The brilliance of this is not the tutorial, is that you figured out how to do this. This is definitely thinking outside the box. I want to know how long it took you to figure out this out. The only thing different for me is, instead of using rotoscoping. After effects I will use magic mask in resolved, and then bring that back into after effects.

Thank you for your kind feedback. I came up with the motion trail effect when I was trying to figure out why the Particle Playground effect was needed, because at first it seemed useless to me :)

That's one of the most impressive uses of the humble old Particle Playground effect I've ever seen, I had no idea it could do that! Is there a technical reason you pre-rendered the trail frames as individual .PSDs instead of maybe a lossless .MOV?

Amazing tutorial! I'm having trouble trying to get new particles to appear in front of previous particles. In your example the subject is travelling away from the camera whereas I'm trying to create a similar effect with the subject approaching the camera and it doesn't look right. Any ideas?

When I did it again today, I accidentally put all the Particle Playground and all subsequent effects on the Character layer instead of on the Motion Trail layer. That's why it works now. In my project, the Motion Trail layer has no effect on the underlying Character layer whatsoever. Does that mean I've got some of my settings wrong?
