This week I am covering a viewer requested topic and explaining how I feed my spiderlings and scorplings. For those that don't know, those are small or baby tarantulas and scorpions. I break down what I use as feeders, how often I feed and how I feed my slings and scorpions. Thanks for taking the time to watch. Be sure to like the video if you found it helpful and leave a comment with any other spiderling feeding tips you may have or questions I didn't answer.

This is exactly what a former friend of mine had done when she took the challenge of raising a 1/4" T. albopilosus. She had to cut up mealworms in pieces at first. When it grew to around 1.25", it began to take small live crickets. That was in 2010-11. Eventually, she grew bored of it and dropped it off at the LPS. I just happened to go there for crix for my own and recognized the animal. The LPS let me have her for free since they knew I was caring for a small collection. Now, this beautiful female is over 5" I think and the official "garbage disposal" of my group. Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)

I know its a little silly but thanks for advocating for the human treatment of the feeder insects. I actually view my feeder colonies as pets and like the little guys, so other than the unlucky ones that must pay the price (Den of the Shining Wire anyone?) they get spoiled.

this literally came at the right exact time for me!😁😁 my mom is gonna get me a new tarantula for my late Christmas present and I was planning on getting a sling to help keep it on the cheaper side, but also because I find the aspect of raising a tarantula from an itty bitty baby to an adult so fascinating and rewarding. Still trying to figure out what species I want (thinking about a GBB) but I've still been so nervous about having the care requirements down perfectly. This video has really helped reassure me a lot and now I can know more of what to expect. Thank you!!!

I was super nervous getting slings the first time. I already had a ton of red runners that were too small for my older T's. After unboxing them and putting them in there little enclosures I decided to feed them. I dropped a little red runner in the T.Vagans home first, the little guy took it down as soon as it hit the dirt. They all ended up eating like that right off the bat. I luckily didn't have the anxiety that comes with food. The slings I got eat in front of me more then my bigger T's thus far. Its actually not a good thing because now I want more lol Thanks Richard its videos like this that gave me the confidence to jump in.

Awesome video, thanks! The tip about refrigerating the flightless fruit flies is brilliant, definitely going to help me out in future! Personally, I’ve found large cricket legs to be a good food source for slings around the half inch mark. I also like to feed pre-killed prey to any sling that I think is in premolt, or has just molted, just to be on the safe side.

Great video! It's always nice when people go into specific detail and show how they do things. My tip for flightless fruit flies is get a flip-top spice container. I'll put the whole fruit fly container in the fridge, use a funnel to tap them into the spice jar, and put on the lid. Then you can do a tap down, then quickly flip it open and closed to sprinkle some out. When my jumping spiders were slings I had a lot of them to feed, and that worked well. You still get a few escapees, but it's not too bad. If you're really worried about it, get a wide low tupperware to do things in, and grease the edges. Then the escapees are trapped in that area. I breed Superworms (for my reptile) so I just fish out the tiniest ones and I think they work as well as mealworms- if you have a number of creatures that eat them I really recommend breeding. If I'm feeding something larger I do a partial head crush because they can bite. They're so easy to raise. I tend to have more variety on hand because some jumping spiders won't really touch worms and prefer flies, so I have bluebottle flies and black soldier flies. I've found my GBB T will eat those too (they seem to eat about anything). If people have trouble finding small enough crickets, you can semi breed them. I find them too much of a PITA to full on breed, but if you get a couple adult females and give them a tiny tub of damp soil to lay in, then you'll have baby crickets in a couple weeks (if they're adult they've already mated, you don't need noisy males). If you run out or they die off, just repeat. Just give em a bit of veggies, dry bran/oat/meal food, and water. My first T is a C. cyanopubescens that I raised from a somewhat small sling. They're still doing great, I love them! Their body (excluding legs) is about an inch and a half now, and they're starting to develop some of their adult colors. It's been so fun watching them grow! My second T, an A. avicularia sling, didn't make it and I was really sad. They did well for like a month and even molted, but shortly after I found them curled at the bottom :( I may have needed more ventilation, I had some but maybe it wasn't enough. I had them in a cup with holes poked, and a nylon over the top (and sticks, moist soil, etc). I was always kinda worried about them eating since they webbed up near the top and mostly stayed there, but it seemed like they ate. I had them on hydei fruit flies and pinhead crickets. I just really liked the little guy, they had a lot of personality, and I even had a video of them doing a "happy dance".

Hey Richard I have an idea that might also help when you feed those fruit flies. Try putting a ladies nylon stocking over the jar or small enclosure. Then they shouldn't be able to get out of the holes. Giving your tarantula and scorpions more time to get them and leas chance of them running around your house good luck and great video.

I've been trying to leave them alone bc they still had a molt in their enclosure but I got excited and decided to put a cricket in there for them but they didn't eat it so then I got scared thinking my spiderling was still soft so I killed the cricket and left it in there for them. I do wax worms for my bigger slings, and the smaller ones i cut up mealworms. If the wax worms live long enough they become moths and i noticed some species really enjoy the moths, my catalina sling seems to purposely let the wax worms burrow and become moths before he/she eats, really interesting.

Great tip with the fruit flies because my Pterinopelma sazimai onyx laid her eggsac and we pulled it on day thirty. There were so many EWLs that I started thinking about what I was going to feed them. This video helped as this is my first eggsac and I haven't had many slings this small. I sent you pictures of the eggsac. Take care Richard. Ibnsarachnids aka rob

I remember when I got my curly hair as a freebie when I ordered my Haitian brown birdeater,Audrey. She was the size of my pinky nail and it scared me as I never raised a spider that small before,I have a compost pit in my yard that attracts all kinds of small flies,so I caught some of those and used them for her,now she's almost three inches a year later and due to molt soon!
