Great points TGV! I also asked these very same questions with my first Omega purchase online. Positive feedback is very helpful. Make sure to read those feedback too, even though generic, it might tell you the shipping, the packaging and if the description of the auction is accurate. When I bought my Omega from a seller, I was pleased to have a response time of a few hours. This told me the seller was invested in making my purchase as pleasant as possible. Great video TGV, as always!

Excellent video! (again) I was about to pull the trigger on a 90's omega seamaster about 2 weeks ago. I asked those same questions and the guy didn't knew squat. As a buyer, the more informations/knowledge you have, the more power to you. Was able to drop 200$ off the price with those questions. He decided to keep the watch. Knowledge=Power. As for everything in life. Thank you again TGV, very informative!

I like to call the seller. Alot of times you can get a good feeling of who you're buying from that way. If the seller is well informed and knowledgeable specifically about the exact item you're buying that is obviously a positive. Calling is also a good way to find out how responsive a seller is, it's also faster (in theory) than email. Although I would note that to have your questions answered in writing can occasionally be very valuable. I feel these rules are very well laid out and comprehensive. Excellent video. Pure Class

All of these questions are perfectly reasonable. But speaking for myself (which is why I don't do vintage watches) it's one thing to ask the question, but entirely another to verify if the answer is truthful. The seller may not even know him/herself. One can ask if the parts are original or genuine, but if the answer is "yes", how do you verify without an in-depth knowledge of that particular watch or model? Not having this experience, I would have to go through a trusted dealer who had the knowledge and experience to vet these things out-- especially if I'm dropping real money on a vintage timepiece. I think your advice at around 7:15 is the best: Go with a trusted seller. That way if you don't have the experience, or don't want the hassle of going through a dealer/middleman, this is your best bet- especially if they offer guarantees or return policy.

Good tips all. I've had good luck in all my purchases, but this is good info. Buying second hand/grey market luxury watches is the only way I feel I can justify the money spent which means I have to spend more time buying the seller. Having said that, I don't mind a polish done well as I tend to keep my watches rather than flip them. So I guess my only tip is this: never buy on first instinct, always let it go a while. If you still want it, ask all the questions and make up your mind if it's worth it. Some of my favourite pieces are polished (well). I don't mind at all.

TGV, thank you so much for this wonderfully, insightful advice! I’ve been on the hunt for a particular watch, found it on Chrono24, reached out to the seller with your questions, and was met with an interesting answer. He responded with “It is impossible for me to answer all of those questions. Because of this, I will not sell you this watch.” Not sure if he wasn’t knowledgeable about the time piece or if he was just looking to turn a quick buck on someone? Anyways, I moved along as it didn’t feel right. Thank you again for all of your wonderful content!!

Excellent. I recently made 3 separate Rolex purchases from a dealer I found on Ebay, located in MO. Two had aftermarket (not Rolex) crystals that were not disclosed. Fortunately, the return policy allowed me to return them. I found Ebay accounts for two dealers, oddly sharing the same address. These two dealers are responsible for a high percentage of the Rolex listings on Ebay...a situation that essentially fosters price setting-artificially high prices, designed to give the impression that market prices is higher than reality. I also found that many of these Rolex sellers appear to have large inventories of used Rolex watches, but in reality, they are advertising watches they don't have in inventory, but can acquire from other sources. Don't accept crappy cell phone pics on a long distance deal. Ask for high res images, emailed so they can be viewed on a full size monitor. If they don't comply with this request, they may be hiding defects.

Regarding asking how the watch is performing, that is quite significant. And so true, it is incredible how many sellers don't say whether or not the watch is working (if they bother to include a description at all). Even though they say the watch is running, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's keeping good time. Having purchased many used pieces, I've been burned on quite a few.

Ciao Tristano! When someone is concentrated on the purchase, could happen that he is so excited that forgets all the important questions to ask (to me happen!! :-]) to avoid disappointments or scams. This is the reason why your video is the guideline to follow step by step, hence...thanks a lot for sharing it!! But for the moment, and for the above mentioned reasons, I'm prefering to buy brand new watches (less then 1 k/eur). This because I have the warranty, the origianl boxes and papers, the return is granted and because...I'm the first to wear it! PS: another suggestion I have for you all: If you have doubts, especially for those sellers not present on the most used markets (like ebay, chrono24 and so on) be sure to check online the status of the VAT code on the specific website of the Tax Authority of each country. You can see if the license is active or not (this means that is selling or not), you can see from when it is active and the name of the owner of the VAT code as well. In Italy this is possible through the website of AGENZIA DELLE ENTRATE. Once happened to me that I had doubts (the price was really to low!), and in this way I found that the VAT was not registered (or it has been retrat, I don't remember). I saved money!! Always be careful because......"fidarsi, è bene. Non fidarsi, è meglio!"

TGV you've always been an icon to me when it comes to the watch world. You actually aspired me into collecting watches. It's one of the older models released a long time ago with the two canteen caps that screw down to keep the crowns safe from any water damage that may occur. I avoid eBay like the plague for watches for this very reason. Also, there are a large amount of scammers on eBay selling replica watches while stating they are authentic. The one good thing is that eBay does have buyer protection, so as long as you document everything carefully, you should get your money back!

I think I would have split the question of warranty out of question 3 and put it into a question of it's own, because it's so important. Because you need to know, who is providing the warranty, the seller, the manufacturer (if you were buying nearly new) or a third party. How long is the warranty? How do you claim, who do you contact? Will any paperwork be provided for said warranty? If the piece is being sold with the balance of it's manufacturer's international warranty, does the watch come with a valid AD stamped and/or activated warranty card? Might be handy to know who the original AD was and when the watch was originally sold new, though this would crossover with question 8 about determining the item's ownership history. Be wary if the watch might have been originally been sold grey.

Always do your homework before you pull the trigger. great video with lots of great tips. I must confess that I hesitate buying second hand. Some of the pieces I like don't come with box or papers or even both.I can't understand how this is possible coming from trusted dealers (chrono 24) that sometimes are jewelers in their own countries. I guess that for brands like Omega or Rolex you can send the piece to Switzerland and get it serviced and obtain a warranty of the repair and a box. However you'll spend a lot of cash buying a "birth certificate to your piece".
@theurbangentry8 жыл бұрын
Very true. Well, form ym own experience I have sold watches without the box or papers imply because I left them in other countries I had lived in and they simply were too costly or large to bring with me, that's is just me. Hi...I think also when buying a watch, don't buy one that is just showing a stock photo, or only one photo of the watch...Also ask for the size of the watch, and length of the bracelet/strap, no good to you if it arrives, and it looks like a pin on your arm, (ask for the diameter!) or doesn't fit, due to it not being long enough, could end up costing you quite a bit for extra links, especially on a high end watch....If the watch bracelet has been altered/shortened, ask if it comes with the links that have been removed!

Excellent and very helpful video When buying from a private seller, Is it ok to ask for serial number, to do your own research? Asking for extra photos, or even taking yours in order to doublecheck i guess sounds fine. I am interested to buy a Longines watch, as far as I already checked, Longines gives for free an "Extract from Archives", an official Longines paper in English about any of their masterpieces. This is not an authenticity paper (you have to pay for it) but at least it's for free. You only need to provide them the serial number and high quality photographs. Could the excistence (or not) of this paper provide some kind of information about the seller. For what "innocent" reason someone who claims to own an original piece, doesn't provide a "zero cost" paper like that?

All great questions. The seller's reputation and the time keeping/performance of the watch are the 2 main ones I rely on. I'm a member of WatchUSeek and I ALWAYS look at their postings and activity on the forums as a guide to how they'll be to deal with. While not specifically a question I do value those that contribute to the forums and feel they're going to be better sellers/buyers than those that don't contribute at all. Of course, there's always exceptions to all of these points but they are good general rules to go by. I've yet to have problems buying and selling from fellow forumites and like minded enthusiasts. Hi TGV, Thank you for this helpful video. It could really help when I'm in a rush again to make a seemingly bargain! ;) But sometimes you have to take a risk. I bought my vintage Atlantic Worldmaster marked as "defect". It was obvious the seller has absolutely no experience with watches. He even put on the strap the wrong way. But from his description and the photos he provides, I was sure I could take the risk. Best regards, Claus

Thank you Claus, very good point as always, sometimes a risk can pay off. Best regards, TGV

I love the Omega Speedmaster Dark side of the moon, but it's way too expensive for me. What would you recommend around $2500 that looks like it?
@theurbangentry8 жыл бұрын
Excellent question, I recently saw a Tissot chrono that looks remarkably similar, also a Swatch too (the destination NYC I believe) thank you. Best regards, TGV

The Urban Gentry Thanks for the answer. I'll check them out and I will probably have more questions for you before I buy any of them!

Great points! I am new to all this. What about the seller having the original receipt as opposed to just box and papers. Is that part crucial or are box and papers enough?

hi tgv, can you do a counter video to this one maybe looking into the best way for someone who is not a watch dealer and wants to sell their watch? Its all very well buying watches and going through your checklist but the moment someone like myself has brought the watch, if i then decide to sell it i have nothing to go on? no reputation for instance.. whats the best way to sell as a layman is what im trying to say

Very good question, that is a whole other video in itself. I will add it to the list! Thank you, Best regards, TGV

Hi, just for clarification, what's the difference between points 10 and 9, original vs genuine? I.e. Can a part be original from Rolex but not genuine for that particular model? Was that what you meant? Thank you.
@theurbangentry8 жыл бұрын
Very good question, a part can be genuine but NOT the original maybe due to being repaired/service etc. As for your second question, that is always a possible too! Thank you. Best regards, TGV

I guess he wanted to say that if any part is not the original part when the watch was produced, it should be at least a genuine replacement part... I guess... Good content TGV. Regards.

Thank you Connor, good question, this was more so for used watches BUT, best to always ask as much or as many (that apply) to buying any watcher that matter. Best regards, TGV

Great video, as always! Good job. I would also add checking for valid AD stamps in the certificate, especially if it's a high end luxury watch. If you did mention this in your video and I somehow missed it, I do apologize.

Governor, what are your thoughts on the Borealis Estoril 300 watch? Do you consider it as a good and cheaper alternative to a Seamaster, or is it jus an "homage"?
@theurbangentry8 жыл бұрын
Well, of course I think its a great looker, having reviewed the SM300 recently, does look like a Homage off the bat, BUT... to answer your question I would have to see it in the flesh, more importantly, what do you make of it? Thank you Luca, Best regards, TGV
@lshin808 жыл бұрын
The Urban Gentry Thank you Governor. I just discovered Borealis, and everybody seems to go crazy for their watches. Most of them are blatant homages - not cheap crappy copies: they're well built and bang for the buck... but still homages. The Estoril looks great to me, but then I remembered your Seamaster review, and I realized that's why I like it: it looks like a Seamaster. Even if it's unlikely I'll ever be able to afford a Seamaster, getting an homage would feel like I'm not getting the real McCoy. So I've got mixed feelings. If the Estoril has its own personality, I'd get it immediately. I think your review of this watch is now imperative! ;D

From the sellers perspective: there is always a first watch you sell, most of us will not sell dozens of watches in their lives, so the reputation as you say will never be good. how can i still show i am trustworthy?

Great vid as always Tristano, good info to take on board, may I ask why we never see you wearing the Submariner, I have seen it in your SOTC vids but never on your wrist, is this kept for special occasions only ? Cheers mate.

Useful Video TGV, quick question: You've not mentioned Jomashop for awhile? In the past you've used them, to acquire the Oris Aquis As we all know, but Would you still recommend them today? Last time I used them it was all fine, but this time I'm thinking of spending up to & including $700!! Hamiliton Pioneer & Oris Moonphase. Reviews are a mixed bag TBH, so I just wanted your opinion on the subject? Or is Chrono24 the go to place now? Cheers! All the best. BMJ ENGLAND! ✌🏻️

TGV, have you happened to come across a Tudor Heritage Black Bay Bronze?
@theurbangentry8 жыл бұрын
Not yet, what do you make of it? Thank you, Best regards, TGV
@JgHaverty8 жыл бұрын
The Urban Gentry Ah, I was hoping you'd have handled one. I was thinking about grabbing the Glycine Combat Sub Goldeneye this week, but the Tudor really caught my eye, and obviously I'd have to save up a fair amount more. The all bronze construction is very appealing to me.They also swapped to an in house movement instead of an ETA, which is also appealing. The nearest Tudor dealer is a good 2 hour drive from my location. Might have to make a trip this weekend... Thanks for the response.

I would add to inquire if you are buying online, the method of payment the seller accepts. If you are buying out of country or out of state, many will be wire only, some will be PayPal. If wire only, sometimes you can get a better price, however, be sure as TGV says, that the seller has many positive references, and or preferably the seller is an established reputable grey market online dealer as you have zero protection with wire payments if the watch is not as represented in the add. PayPal, there is protection for the buyer however, you will have to file a complaint and undergo a process there.
