I've watched like 15 videos of the ATR indicator, this was the one that actually made me understand how it works. Thanks. I'm interested in becoming a day trader, and one thing that always gets me is how the hell I'm going to be able to trade any stock in the 1 minute and 5 minute chart when such rapid movements take place. I have to pay attention to the indicators, candle patterns, set my stop loss and profit target...all in a matter of minutes or I might miss the move. I'm guessing It'll come with practice, right?

I had the same doubt and I just realized this only works for bullish trades. only if a break below candle is between 1 and 2 ATR, it signifies a false breakout and you can go long. But the same isn't true for a break above candle. If the break above candle is between 1 and 2 ATR, it shows momentum to the upside and you still go long.

After doing a bit of research a PIP is used pretty much exclusively for currency exchanges. For regular stocks you don't consider ATR in terms of "pips" it is just a dollar amount of how much the stock is trading per day.

I prefer SMA of last 14 candle size, so I see ATR period to 1 and add an SMA to the ATR, and then add other longer SMA(70) of the ATR. I use whichever the lowest between short and longer SMA.

Correction, the ATR is the average of the true range (its a more complex calculation of the pips in between the high and low while taking into account closing price, wiki explains it pretty well) of the last X amount of candles
