The way I interpret I Bet on Losing Dogs is that Mitski herself IS the losing dog and she's saying that she feels a kind of kinship with the poor things. There's a parallel in the lyrics where she says she looks into the eyes of the dogs while they lose, then in a later voice, her lover is the one looking into her eyes as she loses just by being back with them even though it hurts her.

yesss, i also thought that the romantic interest was cheating on the person ("i know who you pretend i am" "why not me?" and it could also be something about him returning with dirty shoes like after having the afair), or that the person was in a relationship where they were really supportive and the partner kinda abused that disposition and that generosity. A kind of sexist relationship too, where she cleans and cooks for the guy and the guy returns after fucking somebody else and doesn't even want to kiss her.

I love mitski! She’s my favorite artist and I’m glad you reviewed her!!! As for how I interpret the songs I know a lot of women of color brought up how in strawberry blonde it could be about the struggles woc face trying to be noticed in a society that values white women over other women of color like how she mentions “strawberry blonde” as a hair color and “all I ever wanted was a life in your shape” which also relates to the theme of your best American girl which she wrote after strawberry blonde which is about self acceptance and accepting yourself and your culture and background in a world where other people look down upon it so in a way I see your best American girl as like the conclusion of strawberry blonde where the narrator accepts themself and loves themself even though the person they were interested in overlooked them, I have more thoughts so I will probably reply to myself lol

Also good on you for differentiating between the song's POV and her personal experience--I read an interview with her from a while back where she expressed annoyance that she's often conflated with the perspective she uses for her songs, and they're not always the same. Some of my personal favorites are First Love/Last Spring, Last Words of a Shooting Star, I Will, Lonesome Love, and Old Friend--apologies if any of them were in the last Mitski video, it's been a minute since I watched it. i would LOVE to see you look at songs from lush. mitski’s discography has such a huge range of genres, and i feel like lush is the most unique. some of the songs are criminally underrated (door and wife are two of my favorite mitski songs but no one seems to talk about them as much as bury me at makeout creek, puberty 2, and be the cowboy songs) and all have incredible emotion and lyrics (i mean it’s mitski cmon) and i would love to see your take on them. if you listen to it, note that she was very young when writing the songs, and it’s both beautiful and horrifying how she created such tragic songs at such a young age.

If you haven’t heard Poppy’s music yet, I think she’d make for a great TTS video. My recommendations (in chronological order to show her musical growth) are: - Lowlife - Interweb - Girls in Bikinis - Concrete - I Disagree Hope you’re doing well, Bill :) Have a good day!
