I'm a teacher with 20+ years experience and have been tying flies for 40 years....and this is one of the best lessons I've ever had. Thanks chief. I'm going to modify slightly to imitate alewife in Lake Champlain, fishing weedy offshore reefs for smallmouth. Hats off Gunnar.
@jacobbeers11362 жыл бұрын
That was my first thought as well - that’ll make a perfect alewife with a simple swap of colors.

This was a great beginners kit for a great price. kzbin.infoUgkxKRURvLsu9Vvyw7gIuvt8FsApoQNCdz-1 Its given us a huge variety to test out and see what works well and what we like to use. Majority of the flies have stayed together well, but some of the rainbow warriors did unravel after catching a few blue gill. All in all, this was a great kit and are so happy with the purchase and value for money.

Awesome. After some 20 years of flytying I still get to learn something new. You certainly have a flair for video instruction. A thought is to have your fly off-centre of the video frame and bring the off-camera actions into play - the brushing and staggering of the craft fur

I here yah man, i just recently started doing the materails lists. This has a 1/0 Ahrex Texas Predator, EP Gamechanger Blend tail in White, Hedron Accent Flash in Opal, Craft Fur in Grey, White, and Ice Dub Shimmer Fringe in Peacock eye. 8mm Deer Creek eyes in Volcano.
@jaimef692 жыл бұрын
Great tutorial with lot of useful tips as always! One question pops in my mind: The fly is definitelly snag/weed-free... but does that material making it snag/weed-free interferes with hook-ups? Have you experience that? If so, any porcentage of lost fish? Other other fisherman & fly tiers mentions this issuet with similar flies. If this is a problem, do you think the Ahrex hook you helped design could be better for this patterns? I see the point of the hook is a bit higher that the base of the hook (more exposed) so it could increase hook ups. I will appreciate to hear your thoughts. Cheers!

So, what happens if you build the top of the body up by the hook eye, and the belly down on the vertical drop? I may experiment with that this winter, seeing if I can build a tall, flat profile that way. I could see making a "peanut bunker" pattern for striped bass/weakfish, and a perch/sunfish pattern for largemouths.

Awesome tying man, Coming from a new fly guy, I am looking to find places where I can get fly tying material without a fly shop around me, but I also don’t know what materials would be best to use for different aspects like this fly… anybody have some idea’s? I know the obvious ones, Walmart, craft stores… etc.
@ericthacker27548 ай бұрын
Can you use barbell eyes instead? Just attach them before you fold all the material back? Also can you tie this (non-weedless) on a normal baitfish style hook?

Have you tied this using a closed/straight section of bucktail for the tail? Or Faux? Nice quick tie once you get comfortable with the spacing. Very nice- excited to fish them.
@alkinceratfafterthefly62845 жыл бұрын
Okay Gunnar. Does this fly swim true with the hook bend down or does the weight of the fur and glue cause it to flip upside down. It just seems like it will turn bend side on top. I’m about to tie one on but I wanted to see if you’ve fished it and how it acts in the water. Thanks and you do a great job and tie the kind of flies I like to tie.

toby baconator yes I have purchased BPS hook weights which can be pinched onto the shank. I have also included a blade and turned the streamer into a boogie bait for casting gear. This combo works great in bass, pike and musky.

This is the best aqua-dynamic (as in aerodynamic) seminar I have seen in fly tying for streamers! I wonder how weedless this can be and have you tried adding 20-30lb mono as core to increase the stiffness?
@matthewjeffres12896 жыл бұрын
Great looking fly! What weight rod do you fish this on? Thanks
@Gunnar_Brammer6 жыл бұрын
I like it best on a 6 wt. with a sinking style line - but if you go up a hook size to the 3/0 it fishes well on a floating line as the wire weight will help jig the fly effectively.
