This stereotypical belief that Black people and Italians made better labourers because they could withstand certain climate conditions was the excuse used to deny their humanity... it is the same reason that Black women die at such high rates in our medical institutions because there is the belief that we can endure more pain... the reasons Italians were mistreated were they were Catholic... they weren't considered white because they were not Anglo Saxon Protestants... they were darker than other immigrants... so if you were an immigrant the closer you were to what was considered whiteness the better you were treated.
@xKarenWalkerx9 ай бұрын
That's not necessarily true. Jewish people were among (and still are) some of the most vilified and persecuted ethnic minorities in world history. They are white and very often blonde and blue eyed and the avg person wouldn't be able to tell if it's Protestant white or a Jewish person. It's also because they assimilate more than any other minority did. Irish people also did the same blue collar work Italians, blacks, Mexicans did (do). Also Asians can be white skinned and still treated horribly and forced into camps. There is also emerging data that minorities who assimilate more might work against them. It can explain why racism for blacks vs almost none for Mexicans. Blacks do adopt an Anglo culture and religion (Protestantism).

Joy never said JUST Italians were treated poorly, but that they were treated poorly; which in itself is an understatement. That doesn't take away from any other group that has struggled in this country. Instead highlighting the Italian struggle in particular because that was in relation to the topic of conversation. Every group of people that has faced discrimination in one form or another could of course raise their hands and go me too! We were treated poorly also, but there is nothing wrong with speaking of an individual experience in this country.
