There are several different schools of thought behind obesity and metabolic dysfunction, for example, the energy balance model or “calories-in, calories-out” perspective that many people have felt fooled by. While calories certainly are one piece, there is much more to the puzzle of weight management and metabolic health, like hormonal cascades and oxidative stress.
My guest today is the perfect person to discuss these topics with. Dr. Robert Lustig is an author and neuroendocrinologist with expertise in metabolism, obesity, and nutrition. He has dedicated his retirement from clinical medicine to help fix the food supply in any way he can, to reduce human suffering, and to promote a collective vision of metabolic health: protect the liver, feed the gut, support the brain.
In this episode, we discuss:
Is a calorie really just a calorie? (7:24)
The surprising truth: All models of energy intake are a little right and a little wrong (9:20)
Proven methods for reducing insulin to support weight loss (29:39)
What are obesogens and how are they hijacking our metabolic health? (32:00)
Reactive oxygen species and aging (and how to reduce them) (38:05)
Why glucose and insulin monitoring are powerful levers for metabolic health (42:15)
Summing up the facts and our beliefs around calories and weight (47:00)
The cellular impact of oxidative stress and chronic stress (54:00)
Monch Monch: a new fiber solution for absorbing simple sugars and preventing glucose spikes as well as increasing satiety and boosting microbial diversity (1:02:20)
Food addiction in adults and children and addressing the root cause (1:10:45)
What actions can we take based on scientific advances to make our lives better? (1:24:15)
Why any food that feeds the gut, protects the liver, and supports the brain is a healthy food (1:33:35)
Perfact and how to use it to understand what is metabolically healthy at your exact grocery store (1:40:20)

I was eating keto, berries, nuts and veggies but still sick and unfamed and still had a bloated gut. I finally discovered what led to my insulin resistance and unexplained weight gain: GLYPHOSATE!!! I started eating organic. The weight started falling off and I feel SO much better! I'm healthy again.

Unfortunately, the American public (and the world) believes "Doctors". Unfortunately most of them are NOT taught the real facts of the body. And, we still know so little about our own body. Very little in the supermarket is actually food that keeps us healthy. I have made it my mission to learn about our body,food and cancer. I am a horrible student. But I try.

@krakraichbinda
@krakraichbinda Ай бұрын
@@altagraciabaez5809 Well, I live in Europe (Germany), so I have no problems to buy non processed food. - avoid any processed food (labelled) - read the labels and count the sugar amount not calories - cook for yourself from scratch - buy low starchy vegetables - avoid consumption of starch, white bread, sugar and softdrinks (no sodas, fantas). Eat whole fruits instead. - avoid High Fructose Corn Sirup in any product - find the best way to achieve a satiety point while you eat. A bunch of home-made salad can make you full for many hours. Some people practice a carnivore diet, some keto or low carb diet. It doesn't really matter, the main thing is your blood sugar remains low, but it is still not hypoglycemic. - for check health, please estimate your homocysteine levels, vitamin d, fasting glucose and insulin. Talk to your doctor about it. - exercise not for calories, but for insulin sensitivity in your muscles. Personally, I prefer walking or biking, but not running. - you can find more advices at Dr. Jason Fung, Dr Sten Ekberg. But they are talking the same story.

Angioplasty can be done in an emergency setting, such as a heart attack." Plaque buildup causes the inside of the arteries to narrow over time. This process is called atherosclerosis."

Ngl, this is yet another reason why I'd only ever homeschool. I've seen the nasty junk served by the vast majority of schools. Senator Amy Klobuchar even fought for pizza sauce to be classified as one of the "vegetables" in school lunches; and only changed her position when she wanted to run for president and people were calling out her ridiculous, anti-nutritional nonsense. No school will ever care about our children the way we as parents will.

Size isn't everything but I share this for perspective. From teens to late twenties, I was a size zero - couldn't gain. Late twenties to late thirties, I was a size two - my efforts finally paid off. I had a surprise baby in my late thirties - afterwards, I was a size six. 👍 A couple years later, I gained 45 pounds in two weeks!!!!!! Nobody could explain this to me or help me. I started a carnivore diet followed by a keto diet and I've dropped 27 lbs in two months. Thank you gentlemen. I am beginning to understand what my body has been going through. Making good, steady effort was never a challenge for me - having no results despite all my efforts was the challenge. Thank you!!

Problem with this, while very informative, is the lack of useful discussion of what type of dietary intake you need to head towards to achieve lower insulin. Yes, they talk about how processed food is bad for you, but what exactly are the types of things should make up our diet to help us reach our goals. There’s too much why and not enough how in this video. Even Lustig says he’s changed his mind in the last 2 or 3 years about what he thinks is important.

OK, I agree. I would suggest if you buy packaged food limit to to two maximum three ingredients. Don't buy processed oils. Don't eat sugar. If you have to use sweetners, maybe use stevia. Don't eat regularly potatoes, bread, pasta, cake, biscuits, and chips/crisps. Eat a salad with oil vingar dressing for lunch every day and skip breakfast five days a week. Have your evening meal before 7 pm, then only coffee/tea until lunch the next day. Eat meat and fish with green veg and low density veg with every evening meal. If you have to snack, use pistachios, walnuts, or brasil nuts. Eat lesser sweet fruits with Kefir as deserts. Lastly, treats are OK but should be occasional treats. Cook all your own food and eat out as a special occasion. If your drinking alcohol limit it to weekends and favour wine over beer and watch the volume. I've done this, and it's changed everything.

This is a great detailed explanation on weight loss, guys. And it’s so true there are so many factors that can contribute to stalling the process - it’s a minefield. For me, I feel that my problem has always been facing higher cortisol levels, lower testosterone levels, and metabolic adaptation after weeks or months of trying any kind of diet with caloric restriction. One great thing I’ve tried over the past year that has worked wonders is standardized hot-water Tongkat Ali root extract. Just 2 capsules (400mg) a day over the course of a few months has helped keep my stress (cortisol) levels low and my hormone levels in balance even in light of attempting things like caloric restriction + intense workouts. Even better, my metabolism’s never felt more efficient. Gonna keep on it and see how far I can take it.

I've struggled with a food addiction, especially towards sugar. There were times when I'd wake up in the middle of the night intending to get a glass of water, only to find myself indulging in chocolate cake or dipping into a jar of Nutella. In the past, I used to consume large Redbulls and Toblerones throughout the day. However, I've made positive changes and shifted my focus to a healthier addiction: playing badminton and jogging. Anyways I was curious when I saw this, is this Tongkat Ali extract a supplement? And if does claim to do things as you say, I'd like to try it for myself!

At 23 (2000) y/o dx of narcolepsy which btw affects the hypothalamus! Can I not see my leptin? I don’t make the protein hypocretin. In 2020, I ended up with a rare type of endocrine hyperplasia (DIPNECH) after a lung surgery/removal. I’ve always had such difficulty losing weight. What do u suggest ? do u think i have insulin resistance?

Monch Monch just $150 for a 1 month supply. (On sale at this writing for $105.) They get the ingredients off Amazon and mix it up. What can I say? Why am I not surprised. I loved the information in this video, but the hawking of the product was very disappointing.

Which of the four categories do artificial sweeteners fall into? I’m trying to lose those last 10 pounds. If I take my diet down to 10 total carbs, the weight comes off. If I introduce certain sweeteners, even if supposedly within my 10 grams of carbs, the weight loss stops! I do also feel water logged the next day after ingesting sweeteners. So, is that a ROS issue, an obesogen issue, or is it shutting down one of the three pathways? Is it raising insulin (my blood sugar 30 minutes after diet soda was 79). I can stick to a plan sooo much better if I can visualize exactly what (pathway) or other factor is being adversely affected. Thank you.

Luckily Couric's movie Fed Up was here in theaters years ago and had a huge impact on me. However, it took me ten years to sort it all out, thanks in large part to researchers/doctors like Lustig, Hyman, Attia, Phinney & Volek, Fung, Mutzel, Gundry, Bredesen, Bozworth, Berry, Bikman, Cummins, Ekberg, Fallon, Rheaume-Bleue, Perlmutter, Davis, Pelz, and more ...

I have listened to the podcasts about GLP1 and read some touching comments from diabetes who have lost massive amounts of weight and have their glucose under control. So the drug sounded great and I don't blame people for trying it. Then I found some comments from people who said the GI side effects almost killed them . One woman said she couldn't eat for 5 days and fortunately the neighbors called an ambulance ( ? GI blockage). Took the lady months to recover, partially due to muscle loss. It would be great if they had some wayof telling who was at high risk for GI side effects. I agree with one comment that there will eventually law suits against these drugs. I agree be sure the docs want to keep people on forever and the longer you stay on a drug, the more side effects are more likely to materialize.

I’m diagnosed with Hashimoto’s. Eat an anti inflammatory diet. Literally NO sugar and low carb, intermittent fast, Get sun exposure and exercise regularly. Even with meds and natural supplements My blood sugar is still borderline diabetes. And I can’t lose weight no matter what I do. I can’t figure out why??plus My T3 is not converting to T4. I’m stumped.
@lindajones4849

Question: are you male or female ? If you are female the drop in estrogen in perimenopause/ menopause can cause insulin resistance. Also T3 is the ACTIVE form of the thyroid hormone T4 is inactive form . Did you mean T4 is not being converted to T3?? If this is what you meant , I think this reaction requires selenium( not sure) . I have thyroid problems but Hashimotos is not my issue. Dr. Ridha Arem has written a book called the Thyroid Solution that I recommend. Are you on thyroid meds? What is your TSH?? For some people ( like me) who had my thyroid removed and can't efficiently convert T4 to T3 , I take a combination of meds, one med that is pure T4 and one med that is pure T3. T3 only can be too overstimulating . Good luck.

@@lindajones4849 I'm female. Yes sorry- I meant T4 TO T3 Conversion. My estrogen has been checked and looks ok. I am on Tirosint 50/75 mcg and a natural med that has T3 in it. And I east brazil nuts to the point that my selenium is high, so I backed off for a while. Not sure what to do but Thank you for the comment!

Hey there! I’m a 57 year old female and I take synthroid for my thyroid. My weight loss did not start happening until I incorporated fasting with low carb eating. The drop in estrogen will sometimes make women insulin resistant and that was the case for me. I did fasting gradually by first eliminating breakfast, went to OMAD, and this month I’m fasting all day on M, W, and F. This has been a game changer for me. I hope this helps.

Monch monch isn't even for sale till May.. sigh. But beyond that... Both men have some great views. It would be nice to learn how to reset leptin and insulin though, it seems... If you aren't an elite, you will suffer from bad health. And that's why the medical system is broken Giving people information isn't enough. ... Solutions needs to be practical and easily available for all us who aren't at the top of the food chain.

These two splendid talking heads - evolved humans - represented the minimum standard of human in my young, idealistic imagination. Boy, did I get shock after shock, on an hourly basis over the decades, each time I kept finding that the likes of these gentlemen and gentlewomen were the rarest of rare, whose existence I was able to become aware of only once the internet became accessible to me! No wonder the world is such a mess.
