In 1948, the UN partitioned the land whittled down from the boundries set by the League of Nations to an undefensible sliver with the rest going to set up another Arab State. They have not ceased since in this goal and have launched constant attacks and 3 major military attempts to destroy Israel. Miraculously, each time they lost men and territory including Judea and Samaria. I'm 71 years old and grew up thinking Israel could do no wrong. I had Jewish neighbors and knew we were very much the same sort of people and had very much the same attitudes about life or at least we shared the same neighborhoods and could easily understand each other, A Jewish identity was something Jewish people had to remind me of, not something I tended to notice or even care much about. And even as a kid the schools reminded us of the abuses of the Nazi regime but it became an almost exclusively Jewish holocaust over the years and the nearly equal number of other people the Nazi's didn't want around were never really mentioned. The death camps were multifunctioning. . But in college I started to hear about the Palestinians and realized the story was not so one sided. If I did hear about it, the media made it always a case that the Palestinians were usually radicals and dangerous and the Israelis were brave defenders against persecution. Nearly 20 years later, The internet gave access to information like UN history and resolutions I had never really heard much about regarding the torturous history of Israeli-Palestinian relations that was not easy to see without it. That blew the roof off the subject and I no longer believe Israel can do no wrong. BTW - I was not interested in politics, hardly ever read newspapers and listened to TV and radio news like it was musak or semi informative wallpaper.. I know one has to tread carefully when discussing Israel and it is guaranteed aggravating and frustrating to even think about it. But I am kind of disgusted with the idea of Zionism for the simple reason one couldn't found anything like that philosophy in this country or under our constitution. European countries, and many others, may have de facto ethnic or religious identities but I don't think any of them make that identity a part of their own constitutions. The Middle East still clings to its religious and ethnic identities by law and perhaps that's the only place that Zionism can really exist? They all tend to think the same way and that's such a pity and as far I as I'm concerned and not to be admired. I feel no obligation to believe in the rightness or justice of the idea of a Jewish homeland. It may have been a source of great joy and comfort following WWII but it sure doesn't look so splendid or right today. The whole region is looking more and more like an outlier. I was born in a country where religious and ethnic identity did not guarantee one a "Homeland" with "one's kind" and I find it very hard to support others who think that is necessary. Ethnic neighborhoods have their charm but they are not really something it is very admirable to fight or die for and they probably wouldn't be at all charming if they did. We moved around a lot when I was younger and I never seemed to acquire a taste for that kind of exclusivity. It can tend to make bigotry and narrow mindedness some kind of virtue.

In political speech, the expression "American values" is frequently used. Americans' values are the values held by most of the American people and the values that American politicians would like others to believe underlie US foreign policy. One could also draw conclusions about American values from what the US government does abroad and even domestically. Americans' values and American values as discernible from the latter are very different. I think it essential that the two terms be carefully differentiated at the start of any discussion in which they are used.

The Israeli lobby has tremendous influence but most of that influence ironically isn't because of Jews per se. It's because a large segment of Christian evangelicals think by being uber-zionists they are fulfilling Christian biblical prophecy. Without that religious support, the Israeli lobby group would still have influence but at more normalized levels. Where some Jewish Israeli nationalists groups play dirty is smearing anyone that criticizes Israeli government policies towards minorities as "anti-semitism" then applying economic and political pressure to critics (as Mearsheimer himself was attacked for stating captain obvious). This behavior is typically coming from rightwing uber-Zionists very often ones that are Orthodox. Leftwing Jews, who are typically principled on issues related to human rights (including Israel) are smeared as "self-hating Jews" by both by segment of rightwing Christians and Jews alike (although there are exceptions to this rule, see "liberals" like Alan Dershowitz)

There are 22 Arab States on 50X the amount of land of Israel. It is the brutal colonial interests of those Arab countries who cannot abide a small non-Arab controlled country in the Middle East that are the source of the problem. All the Arab countries are essentially Judearein-no Jews allowed and at the same time there are 1.8 million Muslims thriving in Israel. The Arab States are colonialist and practice Apartheid. I think it's interesting that they openly acknowledge the theological motivations of Christian Zionists, but present Jewish motivation as purely political in nature (at least in this talk) Also, the proposed remedy at 1:02:44 (campaign finance reform, which he says won't happen; open discussion of the issues/open discourse; waiting for moderate groups in the Israel lobby to become more influential while hoping hard-line groups recognize that the current policies they support are detrimental) seems *really* insufficient. I understand that they're being cautious, and that despite this extreme caution they're still attacked, vilified, and sidelined from mainstream intellectual discourse, but to any thinking person the extremeness of this caution should indicate that pro-Israel/Jewish lobbying groups have influence that *FAR* exceeds the political sphere, and that they have no intention to abide by ideals of "open discourse", and that they in fact have been very successful at attacking such ideals, much to the detriment of the U.S. democratic process.

As far back as 1969, I was taught as a infant Christian, by sources that were also taught this same false idea, that to wit, God will bless those that bless Israel and curse those that curse Israel. This idea comes from Genesis 12:1-3, a promise to Abraham, but is given double fulfillment meaning by American Futurist Evangelicals, speaking of the predominant view in the US of "last" things (eschatology), to the time when Israel became a nation-state in 1948 and extending until Christ's return or parousia that they believe is at some point in our future. This view is held by most American "Christians" and it seems to have propagated this false idea. It is real and it will be hard to let the truth be known. This Dispensational Futurist view and "love' of Israel, whose God we share, has been essentially weaponized and has otherwise good people only seeing Israel as good and not giving a second thought to the way they treat their neighbors, the Palestinians, which is worse they they would treat a wild dog. Also, make no mistake the average Israel hates American Christians. The view that these Jews are the same people that were led out of Egypt, built a tabernacle and occasionally obeyed God, are the same Jews who are in the country Israel is false. This new Israel fundamentally is Israel in name only. What American Christians think Israel is really doesn't exist. So, in AD70 God judged Israel for killing the prophets and becoming what it had become by the hands of the Roman army. He divorced it, he destroyed it all... the country, Jerusalem and the Temple. In fact, the hate of one Jew for the other was to blame for the Jewish war. I totally agree that we should view and help Israel when it is in the interest of the US, and treat them just like any other nations. American, please wake up.
