So part of this wider story, Shanghai had a pretty sizeable population of Jewish people at the time, mostly refugees. When Japan conquered Shanghai, the Germans basically had to trick Japan into putting the local Jews into a ghetto by referring to them as "anti-nazi" Germans who were also always anti-Japanese and thus likely spies. But then when German officials got increasingly insistent that Japan hand them over, the military governor of Shanghai got curious. He ordered the local jewish community leaders be brought before him, so they would explain to him why the Germans hated them so much, as he didn't really get it. One of the rabbis told the governor that the Germans hated them for being short and dark-haired. The Japanese governor made sure through the rest of the war that the Jews in Shanghai would not be handed over to the Germans.

I think the reason why you see much more black or even gay representation in media outside of sitcoms might be because you can drop a black gay person into a setting like DnD pretty easily, you dont need to change anything about them to fit. But in a world with an entirely different pantheon of deities, which are demonstrably real in that world, it takes a lot more work to drop a jewish coded character, because youre working with an identity defined in large part by its culture and history, in a world where that culture does not exist, unless you worldbuild it into existence, which is a lot of work for just one character.
@Turquerina8 ай бұрын
Holy shit, this is actually so insightful. I've been someone who has greatly struggled with writing Jewish characters into different worlds (when I'm not worldbuilding them) because of religion. It's often so much easier to create Asian or black characters (where you just really need epicanthic folds and straight black hair for your Asians characters, and dark complexion with coily hair for your African characters). Racially coding a Jewish character can be tricky because you may end up perpetuating anti-Semitic stereotypes.
@TheDarkendstar8 ай бұрын
I would agree except its not how many tv shows or fantasy default to using a cross or make any religion Christian coded alot of these fantasy worlds also have other groups of humans who are muslim coded with religions that are in theory also muslim coded.
@aethelflaed68148 ай бұрын
I feel like I’ve broadly seen two kinds of Jewish representation in fantasy media A) Written by non-Jewish authors and either borderline antisemitic or actually antisemitic B) Written by Jewish authors and it goes over the heads of most of the non-Jewish audience. (I don’t think it’s impossible to overcome-jump back a couple decades and pretty much all minority representation in fantasy media was badly stereotypical or downright racist. It just requires more trope awareness than is currently mainstream.)
@TheSpeep8 ай бұрын
@@aethelflaed6814 Yeah I dont think it's impossible, but I imagine its a very tricky line to ride between potentially offensive stereotypes, coding so subtle most people wont pick up on it. I'm Belgian, I dont think I've met a Jewish person in my life, I imagine theres certain historic reasons that may have something to do with that, but I know I wouldnt pick up on the subtler bits of coding or representation.
@TheSpeep8 ай бұрын
@@TheDarkendstar That is fair, but I think a lot of those arent so much intentional attempts at christian/muslim coding so much as they are just a kind of shorthand for the dominant local religion when an author wants that in their setting but doesnt want to bother with detailed worldbuilding of said religion. So vaguely european medieval fantasy setting X just drops in their christian coded church because its what those settings always have, or their muslim coded church for when the characters travel to a desert town for a few chapters/episodes. I dont think its so much a form of actual intentional or good representation as much as its just shorthand for a part of the world the story isnt focused on, almost more tokenization than anything else, really. Admittedly, it is more than what jewish people are often afforded, but I'm not sure I'd consider it actual representation.

In my opinion, the funniest fact about WW2 is that when Hitler killed himself in the Führerbunker, he did so in his personal room. Why is this important? Because that room had a painting of Frederick the Great, a man from German history that Hitler admired. The Führer unknowingly killed himself in the presence of a gay man. I imagine the King smiled when he saw the scene unfold. The day of writing this, April 30th, is actually the 79th anniversary of this event.

A similar misunderstanding thing is with the Spanish conquistadors and El Dorado and such... The Spanish saw natives dropping gold into a super deep lake ritualistically and were like "Wow! They must have like... Like... A whole city of gold to be willing to throw some of it away! We must find the city of gold and loot it!" And meanwhile the Spanish were dumping platinum into the ocean because people in Spain kept using platinum as counterfeit gold since the Spanish just didn't know the value of platinum similar to the natives not knowing the value of gold... But the Spanish just didn't even consider that possibility because they weren't sociologists...

Growing up, all the traits people associate with the Jews are traits my family prized. Growing up, I never understood why they were hated; their associated stereotypes all seemed pretty cool to me. To my understanding, the Jews are well-regarded in East Asia - I've heard someone say that they're the "Asians of white people" or "White Asians." Personally, I relate to a lot of media depicting Jewish family dynamics; some more stereotypical, some more genuine. It's like I'm seeing a bizarro version of my own (grand)parents

@@tomlxyz It's actually both. Looting was EXTREMELY normalized for armies back then, so although looting Christian cities in the holy land posed some cognitive dissonance to the Catholic Church, the soldiers on the ground had been looting Christian cities in Germany for centuries, so they had no problem believing they were fighting for Christ WHILE looting ancient Christian cities. There's no doubt in my mind that some crusaders didn't care about the religious aspect, and that some only cared about the religious aspect without concern for material enrichment, but I think that the majority of them were looking for BOTH material enrichment AND spiritual salvation. The crusades were the first time plenary indulgences were offered in exchange for military service -- killing is a mortal sin, so soldiers who spent their lives killing saw a unique opportunity to save their soul by simply doing what they were already doing.

This is legitimately a plot point of practically all warring kingdom type anime. "There's a monstrously powerful kingdom with people of unrivaled cleverness and strength? It would behoove us to ally ourselves to them." 🤣

No lie, and anime of some of the histories in the old testimony would slap. Any of the kings or judges or prophets would go mad hard.

For me, the funniest WW2 fact is that the invasion of Normandy only succeeded because Hitler was asleep and there was a standing order to never wake him up. They needed Fuhrer approval to divert an army to repel the beach invasion, so they just didn't and the allies managed to land a toe-hold.

It's terrifying thinking about how irrational racial animos in German/Japanese imperialism saved us from their concrete alignment with Russia/China that would have been veeeery tough coalitions to fight. I'm fully convinced that the world of Big Hero 6 is an alt history where Japan does it's imperialism with less brutality and WW2 has a 3 way peace in like 1949.

If the Japanese were not horribly racist against other Asian nations and actually lived up to their rhetoric of co-prosperity, we would just be the western imperialist bad guys in that scenario.

Could go with 3 way cold war world Germany victorious on the continent but unable to invade Britain American Japanese detente (there is just no way japan even stalemates the US so the timeline has to just keep the peace between the two) And so you have the Americans and British on one side of the cold war the americans proping up the british empire as its only ally and the Germans and Japanese who are still kinda friends but with a growing rivalry between them.

The Marvellous Mrs Maisel is an excellent series that, while comedic, still has a ton of jewish (specifically New York jewish) elements, since the main character is at least somewhat observant of the faith.
