link wears blue in the wilds era games because blue is the rarest colour in nature, therefore the art team though that blue would contrast nicely with the large, green open world! :)

@XanderVJ2 ай бұрын
Nop. The developers already said in interviews that they didn't go with blue for any other reason other than changing Link's outfit being part of the whole "rethinking Zelda conventions" mantra. They went with blue apparently completely at random, and blue contrasting with green was a rationalization that they came up with after the fact (which makes no sense whatsoever, by the way. Blue is still just a prevalent as green in the game due to the sky).

That wouldn't really make as much sense from a story perspective though. The wild set in breath of the wild is basically meant to be the monks' reward to link since he has proved to them (by completing all of their trials i.e shrines) to be the true hero of the land If he got the set randomly after beating the divine beasts it wouldn't make much sense imo

@@melizabeth555 Exactly. And it's a very bad speech, because the Tunic of the Wild's design straight up sucks. Seriously, it's by far the ugliest design of the traditional clothes in the entire series. So much so I'm convinced it was designed like that on purpose to not upstage the Champion's Tunic. Specially because the main art director of the series, Satoru Takizawa, has been on record saying that he never liked Link's original design, specially the cap, so it's pretty clear to me that he wants to get rid of it. Hence why we didn't get a new tunic in TotK too.

There was a hero before the skyword sword link who wore a similar outfit. I' m not 100% sure if the manga in hyrule historia is canon, but i believe at least his existence is. imagine a Zelda game where you not only have to acquire your master sword to gain power, but also your tunic has a big significance with this too. @TheZeldaEnthusiast2 ай бұрын
I was thinking the SAME thing while working on this video. Totally different shades of green. Im no expert, but maybe I should have mentioned that while talking about how the nes was able to handle a red and blue tunic
@ShyGuyXXL2 ай бұрын
@TheZeldaEnthusiast I mean, it's true that the NES has a limited number of color palettes, but the palettes for the background and the palettes for the objects (characters and enemies) usually occupy two separate sets of slots. So if you want something to have the same palette as the background, you need to have 2 instances of the same palette in each set of slots. There's no real reason to do that, other than some very niche scenarios where you might need to cheat to make the game look more graphically complex than it is. Like using an object to make it look like a background has more detail than it could actually have. But most games use them for more important things.
@RobinRhombus22 ай бұрын
@@TheZeldaEnthusiast As someone who has done research into the Famicom's limitations as a console, here's my insight: The Famicom could support eight colour palettes and one background colour. Four of these palettes were for background sprites (i.e. stuff that can't move) and four for the moving gameplay elements. Link's palette (brown, tan, and green) is shared with the bow, arrows, Pols voice, and a few other things. There's the red and blue palettes that are always active and are used for a buncha different things. The third palette is changed depending on the room and covers everything from the Zola to Ganon. You can tell that what shares Link's palette because when he gets a ring all of the items and enemies that share his palette also swap out the green for red or blue. The reason this happens is because only one palette can be used or sprite. Each one has a max of three colours (technically four but transparency is its own colour that's always present). To use more than three you'd have to layer sprites on top of each other. That's how things like the old man and Zelda have black eyes. They're actually transparent but are showing the background colour underneath, which is black.

Best thing about the Wilds tunic set is that it's the only one of the tunic sets that can be dyed in Hateno. I usually dye the hat with another set's top, such as the Hylian set. I do this because I don't like that the arms and legs of the outfit, despite the description saying it fit's perfectly, are clearly too short for BotW Link's limbs. The shorts are fine on their own, but combined with the weird mid-length of the sleeves, it just looks like it was made a few sizes too small. My favorite visually was pairing the hat from the Wild set with the Warm Doublet and Hylian trousers you get on the plateau. Hilariously, this also means your reward for all shrines becomes... Just a hat.

Between the "at the end of all timelines" and a re-established Hyrule, the Blue tunic makes sense It also explains why the 10,000 year ago the Sheikah made a green set for him? Because the Hero then wore green. But, unfortunately that was Also when the Royal family started taking over everything and making the Sheikah remove their tech and splitting them. I have a feeling the "our champions, including the hero must be blue" probably started then. One has to wonder if the hero 10,000 years ago got ran off too ;_;. Not only that, but you have to do 50% of the “dungeons” before having access to the complete 120 shrines. And prior to Champion’s Ballad, that left you only 2 Divine Beasts before storming the castle properly to face Calamity Ganon. I really wish the Champion’s Tunic was compatible with the Dye Shop so I could dye it green.😭 If they were Hellbent on the champion blue motif, _Hyrule Warriors_ pretty much already solved that with the blue scarf/sash Link wears with his green outfit. _Age of Calamity_ even lets you unlock that one though you pretty much have to finish the whole game before you can access it. Would love to see the cutscenes with him wearing _that_ outfit while Zelda still had her old outfit on since you can’t switch her back once she goes goddess mode aside from swapping her to her winter garb.😒

While sort of the same evolution, Beetlejuice went through a similar outfit association. However, unlike Link Beetlejuice hardly ever wore his well own outfit thought the original film, and instead wore a number of different outfits, and just like Link became attached to what was considered the default clothing. What you might have missed was how both of these characters got their own cartoon series, and the main character being easily identified by the associated outfit. This was such to a point that the sand worm monsters had to be redesigned for the cartoon else it would clash with Beeltejuice's own stylization. While both of these characters have changed outfits a lot, they both became known for a single outfit.

What I wanted out of Breath of the Wild, was to be able to play as freaking Old man Link, because the dude had been recovering for a freaking 100 years, yet he didn't age 1 bit and I'm sick and tired of the kid Links, I want to see a badass white hair and even bearded Link kicking ass in Hyrule, but unfortunately the closest thing of being able to play as someone like that is Geralt from the Witcher games, and like what if they had made that as a reward for completing shrines and stuff, that they had made Old man Link start to regain the youth that had been taken away from him, which would have even worked as a game mechanic as to why Link had low stamina and health, and it was because the guy was a freaking old man and then by the time you do all the shrines and stuff, he is at his peak and aged to his 20s and then he even gets recognized as the Hero of Legend, versus the discrimination he would have faced being a weak old man. And like with this idea they could have even created multiple endings, because it would be funny if the speed running Links would manage to save Zelda as an old man and then she would be surprised about that, while the canonical ending would be that Link would save Zelda after reaching his prime.

Personally, I love the idea of Link’s outfit being reworked pretty radically. However, I have a soft spot for him wearing green, since green usually symbolizes Courage or the Hero’s Spirit throughout the series. In my opinion, that makes the Archaic Tunic the best of both worlds: a unique design that retains a connection to Link himself, rather than just to the Royal Family. To hell with the stats, I wore that Tunic for Ganondorf himself and it just looks so good, especially with how it parallels Ganondorf’s outfit.

As you said, by that point there's nothing left to do really. TotK did it better since you can get the wild set way earlier if you know where they are, but it still kinda sucks because you probably won't find them for a long time on a blind playthrough (for me it was like 150 hours until I finally came across the trousers and inferred the location of the other two pieces).

7:54 "but Link doesn't always wear green by choice." you missed an oppertunity to talk about a major theme of Wind Waker, which is earning your place. Yes, at first Link is embarassed and uncomfortable that he has to wear the Hero's Clothes, and Grandma reassures him that it's only for today. But throughout the game, Link doesn't take it off, so why? It's because he realizes just how important his family is to him. It's a very human story about growing up thinking traditions and love are hokey nonsense, and then being completely humbled and finally taking it as your own responsibility.
@coletaleАй бұрын
8:50 you also missed that Faron is cognate with Farore. it's a huge huge huge part of Aonuma's directed Zelda games that these made up names and words allude to one another, such is the case with Fado in Wind Waker. It's obviously playing into the phonetics of "Forest", so she's a spirit of nature. [Which to be fair, you bring up @ 4:03 but it's not completely direct still] These things aren't just named after the particular god in the lore, they are constantly being reincarnated with new beings in history which carry on their spirit. The same things happening to Zelda & Link of course, but their names don't change for poetic reasons.
@coletaleАй бұрын
10:03 BotW is a departure directly because Aonuma had far less creative control. You can read Iwata Asks and in every single interview, he's backtalking Miyamoto for giving him a strict deadline on Majora and a whole host of things. He had to make up a tech demo for Wind Waker that was purely a lie so that Miaymoto wouldn't see the bold artstyle and instantly hate it. It's true Fujibayashi is credited as director, but I don't think I need to tell you Skyward Sword is much more in line with TP than it is BotW, and it's not a clean transition point either. And yeah, like you said, you don't get the tunic itself until after getting 100%, but what's worse actually is that instead of being a fairy boy, island kid, or a ranch hand; BotW Link is a predestined super soldier whose been cryogenically frozen as a last resort weapon. I mean, the tone couldn't be more stark. Thank you for calling it "blasphemous", woo!
