A few years ago I made a video about how G-Shock was the last best hope for an increasingly doomed watch industry, against the ever growing Apple smart watch evil empire. However, there's a new leader of the pack, and in this video I explore how Bulova has gone from strength to strength, offering better value than the Swiss and other Japanese options at this entry level price. Join me for a review of the Bulova Super Seville including its positives and negatives, as it goes head to head with the ubiquitous Apple watch and one of the best G-Shock watches on the market, and find out why together, the Super Seville and G-Shock GBD200-1 hold the key to saving the entire watch industry. What do you think about the watches in this video? What will happen in the future with smart watches? And how would you like to see the traditional watch industry tackle the troubling ascendancy of the Apple watch? Please share in the comments.

So what about the Longines VHP gmt or std or if you like chronograph. Although sadly discontined is far higher performing than the bulova’s movement. They also take a pragmatic approach to WR. The Casio is a belter.

Wearing the GBD200 as I watch this. Out of all my watches, it is by far the one I have worn most. It weighs nothing, is comfortable, very legible, does not require charging, and gives me all the activity data I want from a sports watch. They really knocked it out of the park with this one. It's not the classiest watch, but I have others if I need to suit up. Great video as always, I hope you're enjoying the move to NY!

Do you have a stat to back that up? Because if it's anecdotal, it can go both ways. I went from wearing a traditional watch 100% of the time to maybe 10%. Smartwatches are becoming more and more ubiquitous even in professional settings.

I have no desire to own a smartwatch. I am connected enough with my cell phone. I love traditional time pieces. I love watches, be they automatic, quartz, or solar. But to me, a smartwatch is a wrist phone. It is not something that fills any kind of need in my life. Moreover, they demonstrate no artistic diversity or craftsmanship. In short, they bore me.

@@theurbangentryI can tell you what brought me into it a few years ago. Bought the new Apple Watch Ultra for $900 and thought that was a ridiculous amount to spend on a watch. Was talking to a friend and he brought up how that Ultra would be old news in a few years with subsequent iterations. Got me thinking on the timelessness of mechanical watches that are cared for.

It's not about "needing acess". There's a lot of things we don't need but it's nice to have access to. A smart watch can literally save your life. It can also alert you to a medical condition you're not yet aware of. It call also automatically call emergency services after an accident. A smart watch offers so much more than telling time and viewing and text.

@@USMCPFC1i get your point totally and I do agree with you. But I'll still never own one, unless G-Shock releases one. I liked the hybrid Citizen smartwatches, but I still can't get into them. But I'm someone who basically abandoned ALL social media AND I don't use my phone very much, so that would be like sticking a small phone on my wrist. I'm just glad to see anyone wearing a watch to be 100% honest. The people who say "i can just check my phone" drive me bonkers personally 🤣 My dad gets a new FitBit every couple of years and I've been pushing him to get one of the new G-Shock's that got released in April (don't remember the model number, but it tracks steps and stuff), and it'd be the last watch he EVER needs (he's 77). What i don't get about tracking steps for older people is, what happens when you don't meet your daily goal? NOTHING. And if you've owned one for awhile, you already know about how many steps you do daily. So why keep tracking them at all? It's not like my dad is going to leave the house at 11pm to go walk the neighborhood just because he didn't meet his daily step goal 😂✌️

I want SO BADLY to love Bulova. I've had about 6, and they never seem to last in my collection. Some of them have died due to failed water resistance, some of them just bored me and got sold, and a few were genuine lookers but didn't exactly match my sensibility. I think they're really *close* to shedding that "mall watch" status, and they've improved tremendously. Still, the MSRPs are high-larious if you consider the value proposition they are offering versus the competition. Asking $400+ for a "military field watch" that has 30m water resistance and a Miyota 8 series movement? Yiikesss. There's a sucker born every minute, and they go to the mall all the time IYKWIM.

I started collecting around 2008. As my watchbox has consolidated and individual pieces have grown much more expensive, what hasn't changed is the cheap G-Shock 5610 that I use to set my other watches, to accompany me to the gym, and to wear whenever the neighborhood feels sketchy. It is a true tool. In all honesty, it's the only watch I've ever owned that isn't a piece of jewelry.

All it takes is a hand me down to kindle the love for watches, I had watches as a kid, mostly cheap digital Casio's but there was that day I was dressing for a job interview, a part timer while I was at college at this time my Granddad was staying with us for a while, as I was adjusting my tie he spotted my grotty old Casio "You are not wearing that are you?" I hadn't worn a watch in about a year and it was all I had. He promptly went to his room and came out with a very shiny Gold Tissot Seastar Seven that he had had since the late 60s. It felt like the cherry on the cake from feeling average to a million bucks. It even became a talking point during the interview. I often wondered if my first impression would have been damaged, if I wore that old, dirty, cracked screen Casio (F-87w I think) with the strap a few moments away from ripping that I had for about 10 years.

I believe that quartz watches will ironically be the only hope for the industry to compete. Modern cheap mechanical watches are more fussy to deal with for the average person. They run out of power in 2 days, they are less accurate, more fragile, more expensive to service, and ultimately just as disposable as quartz if not more, as the movements are often simply discarded and fully replaced. Quartz watches are the least fussy and most accurate, and with solar and atomic/radio options they are even more useful. If big brands produce better and more quartz options, more people will want to buy them. The affordable mechanical fad needs to fade a little and let quartz take over. Imagine how awesome a Prospex solar quartz SKX or Turtle would be.

Check! Multiband 6 WaveCeptor? Check! Tough Solar? Check! Love the analog/digital combo and the white dial is so elegant. I think if they had at least a weeks battery life they would be a bigger draw. Until then it’s still niche

@@EvilTwinRC51niche??? Apple sold $ 40 billion in smartwatches last year. And that was a drop from 2022. That's still more than half of the ENTIRE wrist watch industry. If that's niche, traditional watches will be long gone when smartwatches become really popular.

Great video! As someone who’ll probably never be able realistically own a Speedy, Bulova has been on my radar with the Lunar Pilot. Sure it’s quartz and not mechanical but the design is there as is the heritage.

Never understood people's attraction to those "smart" watches. I ask people all the time what they use them for, and after they answer, I immediately point to their phone and just say: "Why not just use your phone", and leave them puzzled. On an aside, I've just purchased my 3rd GShock, the very one in this video GBD-200, because of this video, and I plan on using it to tell me the time and date, NOTHING ELSE! That display is just brilliant!

I feel like Bulova are inching ever closer to a perfect everyday watch - that 262kHz movement is their unique selling point, and refining one of their heritage designs with that movement would eat up some of the affordable competition - the new marine star is close, this new super seville as well, just the proportions are ever so slightly off. Once they make a smaller lunar pilot that fits a majority of wrists, they will have a hero piece to anchor future successes from, at least from watch enthusiasts getting the ball rolling. Having said that I'm happy with their miyota powered watches, when they look as nice as the oceanographer, they just need to use more finishing on their steel as all polished tends to look cheaper (at least to my eye). Definitely making improvements on the mall watches they'd been selling - happy you keep us abreast of each new release from them!

Watches as Jedi knights. I thought I was the only one who had thoughts like that! Loving it. I've never owned a Bulova but they have been on my radar for a while. So far, I haven't seen a design that knocks me to the floor. The vintage one with the day going along the top is certainly a looker, but I don't think they still produce it.

I refurbished a 1977 Super Seville from the ground up a few years back and is still in my collection today. I also own a Mil Ships and an Oceanographer GMT Devil Diver in blue. I was so excited when I saw the new Super Seville on the Canadian Website. However I am disappointed they did not have a day and date complication like the original and 30 meters of water resistance is making me take a pause. However that sweet 262mhz sweeping hand is just brilliant.

I love my G Shock Solar Atomic time. My first one lasted 20 years; it actually still works but the case is cracked, kayaking race accident. Which is why I don’t wear my Seamaster 300 Diver unless I’m ocean kayaking. The watch that lives on my wrist is my Speedmaster 3861.
