This is awesome. 100% agree with you that the market should adjust their dated preconceptions about gender sizing and styling. This model is reeeally close to being a perfect blend of style, size, function and value. I agree that the finish could be more durable and include some breakup of the polished look with some brushed accents. Also, more traditional band mounting/size would allow a lot of flexibility. I'd love to see them develop this model further as it's close to being perfect- just needs a few tweaks. Lastly, I agree with you once again about the logo placement as that would create more balance and symmetry . Thanks for the review of this one- I never would have noticed this model otherwise.

The GMS-5600SB-1DR arrived today and I was surprised by how thin/small it is. This version has a matte black bezel. It sits really well on my twig wrist. Casio finally made a G-Shock that was closer to the size of their classic F-91W with all the water resistance and shock protection of its bigger brothers. The strap is even more comfortable than the regular Squares.

But maybe that´s part of the appeal creating a certain niche that might be limited yet still perfectly right for the right kind of watch person. I got a gbd 5000umd 1jf. It's a black square G shock at 38mm. It's for the Japanese market. I blacked out the baby G lettering so it can't be seen anymore. Put a bull bar and an army green canvas strap on it using jayandkays 14mm to 20mm strap adapter. It looks tough and fits me perfectly. Wear what you like based on what works for you.

Apparently you have to check their latest release of steel watch, the GST-B400 Said to be the thinnest and smallest full stainless steel G-Shock with fully featured ana-digi module, I think you have to check that out TGV 👍🏼

I agree that the polished case is a bit disappointing. Under certain lighting conditions, if the silly thing is winking at people across the room... lol then it's a bit difficult to wear it with proper understatement, I might think. If the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak can make good use of brushed metal (perhaps even for this very reason) then why can't this Casio? It makes little sense. As for the smaller size, I love it, as my wrist is a mere 5.75" in size. This is about the largest size I can wear. Loved the vid! Cheers!

I have one and I think that the only reason it's ignored is due to the idiotic decision from Casio to brand it as a women's watch and they don't even do a good job at it because on one of their web sites they claim verbatim that "it's a watch for women who prefer mannish G-SHOCK styling". Wow, that's really a nicely sexist and derogatory comment neatly packaged in one phrase that manage to both hint that it's only suitable for a certain type of women that are not really into men and that the G-Shockness of the watch only goes as deep as the external design. How more hopefully clueless can a marketing department be?? It's an excellent G-Shock and exactly what the doctor prescribed to someone who likes the iconic DW-5600 but keep wishing it was a bit smaller. The negative display can be a PITA, thought.

To say that smart watches are characterless, uninspired, pedestrian is just a watch lover being a snob. It is a tool watch. A few decades ago watch lovers scoffed at digital watches. I preordered this G-Shock before Casio released it, and kept it about six months before gifting it to my teenage daughter, who loves it. It is highly versatile, a perfect size, and eye-catching. Even though Casio improved the module, I feel the reverse display can still be challenging to read in low light. And, every time I picked it up, I expected it to be hefty because of the metal case, but it is light like any resin watch. Maybe Casio could put a stainless steel inner case on this model like on the GW-5000-1JF just to give it a little more mass?

If u want a midsize between GMS5600-1 and the DW5600 you should definetly see the G5600E.. it look exactly like the DW5600 but a bit smaller, solar powered and updated text font. Best most underrrated G shock square ever.. :)

whatever your weekday attire is, you too must go on hikes, walks, runs, bikerides in the weekend. you too also probably do some workout, sometimes do some gardening, or go to a spa or something. all of those scenarios, i use my g shock for. i have the baby g bgd 560, the normal black with positive display. essentially this same watch with the normal display and all black resin, perfect if you ask me, and probably costs a third of this gms. at 50-60usd, you wont really mind if you only use it once a week even. although i go terrain cycling at least 5times a week and i either use the baby g, or my ae1200, but i guess not everyone does. the good thing is, even this gms is still somewhat cheap, so you wont lose much.

i hope casio would revive some of their more premium digital watches from the 80s and early 90s.. they dont have to be under the g shock line. instead i wish they would be more thin and dressy while being all metal with some of the new features like solar power, world time and bluetooth time calibration.. it would be nice to have a more dressy digital watch to wear on week days to the office and save the g shocks for the weekend adventures.

I was hopeful this would be available in a similar finish combination to the full size metal square, along with the engraving on the face. Something about the full polished, engraving-less case almost seems cheap compared to the mixed finishing on the full size model. I love my standard full metal, despite its weight and relative size to my 6.5" wrist, but would have snapped up a miniaturized version in a second had it been a bit closer to the original in design. The lack of solar is tough, too - that feature on the full size is a huge value add for me.

I agree completely. I feel the same way about the "minimalist' versions of the 5600 square. While the writing and labels are a bit gauche, they really add some visual intrigue to the watch. Without the writing the screen looks miniscule and the bezel looks huge.

A great review TGV, a very constructive review. I like the more minimalist approach to the GMS, it seems to add a touch of elegance to what is a tool watch. I could not agree more with the comment on the lug spacing, a 16mm strap would look odd. I also think it would be good if they made a solar version but I guess that may add thickness and certainly add cost. I do not baby my watches so have to agree that finger prints and scratches are an inevitable part of life, I kid myself by saying it adds character after all watches are meant to be worn. It would be handy to have a few more wrists for more watches but that would make clothing a tad more difficult. I do like my G-Shock watches, somehow I always seem to want (but not always purchase) another one. I have a couple of the full metal ones including the full stainless (bling monster) with the positive display, I don't know what Casio have done but is a fair bit better than my old 5610 solar display. I recently go the new full metal red version (I call it the Chianti) with the negative display and that knocks spots off my resin 5600 negative display. They certainly have upped there game display wise.

I've got pretty big wrists at 7 and a quarter inches, but I prefer smaller watches. I think this might be my perfect G-Shock. I'll have to get one at some point

Hi, TGV! There is a version which has a brushed bezel, but it has a kind of white or transparent strap. Anyway, you could buy that one ("GM-S5600SK-7") and you'll just have to change the stainless steel armor between them. Let's see how it looks like! And, by the way, the other resulting watch could be for your wife! ;)
