Passing down swords - wonderful thing for long standing players, even if my own DM kinsa scoffs at me using basic longsword for 5th generation of characters, despite being lvl 14 priest (I just summon a flaming sword if I really need a magical weapon).

That's when the GM should make it aquire sympathetic magic from its owners...all devoted to a cause etc...it rubs off on things

This suggestion may be a slightly morally questionable and may invoke a significant sense of hatred among the PCs: Perhaps the GM could have the ancestor weapon sundered and they go on a quest to reforge it with better stats?
@mareczek00713
@mareczek00713 5 жыл бұрын
@@megamanstarforce4315 But why though? Nobody ever thought that sentiment is basically its own reward? I mean, it's like having an old car your family member driven before you and you remember it as a child - it's not fast or anything but you like it nonetheless. Plus, I typically play spellcasters and tanks, it's not like the sword sees that much insides of enemy bellies...

Personally if I were DMing, I'd let my players spend time maintaining and honouring a weapon from a fallen companion in order to bring out it's potential (every now and then give it a +1, maybe once per character or somesuch, or to gain access to those better stats if they were a bit too low level to have a +3 when they got it), that way treasuring the item, and spending down time maintaining it allow you and it to keep pace with everyone else. I feel that would reward roleplay enough to help the entire group get more into it, and to grow closer both in and out of game.

Why would any DM restrict alignment? I've never done that before and I don't know why I should?
@DHGameStudios
@DHGameStudios 5 жыл бұрын
@@Glaswalker1001 Afaik, it's pretty common. I guess it's a sort of first line of defense against "that guys", not that it stops them from being Chaotic "Neutral" Assholes anyway. My groups don't roll with it either. Your character can be as depraved as you would like, but it is a team game, and your character Must have a reason to cooperate with the rest of the party.
@DHGameStudios
@DHGameStudios 5 жыл бұрын
You should talk to your GMs about lifting such restrictions, or making an exception. Also, the Necromancy spell school isn't inherently evil, only raising undead is.

I mean I could imagine "That Guy" being a True neutral prick who just plays neutral in order to be a dick. TNP in all classes. Barbarian: Passive aggressive maniac rather then actively aggressive maniac who talks shit at the smallest of slights but really doesn't do much except talk because he's too afraid to risk his character to do anything interesting. Is very vindictive and will find very passive ways of getting back at other pc's Bard: Has no interesting opinions but still thinks every other opinion is wrong and often will be cowardly even though being one of the strongest classes in the game. Will mostly likely just use his high charisma to sleep with as many woman as possible to slow down progression and will constantly ask the name of random bartenders and barmaids. Cleric: Most likely chose this class because he didn't care or was maybe forced to. Will most certainly pick grave cleric and not heal anyone ever but themselves. Has no investment in the well being of their team mates, due to the character believing that nothing is really at stake because an afterlife exists Druid: Will flat out let his teammates die even if his intervention requires minimal effort. Like helping a teammate from falling off a ledge his hanging off of. Subscribes to the survival of the fittest mentality to the extreme with a mixture of lazy indifference to the point of spite. Fighter:Will actually probably do something but probably will also have a mercenary background and will try to constantly loot things first in order to sell it off the good loot to their teammates. Monk: Will be a pacifist to the extreme, yet not investing any points into an dialogue heavy proficients, or skills and will also most likely have a low charisma score. Paladin: Ignores any evil or really does no evil because hes true neutral and that means to do absolutely nothing and be boring. Will not help the team if he feels the odds are stack against him which is nearly always if the number count of enemies is even slightly higher then the party. Will be like the bard but will probably say something like Good and evil are just concepts. Ranger: Is mad that everyone else will probably be better then him because 5e hates ranger. Is mostly jealous of everyone else who isn't a ranger and will also be smug and also likely be a half elf. I mean he'll just generally be a passive asshole and wont do much but be a reminder that he exist. Pretty much has the status of peanut gallery. Rouge: Will steal everything like the fighter, but unlike the fighter will most likely keep it for themselves and will actively pick pocket his team mates and wont actually contribute in combat, except maybe get the last hit off an enemy whose nearly dead anyways. He won't kill npc's but he will make it actively hard to converse with them. Sorcerer: Will be very opinionated think he's the leader and will have an ego, yet if he was in charge your party will be doing nothing of interest because they just want to be leader to be leader. Warlock: Will most likely be archfey. Will mostly likely just have illusion spells or sleep spells. Will probably want to avoid every combat encounter. Wizard: Has an ego like the sorcerer. Will likely be a necromancer. Will likely jump at the chance to kill something no matter its creed, if they can justify it as a neutral action. Would most likely be chaotic evil given the chance, and will overall be creepy and have no real moral compass. Won't kill you if he cant justify it.

@@DHGameStudios Raising undead is not inherently evil, although many people would disagree given that undead are almost universally evil, or at the very least predatory. A necromancer may be of Neutral or even Good alignment, and they may even be Lawful Good, as being Lawful only constitutes adhering to a code of conduct. Of course you'd ideally want to adhere to local custom as much as possible to avoid conflict, but you may still act in accordance with your own beliefs if they somehow supercede them; if you're a healer and the local church has established a healing tax, you can rightly tell them to fuck off, break the law, and still be Lawful Good.

God I wish my players were like this honestly. It's always shenanigans with them, I'd like some serious roleplay. Most serious it got is when one character died and another couldn't bear it so much he thought it was some kind of illusion and threatened the rest of the party until our pally BASHED HIM OVER THE HEAD WITH HIS SHIELD, KNOCKED HIM OUT, AND DRAGGED HIM THROUGH TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CAVE. He still absolutely despises the pally, and the pally doesn't give a shit.
@gabewright5571
@gabewright5571 5 жыл бұрын
Update: he left because the only person keeping him attached to the party was forcibly removed from the world via falling off a dragon, but not before he poisoned the pally. Daja Throth, you were a great character. Gonna miss ya. Here's hoping Ahkrin Onikaan is just as good, if not better.

I have a drow hospitalier paladin of Sarenrae whose entire character theme, down to feat choice and oaths, is redeeming the irredeemable. Nobody is beyond saving unless they choose to be beyond saving. It's a lesson she knows well and spreads to other Always-Chaotic-Evil NPCs she finds in her travels.

I’ve only had this kind of good storytelling once from my players. Except the Wizards words have stayed with us, as a guidance of sort or a remembrance: “Do not cry for my death little one… Your father is waiting for me… Live your life to its fullest little one… and when you see us wherever we go you will see just the kind of man your father was to me… Remember my… story…” ever since then we’ve had a running theme, that mace is handed down to each person of that family. Even friends wield it for a time, inscribed on the Ebony shaft are the words “A light shining in darkness” in game time that made is over 160 years old. Still looks pristine

Reminds me of my Sorc Dragonborn Tiamat Cultist, got tricked into honor oath by Pally Dragonborn follower of Bahamut. Allowed to join their party if agree to protect the noble they're escorting. Fucking honor oaths, when you're even partially dragon. Party doesn't like it. Cleric wants to kill me in my sleep. Noble is scared proper shitless of someone who fanatically enjoys setting fire to EVERYTHING, and writes poetry about the flavors of charred human, elf, and dwarf. Gave my word, on my honor though. Put in minimal effort in most battles as long as noble is safe and friendly fire can be minimized. Pissed off a Druid Circle though. Pally had to get super diplomatic. I was ready to torch their whole damned forest. Noble still thinks I'm scary as Hell, but has new respect for me kicking efforts in battle into overdrive when that fucking Shambling Mound turned its attention on our non-combatant soft target. I burned through spells like mad, and briefly went to melee until the proper melee fighters finished it off. Beginning of my slide toward good, honor oath or not, Tiamat's favor begins waning. By campaign's end, Tiamat has rejected me, am now a Chaotic Good pyromaniac that still enjoys the taste of charred elf. Pally makes me realize, as long as I keep the noble alive, I have to keep protecting him. Oh, and since assassination plot is thwarted, find out noble is actually a prince... Well, technically now a king, with a Red Dragonborn sorcerer bodyguard. Campaign closed, DM likes to tell party some vague details of where our choices lead our lives, post-campaign. For the foreseeable future I am a King's Court Mage. Efforts are ongoing to make me prefer Pork and Beef, rather than Human and Elf. I admit defeat for insisting on wanting to play an evil character. Still have character sheet, presently considered a retired character. Thinking goody-good humans rub off on him, tries to pretend to hate it though.
