As a protestant learning about Catholicism, Confirmation made no sense to me up until recently when someone called it "baptism of the Holy Spirit," a term I am very familiar with. Not that the Holy Spirit isn't given at baptism, scripture makes that clear, but that it is fully outpoured in the "laying on of hands." It's very interesting seeing concepts I thought were very new in Christian history go all the way back to the earliest manifestations of the Church.

Hi Myles: it is described in Acts 8: 14-16. Philip was a Deacon, he baptized and exorcized. But, only Peter and John lay hands on the ones receivinh The Holy Spirit. Confirmation is to become a witness of the Gospel.

In my hometown of Berlin, Germany, Confirmations are currently done with some sort of cotton swabs as I've heard. ´ I'm not confirmed just yet but I think about waiting for a Priest or Bishop who would confer me this holy Sacrament in the traditional way (my parish priest actually agrees with me on this). What do you think, Fathers? Is there a guide-line or principle from the Church I can safely follow in this matter?

Lucas, I'm not sure which kind of evidence you have in mind (theological, historical, scientific, etc.) but currently on our youtube channel, we have a Quarantine Lecture (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXnEoqyEqb2mg80) and a short reflection from Holy Week (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYvZeWiKg9R_p7c) on the Resurrection. Baptism must be made by complete immersion, not ust the washing of the head. Christ Jesus gives us the example to follow when He Hinself is baptized by John by complete immersion. There is no other way of being baptized but through the whole body being completely immersed or else your baptism isn't complete. We are crucifying the sinful flesh just as Christ Jesus did on the cross, just as He also did when he got baptized. The complete sinful man must be completely buried (this is what happens instantly when we are baptized) and raised up in the likeness of Christ Jesus when we come out of the water; "And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water" (Matthew 3:16). And after we come out of the water, God Himself will recognize us as His Sons or Daughters as He did with Jesus Christ, "and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: and lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:16-17). The sinful man is buried into that water, the complete sinful flesh, not just the head, but the hands, the legs, feet, and torso. We must follow the example Christ Jesus gave us and He got baptized as an adult (at the age of 30), not as a child. God bless........

I understand the symbolic of full immersion, but I don't see how the New Testament would suggest, that it has to be by full immersion. Historically, we know that Christians from the 1st century didn't consider full immersion necessary, and pouring of water was also the way to baptise. The Christian document called Didache dated to c. A.D. 100, says this: "And concerning baptism, baptize this way: Having first said all these things, baptize into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, in living water. But if you have not living water, baptize into other water; and if you can not in cold, in warm. But if you have not either, pour out water thrice upon the head into the name of Father and Son and Holy Spirit." (Didache / Lord's Teaching Through the Twelve Apostles to the Nations).

@@simsujemy It is not symbolic, it is a True Rebirth. Baptism is the parting of the Red Sea all over again. It is a journey every Christian must make to escape and get to the promised land, such as the Israelites did crossing the Red Sea, except they did it literally; we as Christians do it Spiritually. It must be a full submersion such as John the Baptist was doing and such as Jesus Christ also was baptized in. Amen....Amen.

@@simsujemy Follow the example Jesus Christ the Son of Man did when He got BAPTIZED by FULL IMMERSION and then He became The Son of God, with God recognizing Him verbally as His Son for all to hear in Matthew 3:16-17 when He came up from the water. God Bless you........

Strange traditions of men. Jesus was fully immersed in water. You only do the head. There's no representation of death and burial, and then rising again to symbolize the resurrection. How can a baby decide to follow Jesus? Their baptism is in vain, because righteousness cannot be forced.

baptism is a gift. As such, there are no age requirements. It is a gift. The church besides pouring and sprinkling of water (forms of baptism even discussed in the early church -see the Didache) also recognizes immersion. Greetings

Full immersion may not always be available. Would you have people denied the sacrament of baptism simply because there was insufficient water present for full immersion?
@opeth51
@opeth51 3 жыл бұрын
@@tertia0011 Couldn't there be a day in the future where there is more water available? Why not wait until you can fully immerse before doing this sacred saving ordinance? It shouldn't be taken so lightly because it's serious enough for all of heaven to witness.

@@opeth51 The matter - water, being only a symbol of that which is effected i.e. the cleansing of sin & regeneration to new life in Christ, - the pouring or sprinkling of water is SUFFICIENT. And being symbolic it retains its value as a witness to Christ's sacrificial death & resurrection. Whether more or less so is a matter of opinion.
@opeth51
@opeth51 3 жыл бұрын
@@tertia0011 Let's get the Bibles opinion on it.... John 3:23 And John also was baptizing in Ænon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. Acts 8:36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: So...a real Christian would do as scripture says. There's no such verse that describes a sprinkling. That is a mockery of baptism, the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, and the entire Word of God. You can't take the name of Jesus upon yourself (Christian), while practicing a different gospel.
