Throughout the Second World War there were many executions carried out by the German Army and the SS. One of the most shocking series of executions took place in France in 1940, after the capture of a number of colonial soldiers. Near to the city of Lyon, the Senegalese colonial fighters who fought for the French Army were overpowered and they were then marched into a field by members of the SS and the Wehrmacht. Following them were two tanks/panzers.
Inside of the field, the officers were forced to lie down in the mud, but then the prisoners were told to run away from the tanks. As they tried to make a run for it, the tanks opened their machine guns on the prisoners. This event became known as the Chasselay Massacre, and it was a shocking and brutal execution of soldiers that took place inside of France.
