a three-day weekend. That was a SERIOUS mindfuck, believe me. Been a fan ever since.

Yes yes yes. I tried to explain all of this to people 27 years ago when I was in high school. I couple years later, I remember a college professor scoffing when another student mentioned it in the same breath as "quality" pop culture storytelling. I've finally become old enough to ignore stupid people and their stupid opinions. I WAS FUCKING RIGHT ABOUT TWIN PEAKS. There could be nothing more satisfying than knowing that without Twin Peaks, there would be no Northern Exposure, no X-Files, no Lost, no Fringe, no Breaking Bad, no Sopranos, no VERITABLE FLOOD of shows over decades trying to strike a cinematic, tonal, and mysterious chord of absolutely solid, artistic writing. I remember recording every episode in order because it would be so much fun to watch them all in order in a time where there was no "bingeing" anything on television in any way--and I still fucking have those tapes (I have no other tapes from that time; none)! Good god I'd like to march right down to every idiot who said Twin Peaks was nonsense and shout, "Oh yeah? It was such nonsense that it spawned decades of better and better television to the point that fucking SHOWTIME is producing 18 brand new episodes 27 years later! Twin Peaks has literally spawned ITSELF, fuckers! That's how bad it was!" So far ahead of its time it CREATED the future of television. (Sorry about the language. I'm still mad about it being cancelled all those years ago.)

Thanks. My uncharacteristic outburst reminds me of a Harlan Ellison anecdote. Harlan's a very famous science fiction writer, and (I believe) in the '50s a reporter wrote a piece about him and his other teenage friends who believed we would soon land a man on the moon. The reporter's piece was condescending, and made them seem like a bunch of goofballs with their heads in the clouds. After we landed on the moon, he marched down to that newspaper (at that point Harlan was pretty famous as an author) to cuss this guy out...only to find out the guy had died. So for the last 50 years Harlan has been telling people this story and what a MORON this guy was. (Ray Bradbury has a similar story, where he discussed at fancy dinner parties how man would soon land on the moon, only to be patronized and scoffed at. He politely took all their telephone numbers and told them he would call them when it happened. And in '69, on that day in July, he called them all and said, "This is Ray Bradbury you bastard!" and hung up.)

Twin Peaks holds a special place in my heart. I was born in January of 1990 to a single mother who simply didn't have the means to provide for me. I was adopted on the day I was born, and my birth mother had a really hard time with that; going to the hospital to give birth to a new child and then coming home empty-handed. Part of the way she dealt with the loss, guilt, and uncertainty about my future, she immersed herself in this show when it first aired. For those first few months, this show is how she got through every week. I was encouraged from a young age by my adoptive parents to keep in contact with my birth mother, and we've maintained a close relationship. She sent me the DVD box set for my birthday several years ago and told me about how much it had helped her. I don't own a DVD player anymore, but I still refuse to get rid of the box set.

Not only did it inspire shows with a central enigma surrounded by things odd and mysterious, it also helped air shows that were odd and eccentric without a central mystery such as Northern Exposure, filmed not far down the road from Twin Peaks. I remember just flipping through the channels when I landed on the pilot episode. I hadn't heard anything about it before it premiered. It was just so weird that I loved it. It was the water cooler talk of the time. Season 2 kind of took a nosedive halfway through.

This is actually very well-done. Like a good term paper. And it certainly does explain what was and is still so important about revolutionary shows like Twin Peaks and Seinfeld. That by obliterating the stock decades-long formulas for TV drama and sitcom, certain shows truly elevated TV to higher art forms.

love this show. watched it back in the day when it originally aired. there really was nothing like it on TV. I rewatched it as an adult about 10 years ago and I was struck by the depiction of grief with the parents. So many times I watch law and order or shows like that and people barely seem upset when someone they know dies. I recall an episode of twin peaks, maybe when they are first told of Laura's death of the parents just barely able to get up off the floor, crying and screaming

Great review - as someone who watched the original as a high school student it really was amazing television compared to what other choices you had. We just didn't have the options back then - obviously no netflix, social media, etc. It really was the first instance of event television, the first show you HAD to record on the VCR if you knew you'd miss it. Looking back there's so much cheese in the show but it's balanced by truly some of the most disturbing stuff I've ever seen on TV. I can't believe it's coming back, I'm so excited but I hope it's embraced by a new audience, one that has about 30 other awesome TV shows to pick from.

For anyone who loves Twin Peaks, I would definitely recommend checking out American Gothic (1995-'96). It's very similar to Twin Peaks, and, in my opinion, it's the only drama that can rival Twin Peaks in terms of artistic quality. The atmosphere, the mood, the visuals, the music, etc. is so great. Such high quality art. And yeah, the music, like I said, is amazing. Again, just like Twin Peaks.

The 80s were both a dark time in movies and tv, there were so manny crappy shows consider classics like Dallas and full house, dumb ass movies like mannequin and weird science. Strangely 80s commercials and music videos were amazing and creative. The 90s really was the resurgence of the industry thanks to twin peaks. Nowadays tv is a legitimate art form, the quality of movies are a mixed bag but they're doing all right, commercials are dumb, and music video are still pretty great.

Angelo Badalementi owes much to Wagner and early film composers such as Bernard Herrmann for their development of the tehcnique you alluded to of leitmotif. This first appeared in the operas of Wagner, where themes or motifs were associated with certain moods or characters, and it was fascinating to see how this was used in Twin Peaks. When Audrey fell in love with Billie Zane (I've forgotten the name of his character) her music changed from sultry jazz to a slowly twanging guitar, full of mushy glissandi and note-bending. It was quite an experience to experience her character developments through the music. This was a fascinating review, thank you!

I remember my parents and aunt and uncle talking about this show years after the UK broadcasts even though I was only a baby during the original run. It's always piqued my interest as a media creator myself but I've never been able to actually watch it. It's on a long list but I think it's just about time it jumped the queue.
