Inside of the concentration camps, there were many former SS guards who became notorious for their brutal treatment of prisoners. When the US Army liberated Dachau at the end of the Second World War, they came across a camp where execution and torture was carried out on a daily basis. But one guard who fled and went missing was Egon Zill. He was known at Dachau for being a brutal and savage man, who would encourage his dogs to maul prisoners when they were tied to trees and posts.
Egon Zill would use torture on a daily basis making use of the standing cells and other barbaric practices to inflict pain and suffering onto prisoners. He was later made the Commandant of Flossenburg and also Natzweiler-Struthof, but was later sacked as he was considered not as well educated in a military capacity. He served on the Eastern Front following this, and he then went underground after the war. But he was arrested and was brought to trial, but if he had been tried earlier he would certainly have been executed rather than gaining a prison sentence.

My friend Dan Romay was a prisoner at Dachau for a while until he was transferred to other camps he related many stories as Dan had been a forced laborer from the age of 14 to 19 when he escaped. He was tortured or beaten in almost all of the camps from time to time. Dan has departed this world leaving at the age of 92 and he is missed.

It demonstrates how revolting those people were when they press-ganged locals to become 'SS Auxiliaries'. These suckers were left to run this hellhole whilst the criminals ran for it. Of course, it was the dupes that suffered the full fury of the inmates once the Allies arrived. Those Professional Nazis were vile not only to innocent people, but to their own too.

@von-Adler 11 ай бұрын
Don't know the letters but the deathshead was a warning for opening the door - that's where prisoners clothing was deloused by steam. There was no gas chamber at Dachau but being near the Crematorium which could heat water it was designed as a shower room and had windows. Just before liberation the Dachau guards force marched most prisoners South. In their place around 80 Waffen SS from a fighting unit were brought in as guards. Their order fly the white flag and surrender to the US troops. This they did - they had one second Lieutenant officer. In the well known US War Crime all guards were killed many by machine gun. Outside the camp a train of trucks were found full of prisoners from other camps. They were dead from exposure etc on the journey. There was no locomotive. There was one survivor

my uncle was in the WWII 82nd Airborne Division and was one of the first to go in Wöbbelin, a subcamp of the Neuengamme He said they could smell it two miles away Told me the bodies were stacked including many German guards Most looked like they died from typhus He said at this point in the war the Germans were having trouble feeding themselves but they were still feeding the prisoners something Afterwards the news reel people came in they had the prisoners strip the dead Germans and toss them on pile of dead prisoners then took photos of all the dead starved prisoners The prisoners that were not sick or very skinny were made certain to stay out of the photos My uncle who fought the Germans in not a few battles, he got the bronze star, said that some were bad guys but so were many Americans and British too.

He's simply pointing out that war is messy. One side's government may be fighting for the more noble cause but there will be sadistic individuals in every country's military. The difference is when the cruelty is ordered by the top level of a nation's authorities. Organised mass cruelty is of a different order than individual acts of cruelty performed in the heat of battle.

@Jamie_Wulfyr Yeah My Lei and Auschwitz are like a celery seed compared to a cocnut! However even the higher echelon that created and natured this industrial homicide of Jewish peoples for over a half decade couldn't have succeeded so well without the help of the entire world. The Anti-semitic sentiments run deep around the globe. The number of countries that offered persecuted Jews unlimited access to become immigrants with opportunity of a normal life can be counted on one hand and Vatican City is not one of them. The Holocaust is much more complex than a bunch of Duetsch gangsters who conned their countrymen into plundering Europe and exterminating Jews, Gypsies, Gays, Free Masons, devout Catholics and Communists. After the regime was in place, if you were a chemist or an engineer and wanted to have contact from the government, you have to stay very close to the politicians, and if you wanted to keep your business and have contact during the war, you had to be a member of the party. It's similar to the engineer or doctors, if they decided to put you in an SS unit, you become one. My grandfather was in the SS as an engineer, and despite he didn't participate in any atrocities, he was sent to a soviet forced labour camp for 10 years, only because he happened to be a member of the SS. He was the equivalent of a Colonel.
