you are so correct on everything you said ....I recently left a school I attended for 15 yrs. (shotokan karate) after I got back from an overseas trip ....during my time there in the orient I saw a couple of krate schools...one of them being a shotokan school... I spoke to the lead instructor and he allowed me to train with them ...I can't believe the difference in contact and speed ...I my school here in the states (Florida) I was always being told I was too aggressive and to tone it down when sparring ....I wasn't trying to kill anybody ...just always like to feel some kind of contact before I pulled my strike ... that was not the case overseas ....the instructor looked at me and told me to hit harder/faster ...could not believe it ...we spoke afterwards and he said he see's this a lot in the martial artist from the U.S. ....when I got back to the states I told my instructor and came out and said the same thing you just said ....if he had classes like that ...he would have very few students and that doesn't pay the rent ....I ended up leaving because he admitted to me that he is interested in bring up point fights ...not full contact fights like I saw overseas ....just had to share this with because you were on point ....thanks for speaking the truth...

When I was younger I trained Uechi karate. Once we ranked we were always taught to punch each other hard enough to hurt but not do lots of damage. I carried this over to a few MMA places I went to and got a reputation for sparring too hard (learned to ligthen up by getting double legged and face pounded, great teacher actually, also got me using my reach better). I was beginning to think i was just over grandizing how hard we sparred in my karate until I moved to Japan and went to one of the Dojos and a 5th graded just absolutely brutalized my body in what was light sparring,.

I've never really focused on breaking - am I lacking something? I've done decent in sparring and some say my hands do have some weight to em (which I'm not totally sure either way). but am I lacking something??

No, you are not really lacking anything. I would say that you should condition your hands as though you were going to break. It is good for taking impact on your hands when punching.

thank you, I've worked on makiwara before just never really broke. I'm going to work more on this. Thanks again, mr sayf
