Range Report: Mateba 6 Unica Grifone Carbine in .357 Magnum (a unicorn variant of a unicorn firearm)

In this Range Report I get a very special opportunity to get to shoot and review a very rare and collectible firearm that most people do not even know exists. This gun is the Mateba 6 Unica Grifone Carbine chambered in .357 Magnum. This is a carbine version of a Mateba autorevolver. This action blend a semi-automatic pistol with a revolver and is quite unique and one of a kind. This video documents my personal thoughts, opinions and experiences with this firearm. Yours may vary.

My Dad had a great pistol collection. He had both a . 357 and a . 44mag Mateba. He sure didn't have a carbine kit though. This is the first I've ever seen. CrAzY

@@thetexasgunvault They're incredibly well made, like most Italian firearms, and the .44 mag. is by far one of the softest shooting and most accurate guns I've ever fired chambered in that caliber

A damn shame they discontinued this revolver. I love the look of them and was hooing to see some more produced since i see some chiappa rhinos being made.

The way the hammer looks wonky when it misfires, suggests some part of the hammer mechanism may be worn or damaged. Could be the spring getting caught or hung up after repeated recoil events, likely due to the automatic cocking mechanism. Yeah, I think that would be the place to start. Loading with snap caps and dry firing all 6 cylinders would be the first point of elimination. My opinion is that the hammer spring is not engaging correctly after repeated recoil events. I was a Small Arms Repairer and Armourer in the army for over 20 years, and I have my Gunsmithing certificate in California (can't wait to get out of here).

Looks like one of those .410 shotgun revolvers which are sort of long barrelled Judge type things with a stock.

The issue is weird for its consistency on the last round. However, try to see if the slide has fully returned into battery after the 5th shot. In my experience, my .454 model, shooting 45 LC with softer spring, at times was not fully returning into battery. Sometimes I needed to cycle it manually by pushing the muzzle on the bench. If the slide is only slightly out of battery it may cause a such an issue. The fact that it's on the 6th round puzzles me. If pushing the slide works, try shooting a stronger load, the Grifone gas a lot more recoiling mass than the pistol.

Maybe some rounds are seating a bit deeper in the cylinder than others. Maybe compare rim thickness on the fired brass and malfunctioned ammo.

Pretty neat never knew they made a rifle version of these, odd that it will fire the 5 rounds just fine but not that one, is it the same hole in the cylinder? if so I wonder if that hole was maybe cut just a hair to deep while rare I have seen it a couple times.

Yeah, I was confused too. It is a different chamber in the cylinder each time.

Not the best view but it almost looked like the action was not going into battery completely on the 6th shot.... It would be interesting to know if somehow it was always the same cylinder that failed.
