One thing worth mentioning is the CX-30’s crash rating. Mazda holds a patent (with Sumitomo Metal industries) for the strongest ultra high tensile steel in the automotive industry. They first used the Samurai sword inspired steel sparingly in the first CX-5 but in their later models they have used a lot. The fact no other car company can use the same steel is showing. The CX-5 was the only car to pass in the IHSS recent revised side impact. Meanwhile the CX-30 is the first and only vehicle on sale in Europe since EuroNCAP’s 2009 testing revision to receive a 99% for frontal occupant safety putting it slightly ahead of the Mazda 3, which in turn is just in front of the Tesla Model X. This means the CX-30 beats out everything every other car manufacturer makes.

Fellow ‘21 Mazda owner here! Mine’s a 3 hatch with a 6-speed! Been super happy with it and your videos were part of my choice! Manual is no Civic Si manual but still feels pretty good and it’s been easy to learn as a new stick driver. Revs drop really naturally with the NA 2.5, and much prefer its power delivery to a 1.5/1.6T. The parking brake thing is actually kinda handy with the stick, tho. Drove mine from San Francisco to Seattle and it was a great highway cruiser. Super quiet, nice safety tech suite (manual still gets radar cruise!) and I averaged 37 mpg. Totally with you on the infotainment/cabin simplicity. Just a few months and I’m already super used to it, tho my center console and airbag cover also have a few scratches.

@@garrettw99 THANK YOU! I hear so many reviewers bitch and whine and complain about “the AnCiEnT, dAtEd, oLd 6 SpEeD aUtO” when Mazda still programs it beautifully and it returns competitive (if slightly lower) performance and fuel economy. Also means it doesn’t gear hunt all the time like a 9 or 10 speed. Could an 8-speed deliver better 0-60 and mpg’s? Sure. But the Mazda 6-speed auto is still perfectly fine for getting the job done.

Hey Topher. To answer your question about the automatic parking brake, you have to turn the ignition on, hit the Auto Hold button, and then push down the Parking Brake switch for at least two seconds (or longer) until a sound is activated. I just bought a CX-5 Turbo a few months ago as a future family car, and the cramped interior specs were exactly what sent me away from the 3 and CX-30. Enthusiasts can whinge about cars getting big, but rear-facing seats really require space back there. There are some exceptions like the Civic and Elantra that seem to do it right, but it can eat into the trunk space and (at least in my situation) when you're packing for trips, more people, or also carting dogs around, it's just not realistic. I'm still mad there's no 6 wagon, but your shot of the rear seat going past your seats in the middle is the kind of thing that makes me glad I sized up. You helped steer me in the direction of Mazda, so thank you for the content!

The CX-5 Turbo might be a little too tiny for american families. From what i gather, you should buy an enormous tank for your trips to the mall, when you have a single baby. The CX-30 is barely bigger than a motorcycle in terms of space, i get it....

This is the same weird "issue" on my 2016 lexus as well as my brand new 21' honda... my wife will drive it on memory setting 1 , i use memory setting 2. whenever I drive either car and press #2 and it adjusts, the moment I shut the car down and start it up again, it will revert to memory setting #1 and I then have to wait for the entire start up ordeal to finish before going to my #2 setting. I drove a Kona and a turbo cx30 and a non turbo cx30, I will be picking up my preferred package CX30 in Oct, OK the Kona took it out for a test drive and immediately returned it to the dealer, for some reason it just didn't feel right, maybe because I drive like this guy and it was the turbo model, it had the 1.6 Ltr motor and I don't think it would last too long with that turbo on it. BTW the milage on the turbo CX30 is only about 1mph less than the non turbo, problem is it's such a blast to drive you won't be able to stop punching it so you won't get the stated milage. OK peace out

Regarding the memory seat, memory on your car seat (i.e. slot 1 and 2) are independent from memory to your keyfob, which means for each keyfob you have you will get an extra memory slot. Typically, (say your the main driver) you would want to match your slot 1 on your car to your keyfob so that when you unlock your car your seat will automatiaclly adjusted to your seating position (hence eliminate the issue you have when you unlock the car and it keeps adjusting to previous memory setting). To do that you just have to position yourself to your seating position and press hold [SET] and then [1] until your hear *beep*, then you would wanna press [SET] and press hold unlock button on your keyfob until you hear *beep* once again and now your seating position 1 and your remote position should sync up (note that every time you wanna make changes to seating memory you would have to repeat these step)

Great work on the video! Your initial CX-30 Turbo review helped me decide on which car to buy when I was moving. I now have a CX-30 Turbo of my own in Canada. Would take it over a new X2 or Mercedes GLA (Still hideous btw) anyday. Only real complaint I have is that I can't pop the trunk unless in park with the parking brake on and all doors unlocked. Other minor nitpicks are that the rear end tends to clatter over rough pavement a little too much for my liking and that the Canadian model doesn't get a 360 degree camera or front parking sensors (I think they're available on US CX-30 Turbo premium and premium plus trims, should double check this though). I have never been comfortable in my car neither have my passengers it just doesn’t get cold enough like a CX5 Mazda3 Or any other type of Japanese car. After taking the car to the dealer about 7-8 times they replaced the main onboard computer thinking that would solve the issue however ever since they did that sometimes when I have the air conditioning on it will start blowing anything out of the vents and now sometimes when I turn the heater on it also stopped blowing anything out of the vents, so I am curious if you have ever experienced my issues?

And while they're at it, we need a eco mode or a snow mode with deadened throttle response. Ever try to drive a car with an ultra touchy gas pedal in snowy and icy roads? It's stressful, I'll tell you that.

I would double check if using latch system in the middle seat is ok. Most of the time you aren’t suppose to “borrow” the latches from either side like that due to geometry issues. Only a handful of cars have 3 sets of latches in the back seat.

Yes, PLEASE bring back some affordable, reliable sport wagons. So tired of the overpopulation of SUVs. The wagons have the same, if not more, amount of room for all your gear as SUVs but way more fun to drive. Cheers

If I didn't have a family, I would have bought the Mazda 3 instead. The CX30 is a good compromise between practicality and fun, especially with a manual gear box (which is available in Europe). The micro-hybridation we get also get rid of the lack of power at lower revs.

Agree completely with your comment about the auto trans 12:15 Savagegeese and the car nut guy (both have mechanic components in their reviews) have often said it’s best auto on mainstream vehicle. But Mazda really went to town on it ensuring it was quick, direct in feel and economical avoiding CVT at all costs. It has a lock up clutch to ensure it can change gears quickly removing the notion of a slush box from what would otherwise be a slow fluid coupling in a torque converter Mazda make easily the best mainstream manual too putting the MX-5 short shifter style into MX-30 mainly in the UK though Re cross trek…. CVT means you need to be both patient in how unresponsive it is and deaf because it can squeal (particularly when towing). Ironically when a CVT is working as it really should, it should be making you hit quite high rpm Both Subaru and Mazda are small but they have very different takes on what they do. Mazda is more refined and a drivers car. They’re also best in an accident

Been looking at this vehicle too. Rear leg room isn't that big an issue for me. But the meh fuel economy combined with the small fuel tank (which now AWD is standard for 2022 so the small size is really your only choice) is making me 2nd guess. Might just get a Civic HB instead.

These cars aren't hatchbacks anymore, they are liftbacks. They actually blatantly admitted it with the new Acura Integra liftback which has the exact same body as the Civic 'hatchback' I have no idea why they still call them hatchbacks. In the Mazda forum a 2nd gen owner said his dogs would happily ride in the back of his hatch and he got a new 4th Gen 'hatch' and his dogs can't stand up anymore in the back.

Windshields seem to be made super cheaply these days. All my old cars from the early 2000s still have their first windshields with minimal chipping. And then all my cars from 2015 and newer have almost all had their windshields replaced. I have 2 3rd gen Mazda 3s and they both gets chips and cracks easily. It seems Toyota also has cheap windshields.

I've had a 2019 mazda 3 for 2 years now. What really annoys me is the front radar. I've had it in the shop as well but it hasn't fixed the issue. I had to drive around 700km's without cruise control it due to it being covered in the snowy conditions, or what I also found is that it doesn't like direct strong sunlight. I have no clue why they don't just allow you to use normal crusie control and not radar assisted if the front radar is covered. Auto transmission is a bit dodgy at times, but for the price of the car and the amount of standard equipment you get it was a steal. One minor thing as well is that the heated steering wheel does not heat the whole steering wheel and not so much in my opinion, I drove a new citroen C4 and the whole steering wheel heated up and really fast and well. Also whoever decided for the piano black by the shifter is really a piece of work. I also don't like how the CX30 doesn't have a flat loading boot, made me go for the normal mazda 3 instead even though I have a dog.

I am really close to buying one of these. I hate large cars, but I have 2 kids. One is almost out of a booster altogether and the other is in a high back booster. I am a single dad, so no one will usually be in the front passenger seat. Given those variables, would the tighter space in the rear be more or less of a liability for me at this point? No massive car seats, but double the number of kids you have. I don't want a CX-5. It puts me out of my budget (unless I want to sacrifice some bells and whistles), plus I think it looks like an overweight teddy bear - it has none of the sporty appeal of the CX-30. Thanks, and I love your vids!

This is basically just a slightly raised Mazda3. Everything else is basically the same, including dimensions and most features. But imo the Mazda3 looks better and I prefer the ride height of the Mazda3 as well. And of course the Mazda3 has optional manual and slightly cheaper. 13:32 seems like he picked slightly higher ride height over the manual since he could have bought the Mazda3 manual if that's what he wants.

Wouldn't it be better to wait a little bit and replace CX-30 with CX-70? European version of it (CX-60) as a plug-in hybrid should be available around middle of 2022, so it should be possible to buy CX-70 around the same time.
