Hi Jesse. Of all your interviews, this was the most helpful and affirming. I'm 68 and had a hip replacement 3 months ago. My PT was walking. After my 2nd week from surgery I started walking 30 minutes. My 4th week I went up to an hour which was 3.5 miles. This past month 4 miles. While listening to your podcast while walking yesterday, I walked 5 miles. Everything this man spoke for me made sense. I'm in the sun everyday. I eat 2x a day, usually no snacking. I'm very pleased with my physical shape and internal blood tests are great. I focus mostly on meat, some veggies, little berries and don't go crazy with water. I actually salt my water with added lemon and I do take supplements. I spend time with God every morning and am always growing I feel, not staying stagnic yet being mindful of guarding against excess stress in my life. Those boundaries are important. So when the stresses come you can stand. I've learned through the years the body is harmed through abusive use. The phrase no pain, no gain really wrecked our bodies in the 80s. Be kind. Oh, I do weights 2x a week and take a swim class 1x weekly. Love a good sauna as well. I really love your podcasts. Bless you and your family!

I'm still going through Mark's health coach program. Mark is legit and doesn't rely on hyperbole or other dramatic laden arguments to make points. He's is measured and walks the walk. If we could all be as healthy as him we'd be happier as a population, let alone at his age!

I love this guy. All of the influencers are telling people to get these gigantic grams of protein per day and everyone is all stressed out downing protein drinks all day to hit their quota. Love his take on this. Everyone needs are different yes, but glad to hear a practical standpoint

300g Steak and 4 Eggs are already 111g of complete Protein. This should fit most peoples needs. If you want to bulk, it is a bit different. I however have to opposite problem. I get more protein than I need, but lack fat. Despite the Bulletproof Coffee. 😱😂

Great interview! I was one of those recreational runners in the 70's and early 80's. Not too much resulting damage, and it was a good tool to quit smoking -hard to do both. If only we knew then what we know now. Great info!

i actually really love the act of running.. especially trails.. it gives me a feeling of freedom.. sometimes i catch myself smiling even.. after a long long run i can feel high for days sometimes..

So much great information, especially about how long-distance running may not be very good for you for all the reason Mark cites. I started to run half-marathons (and 1 marathon) in my 50s, and after 10 years, discovered (through a cIMT scan) that I had developed plaque in my arteries due to the repetitive excessive oxidative stress. Luckily only mild plaque - no soft plaque, but I stopped running long distance and now I work out 4 x a week at MADABOLIC and walk every day. I have been thinking about adding sprinting once a week to my routine, and after listening to Mark, I think I will start this week. One additional point, my latest cIMT scan revealed that I have no inflammation of the IMT layer in my carotid, only old, calcified plaque from my running days. In fact my arteries are now 14 years younger than my chronological age. So please be careful with long distance running!

⁠I used the 3 day a week training: sprints, 10K pace and then long slow runs My heart rate would stay elevated after the half-marathons

@@DrJK-wm9ec My heart rate stayed elevated too. .. before I became vegan and started walking fast pace every day, 15.000 steps. A year later I ran the half marathon at the same speed and a much lower heart rate.

Another excellent interview....I distance ran back in the early 90's, suffered niggling injuries and as a forefoot striker I gave up after 3 years, took up cycling instead. I tried running last year and after a 1/2 mile gave up, it was just horrible. I can bike 100km (62 miles with 2--3000ft ascent) in 3:45 at age 56 so distinctly average fitness but reserve my HIIT sessions for on Zwift where they can be done safely once or maybe twice a week, but I stay in Zone 2 for riding outside(unless I hit a steep hill!). I'm back out walking too these last couple of months, since taking early retirement I have the time to do it and have bought some cheap ultralight kit for camping. I'm out doing walks of 6-7 miles every other day in the hills around the house and love it. I used to end up dreading HAVING to go for a run back in the day!!

That whole thing about barefoot running reminds me of something I heard from a scientist who mentioned that if you don’t spend much time in direct contact (flesh to earth), your red blood cells (not just hemoglobin) can cluster together because of the electrostatic charge that builds up in your body. But with just 3 minutes of skin-to-earth contact, the charge balances out, causing the red blood cells to separate and flow more freely. If true, I wonder what other body functions might be affected by similar phenomena! Makes me even more curious because I discovered something wild at a laundromat called “Little Red Laundrette”-I took my sticky, staticky dryer socks and held them next to a potted plant. The socks were visibly drawn toward the plant, and after a few seconds, the static charge dissipated, and they just relaxed. I did my entire dried laundry that way, grinning like a maniac. 😂 Bless the random bystanders and their crazy eyes! 😄🌿

Thank God my body wasn't built to run! I never liked running. I could do low and slow endurance but I run like an elephant, not a gazelle 😁 I do love walking through.

Dietary fiber is not a human requirement and I wish more and more people would start waking up and better understanding this, it's not needed there is no essential daily fiber requirement, and I love how Mark explained everything so well like he always does, people need to stop worrying about the leafy greens and stuffing themselves full of plant based fiber which actually hurts the gut and they should instead focus on like Mark said the collagen protein and protein in general... I've been green free fiber free for many years now and have focused on protein (both muscle and collagen) as well as the healthy Omega fats...and I feel fantastic and I've been a long time listener and follower of Mark all the way back to his first book releases Primal Blueprint...great stuff 💯💯

@@sunnygirl9691 Collagen is found in meat by eating off the bone or from bone broth, you get the collagen by eating the meats off the bone, and or you can simply supplement with a Collagen protein powder, otherwise you'd have to boil bones from chicken or beef, it's separate from the muscle meats minus the bone.

​@bryceherring946 Sounds like not having plant fiber in your diet works for you. Congrats. Having plant fiber in my diet works for me. I was raised on a farm...freezers full of grass-fed beef and farm-fattened pork we raised. I have found over time I do better (better health biomarkers) without certain meats, more diverse, plant-based diet (some meat, protein powders to help meet protein needs). I think influencers like Sisson and Dr. Attia show people a willingness to adapt rather than get trapped in diet camps. Some people do benefit from removing certain foods either animal or plant-based. I'm not sold on collagen supplements, but was raised with bone-broths and good ole jello.

With the age of 67 I run, bycicle and ice swimming in winter min. 3-5 times every week and have fun. I agree with mark sisson that brown fat for fat burning is overrated. But ice swimming is very beneficia for mood and regeneration. I run 5 km after ice swimming and then feel great, warm and high. Also to fiber not everyone is adapted. Many people have gut stress from fiber. I use zero drop shoes with wide footbox for longer run and up to 12km barefoot shoes. Have no insuries.and run marathon. I have the impression that mark sisson in his age get wise. I have the experience that sometimes protein restriction ist beneficial to burn defected body protein. and afterwards eat again more protein to renew musce protein.

I don't think "cold plunge for burning calories" is common misunderstanding, I honestly never heard about it, but "cold shower" is a good stress, in my own case, it's not even a stress, it's how I take shower every morning, I never thought about it, and I love it! Running is a form of meditation and warm up exercises in addition to vigorous exercise I do (such as soccer) every week. I love cold shower, running and vigorous exercise

I wish more people would come out and collaborate with what Mark is saying about science settle. I always say that science base does not indicate an absolute. One just has to look at the food Pyramid which they say is based on science to understand that there's no absolutes in science. Whatever the health care is taught is what they will promote regardless of the merits in the discussion. Rarely you will see a doctor go against the grain of what they've been taught. Another good example is the pandemic, what a cluster that was, how many times have we heard the words (based on science) during the pandemic from health officials, or those in power representing health officials? I'm very content with myself in how I view the words science based.

I never bought into cold plunging as a woman since I have more nerve conditions and the regular cold aggravates them so I wouldn’t do a cold plunge but I get why others do them

I love cold plunging. I used to always be cold and i had very little tolerance for heat. Once I started cold plunging, I gave up my electric blanket and I also became better with heat too. I love it.

I do 3 minute fast paced run every day with a 20 lb weighted vest. Not really sprinting/walking, but definitely not long distance running. I just make sure I’m really out of breath at the end of it. Not sure if I should modify that. If nothing else, it helps wake me up in the morning.

Nordic walking is even more effective than walking. Multiple studies shows it burns about 20-30% more calories, works more muscles, and encourages better walking posture and form

I particularly appreciated Mark touching on the RDA/RDI's early on -- this is an area which I believe will benefit from a particular challenge to the current recommendations, in light of moving to a low carb, high animal fat and protein (carnivore etc) diet. Eating to satiety, getting 1.5-2g protein per kg of body weight and about the same of fat will not necessarily 'meet' the USDA (and worldwide iterations) guidelines for each micronutrient. That may not be an issue!

Mitochondria decoupling is the fat browning function and evidently burns an additional 350 calories per day so that's definitely tough to beat with just a couple minutes on the air bike although I'm a big believer in both

No plant wants you to eat it, that's not to say we haven't bred them for higher starch content, less bitterness etc. but it does sort of tell you there are only select specific windows in which fruit and maybe vegetables are viable food sources as in late summer. Fructose in large quantities causes oxidative stress and downstream of that fatty liver so as a long-term energy source is v. compromised. Sure, when strawberries are in season and the sun is out - which helps minimize oxidative damage - I will tuck into the occasional big bowl but you can't subsist on it.

@@helios4425 In fact once you start to ingest fructose the body will start producing its own via the polyol pathway. Take look at Nature Wants us to be Fat by Dr. Rick Johnson. Excess fructose causes oxidative stress leading to mitochondrial damage, hence why animals start to put on weight in late summer as their metabolism slows down, from triggering this survival switch in preparation for times of scarcity and/or hibernation. Many people now eat as if it's late summer the year round so this switch is always set to on.

IF the shoes ALLOWED grounding, the GOOD feeling of walking on grass, etc., I'd love to use them exclusively too!! Please consider the true health aspects. Edit: leather and linen allows the natural channels. No rubber, not plastics. Materials tests are available. Wool and linen together however, do cancel each other out. Man .. a nice linen and leather summer sneaker would be quite fantastic. I very much look forward to your discoveries and adaptations for our good Health. Thanks Mark. 💖

To me, the biggest advantages of cold plunging are psychological. We spend our lives programming ourselves to react in certain ways to various inputs. We aleays have the option whether or not to react to a stimulus and if we choose to reacr, how to react. Cold plunging can give you practice at not reacting physiologically and psychologically to the cold water.

Would it be worth approaching some of the plant-based nutrition advocates to consider being a guest on your brilliant channel? I notice Gil Carvalho (nutrition made simple) has caused quite a “stir” (!) by inviting “Carnivore Doc” Ken Berry for a good quizzing. Maybe you could invite the likes of Chris Gardner, Tim (ZOE) Spector or Chris (plant chompers) MacAskill. You’re already healthily open-minded about healthy nutrition...and that’s precisely what makes you a valuable watch and listen.

Most of my calories (85-90%) come from animal fat. My protein is 35-37g. I’m 70, 5’, I walk daily and weight train weekly. I used to sprint but I just returned to Florida and it’s HOT! So I have to figure it out in this very different environment

Main thing is to exercise at below 130 or 140 bpm and build the aerobic engine with minimal oxidative stress. Enjoy life, eat vegetables, fruits and meats in moderation. Look at how kenyan marathoners eat. It's very simple. Meats on hard work out days. Legumes and vegetables on other days.

Don’t know what mark is talking about out when he says people who run don’t lose weight. Thats crazy. When I first started running I lost a ton of weight. Having said that, I now think running is one of the worst ways to exercise for the damage to your joints and repetitive movement.

Did you get Marks meaning? Towards the last 1\4 of this video, he is relying on common sense. Just stay away from processed foods as much as possible, CARBS also to include fruit to some degree, sugars, eat protein from ~any source, do some exercise, and get sleep. This is what Mark is saying and *IF* you do understand this, you ~never need another video on how to be healthy. -- Yes there are a few details left out in my words but you can figure them out. Also, add red-light therapy, 660nm to 850nm wave length, to boost your mitochondria.

Vivo Barefoot is the best in my opinion. This brand Petuva is way too ridged, in the end it has no flexibility that the ankle needs for proper dorsiflextion and planarflextion. It couldn’t even bend in half when he attempted to bent it. People struggling with barefoot shoes because they’ve never adjusted to wearing them, the saying learn to walk before you run is accurate in this scenario. Of course just shoving your messed up biomechanics into those shoes and expect them to work is just pure fantasy, people need to correct their mechanics first. The results provided by Functional Patterns speaks for itself.

My takeaways from the video. Talks about eating meat twice a day, 12 oz steak per day and whey protein yet he claims he only eats 80 grams of protein. He doesnt talk about testosterone therapy that allows him to do what he does. He eats out alot because has the money to afford it. That doesnt apply to avg person unless its junk fast food. Talks about no need for fiber yet he eats salads lol. Endurance running may break down muscle but telling obese people not to exercise because it breaks down muscles is counter productive. Cardio can be used to burn calories and as appetite suppressant. This guy is all over the map, I cant keep up.

I got a different take from this interview. He thinks fiber is overrated but he likes the texture etc so he does eat some, even tho they aren't needed. I am the same. A lot of cardio is catabolic to muscle, and raises cortisol. I tried to do the extra cardio to lose weight and yes I lost weight but I ended up looking flat and flabby. I know I also lost muscle. Cortisol makes you fat.

I don't look at fiber if it's important or not. I look at it as how can I benefit from it. If I eat a salad first, I tend to eat less overall and it helps me maintain my weight. If I remove the salad first, I will overeat

Building muscles and doing excercise more than what is required isnt primal so if people want to strech your bodies resources to extreme states its obvious consequence is inflammation just blaming on diet plant or meat isnt ideal. Humans need to start being aware of their bodies collect data by listening to their own bodies and come to your own conclusions about diet and excercise. Use expert advises as a guideline but be open to adopt or discard.

This is a little concerning. Tennis is the sport that yields the healthiest athletes based on current data and they are akin to marathon runners. He would obviously discourage running because carnivore diet is not sustainable when you run - an exercise that is essential for cardiovascular health to strengthen your heart, and that also requires carbohydrates. Running or cardio exercise is for heart health and bodybuilding is for muscle health to prevent injury, among other benefits. It’s not one or the other. It’s both.

Tennis is more akin to sprinting than marathoning. It's a series of sprints between short rests. When I played competitively, I found that regular long runs harmed performance. Sprints and shuttle runs helped performance.

@@mikeg6860 LOL then you have no idea of how tennis is as a sport then. One tennis match can go as long as 11 hours straight! Nowadays the typical grand slam match for men is about 5-6 hours STRAIGHT with just 90 second breaks every odd game, that’s it. For women, it’s 3-4 hours long straight, that’s roughly one hour per set. Tennis is a best of 3 set match sport, but in grand slams, it’s best of 5 sets, for men.

​@@primelasst2955I agree that tennis is taxing - especially at the pro level. However, the endurance component in tennis is radically different than long distance running. Tennis is a continuous series of points that often last only seconds followed by a short rest, on and on. So, it's sprint-rest-sprint-rest.

His daily food, is less than 1400 calories as he describe, i call Bullshit on that... long term on such low calories intake he would look like a cancer patient , not a healthy guy... maybe the TRT helps you eating less, but I doubt it... I am sure he has days in the week he eats much more

Totally not informed about the microbiome. Sisson is clueless. Broad spectrum antibiotics, etc. can make people very ill and there can be only one solution, at present, FMT. He is clueless about the importance of ferments. He looks much older than his age, I hope he can improve his health by looks, as well as blood tests..

Jesse, you have great pod cast, Mark needs to get educated, there is a whole lots science on fibre and cold plunge, not necessarily for weight loss., but for mental health. Remember, that longest lived and healthiest people are in the blue zones which is pretty much Whole Food Plant Based. Mark is confused in the science
