"Rap" is not really a new thing. "Rap" literally just means a talk or a speech, but long before hip hop it often referred to a rhymed and/or rhythmic speech. You can see Muhammed Ali pulling that stuff off in interviews and press conferences, and it was a big thing in "blaxploitation" movies of the 70's. What happened in the Bronx in the mid- to late 70's was that during dance parties - at which a DJ would play old funk records, preferably with a good ear for the best breaks and loop them - an MC (Master of Concert) would introduce the DJ, often in the form of a rap, *just like Sammy Davis Jr. is doing here.* In other words, a rhymed rhythmic presentation - a *rap* - was already a long established form of expression when hip hop got started.

My grandma said that everyone back then knew he was in love with tina and would do anything for her so he was definitely a threat to Ike because tina liked people like sammy

This performance sent child down my spine !! Maybe because I'm feeling that way now, but that song struck a serious chord. Her voice is indescribable

Her style was out of sight. Those clothes were on everything. I think she song those songs so strong because it was where she was in life. Ike and her was writing the songs

Tina's raw powerful raspy voice reminds me of the sheer power of Wilson Pickett's (Ninety-Nine and a Half).. Man she was something special along with the Ikettes.. got to give Ike his props too, the man could write music!

When you listen to the song lyrics and then take into consideration what Tina shared with us of their relationship and then listen to her singing. Wow. But at the end of the day, we all know how her story ended . . . and thank God for that.

It's a shame, but nowadays NO singer and NO dancers/background vocalists can do what these greats were doing. The intensity and originality is overwhelming and intoxicating at the same time. FAB!

The Ikette on the left I believe is Claudia Lennear. It's been said she is Brown Sugar from the Rolling Stones Song. She sang on the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour, then went on to sing with Leon Russell, Rolling Stones, David Bowie. She was in the documentary 20 feet from stardom.

Powerful!!!! Original raw talent at it's best!!! This made me cry and gave me chills just feeling the intensity of the performance & this was 1968!! She was really ahead of her time and so was the Ikettes!! I felt this and I wasn't even born yet until 1981

For Tina to go out on stage, and perform, while going thru all that abuse. God bless her, she's incredible. 💟
