"You can sing a song to 85,000 people and they'll sing it back for 85,000 different reasons." -Dave Grohl It's still haunting to me that Dave Grohl recorded the first Foo Fighters album virtually alone, in the same studio Nirvana recorded their last song...carrying the torch...Everlong. RIP Kurt Cobain and Taylor Hawkins.

This presentation was a gift for everyone who knows the original song. You can see that at all times the whole audience is just waiting for the song to "start". There is tension, and there is awe. Usually singers will start a song like that, and then after a verse or two, will fall into the original song. Dave had the insight of teasing everyone during the whole song, and just "release it" at the end, for the finishing chorus. It does not have the same impact for a first time listener of the song, the hook is different (it can still be a strong hook, but different nonetheless). One thing you can say about Dave; his main goal on the stage is to have fun. He knows that if he's having fun, everybody is having fun. Great rendition of his own song.

My first time hearing it was the last show by Dave Letterman … I was totally hooked by the end of it. It apparently meant a lot to Letterman (the heart surgery thing and all). And I can understand why. In some way, to me at least, that version is the definitive one … with the collage video from all Letterman shows and all. Great song. Cheers 🍺

I really enjoy your reactions. Dave Grohl is a national treasure. A talented musician with an incredible career…and awesome stories to go with it. Having to deal with not 1, but 2 intense band tragedies and survive in the music business. I’ve listened to his audio book several times! A father of 3 girls (each of whom you can tell he adores although I’m sure they don’t appreciate his coolness) and still tours with his mom. He is also quite charitable, often cooking in public (BBQ) and giving food away. A true music ambassador and all-around great person.. Times Like These (a few, good emotional, live versions around), The Pretender, Monkey wrench, Learn To Fly, etc… He also does a mean Baker Street cover!

4:08 That's Dave's thing. Just straight good rock and roll, no special effects, no messing with anything, he's not concerned about perfection as he believes rock should be imperfect, he even records/makes everything on an old analog music board from the 70's. He's just all about pure rock and roll. As a side note the first Foo Fighters album there was no band, Dave recorded the vocals and played all the instruments himself and recorded them separately and mixed them together. Not many have done this and it was a huge album he put together the band afterwards, I know Prince did this as well and Prince loved the Foo Fighters and one of Dave's life highlights he said was when Prince called him and asked if he could play a Foo Fighters song during Princes Super Bowl half time show. Prince also allowed Foo Fighters to cover his song Darling Nikki which is rare for Prince to allow anyone to cover his songs.

It would have been awesome to see you realize how differently it was recorded. But everybody loves Dave because he's so great and if you keep watching their live performances, you'll keep smiling. Especially if you watch some of the ones where he brings audience members up to play with them. He does that ALOT.

I never want it to end either! Fortunate enough to see Foo Fighters twice, and I really had a blast! I knew every song they sang, and they also did a lot of covers, which were also great. At the end the audience kept cheering, trying to get the band to return for aother encore, for well over 30 minutes. I listened to all my Foo Fighters music for weeks before coming off that high, that rush, the feeling of emotion they carried the entire audience through. I've been going to concerts since I was 13, and I am now 60. I used to work as a local stagehand for major tours, also concert security, as well as just working for local bands early on in life. Easily top 3 of any concert I have ever seen. Dave Grohl is so great, talented, gets involved with so many other artists and bands, too many to list. Never a dull moment. Its like they set out to make each show the best show you will ever see, and make it so much better than the last. Dave Grohl once accidently fell off stage, broke his leg, and got the crew to get him setup to finish playing a concert in Gottenburg, Sweden. Sheer will power to overcome the pain he must have been going through. He went back after he recovered and did another show for them.

The best thing about seeing the Foo's live is each show is different. Each song is different from the studio. Dave wants everyone involved and feeling like they are part of the band. Always a crazy experience to see them live. You'll laugh almost as much as you sing along. However, it doesn't always make the best reaction because you really don't know what the original sounds like. But this was great. I love the way you understood what the Foo's are all about. The best thing about Dave: He is truly just a normal dude, super famous, pretty much universally liked, a family man first, rocks on vocals, guitar, drums (good god), just a normal dude. Was at the OC Fair back in 05 or 06, I'm old so I can't remember exactly. In line to buy a corn on the cob, and I turn around to look at how long the line is. Well hello Mr. Dave f'ing Grohl is right behind me. I did the whole "Big fan" "blah blah blah" thing and he asked me if I had ever been to a show. I told him of course I had. I've seen the Foo in small joints, medium joints, stadiums. He asked me what was my favorite, I told him the medium joints/arenas. He asked why and I told him that the medium joints/arena are big enough to create a shared joy in the music, but not drown it out. He said "Interesting". Then he asked if I wanted a selfie with him. I told him I left my phone in the car (which I do often) and said it's okay, I don't need a selfie, I have in my possession the greatest camera ever made, my brain, my eyes, my ears.

Dave Grohl is an incredible human being. Besides Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, he has been in a couple of other bands, and played drums on a ton of other peoples music. I see lots of good recommendations here already, but I will second The Pretender, as well as My Hero at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute. Taylor was the drummer for Foo Fighters until he passed away in 2022. This show was a tribute to him, and his son Shane played drums on My Hero. It's a must see.

Great performance by Dave making a stadium show seem intimate but the studio version of this will always be the best.

One of the few songs that makes me so so happy but also somehow gets me in tears every time. It’s like being nostalgic for all the good memories but grieving the bad ones at the same time. And live…like that…I saw them last month and during this song, I just stood there and let it wash over me. Maybe I am overly emotional about this, but to me… this song is perfect. The whole damn album is perfect. February Stars. Hey, Johnny Park! Just 🖤🖤

I love how when one time they didn't perform this in a show on their tour people complained afterwards so much that the next show was all only this song.

No joke, I logged on today to watch this very performance as it always perks me up and here's you reacting to it! Dave is just such a sincere dude who really appreciates the way music connects people. It's how he's able to captivate this massive audience so easily. You can tell he's having a blast and it's exactly how he was both times I saw them live. Highly recommend the official video for The Pretender as your first studio song from these guys. Great song with high quality production and a fantastic video. You can't go wrong though with the Foo's. Finally, anyone who recommends you react to Alter Bridge is smart and attractive and you should listen to them :D

ohh wow... having just newly discovered you, and having grown up with and forever loving these songs, I've watched a few of your analyses of 90s grunge performances, and I have to say that your descriptions are spot on perfect and intriguing. just love your reactions to some of the vocalizations you're hearing, how obviously thrilled and chilled to experience certain segments of a song and their vocals. in particular, in the beginning of this clip, Dave's slow tempo is mesmerizingly dark and deep-meaning, and beautifully conversational. his build-up to the song finish is killer, enticing the crowd into anticipation and closure. this is showmanship, this is art. this is music. well done Dave, and well done Bethany 💯🎶

His tempo, vocalization & instrumentation on this version is so all over the place (I think because he knows how involved the crowd wants to be with his signature song), that I think this might be a tougher version to analyze than others out there. The hardcore album rock version is good, but for my money the acoustic-only rendition he famously did on the Howard Stern radio show is truly mind-blowingly inspired. It was the very first time he ever tried playing it acoustically.

This show meant everything to him, he wrote about it in his book saying it was all he could think about for the six months leading up to it. Dave does have impressive vocals to offer, you'd probably find interest in songs like Best of You, Breakout, or Monkey Wrench. Later on I would try something on the acoustic side of In Your Honor, like On The Mend (specifically live in Hollywood 2006).

This is the song that ends almost every gig . "We don't say goodbye, we say Everlong" And Dave's timing? He's a drummer, and those who've drummed for him will tell you his timing is impeccable. Great all round artist. Listen to some of the more obscure album tracks "Another Round " , "Razor" or " i should have known"

Not sure how long this Wembley show was, but usually The Foo Fighters play for 2.5-3 hours, and this is one of the more gentle tracks to close the gig .. so his already imperfect (by the way, I love the Foo's and Dave Grohl) singing voice has taken a hammering by this time

You've gotta give Queens of the Stone Age a try - "I Appear Missing" would be a great start! Dave Grohl has called them "the best band in the business." He and Joshua Homme (Queens founder/vocalist/multi instrumentalist) are dear friends, and Dave has contributed to many albums and toured with them as their drummer.
