So as a Baby Boomer born in the early 50's this song has always held a special place in my heart but no more so than now hearing Don along with Home Free put a new spin on it and shoot me if you need to but I like it even more now than I did way back when. And young lady let me tell you, I lost it, same time and same place you did. The lyrics are powerful and moving and even when folks have a different interpretation of what they mean to them, I still believe, that real art, whether music or paintings or poetry, can have that effect and can therefore affect people in so many wonderful ways. Thank you for the heartfelt reaction to this Home Free rendition of "American Pie" Christi. It is amazing and brings back a very special memory for me every time I hear this song. I was in the U.S. Navy for a long time, and in 2003, I was on a 9 month deployment to the Pacific region. We pulled into Perth-Freemantle, Australia for 4 days. We go to a bar (go figure) in Freemantle with hundreds of U.S. Sailors and Australians, partying hard. The live band began playing "American Pie", and the entire bar, everyone, began singing. Everyone on every floor and every room of the bar. The band stopped singing, kept playing the music and just sat back and watched it unfold. Played the song twice because of the reaction. It was awesome, a piece of home for the Americans, and all of the Australians knew it, singing along with us at the top of their lungs. I will never forget that moment, and every time I hear this song, I think of how much fun we had that night and how happy we all were to share the moment. It was a wonderful experience. Thank you again for the reaction Christi, and most importantly, thank you Mr. McLean. Your creation is timeless, and brings joy to so many people! Peace everyone!

I had the great fortune to see and hear Don McLean in Jerusalem at the Jerusalem Theatre 1980; great talent. The audience would sing the refrain and then grow quiet with the lyrics they didn't know. One of great memories from serving as a Marine Security Guard 1979 to 1981 in Jerusalem. If you want to appreciate America just go overseas . Both America and Israel are blessed. Hello Christi, I totally agree with Kevin's recommendation that you react to Home Free's cover of "Helplessly Hoping". It is a purely vocal performance without the percussion effects and I find it to be hauntingly beautiful. Like with "American Pie" (and all their covers), they respect and honor the original version but add their amazing artistry to make it special. This is a truly magical song . Not because when it is heard , peoples hearts and minds are instantly flooded with wistful and happy memories of their younger lives . Nor because when this song is heard in a group setting ( particularly a pub or club in my wayward case ) , all types of people , friend and stranger alike will join in singing along together , enthusiastically loud . For 8-odd minutes everyone is a family . The absolute magic of this song is that the lyrics are sad and melancholy , yet the instant the first few bars are heard , people smile and become happy . They also had the opportunity to sing 'Elvira' with the Oak Ridge Boys, and 'Proud To Be An American' with Lee Greenwood + Armed Forces Choir! Gambler cover also worth reacting to. Very special for them. They are truly amazing and it's great to see the 'Old Guard' supporting them and passing the torch; as well as bringing these great songs back to focus for a new generation!! One of their most recent is an achingly beautiful rendition of 'One Voice' with Billy Gilman for Mental Health Awareness Month. 20yrs this year since he released it as a 12yo boy after the tragedy of Columbine (back when school shootings were almost unheard of...), with the voice of an angel; and became the youngest singer to top the Country charts/win awards. Be ready with tissues on that one. I remember when the original came out, and now have a 17yo son, so I bawl my eyes out every time I watch. It's beautiful, though! ❤

I was a M3 in Med School. This song hit me and became a comforting way to deal with loss of innocence, the demands coming. Saw him in concert back then.. Just him and his guitar in blue jeans. This now 50 years later touches even more . Life is interesting. Don's voice is wonderfully mature for this now... The marching band refused to yield is a line that lives with me. That was a masterpiece. The year this came out I was in 7th grade. I was in an all boys music class and of course we could care less about that class at that awkward age. The teacher dissected this song and we all ended up loving music because of this song.

You attachment to the song underscores something that's probably unique to kids who grew up in that time....and I got misty-eyed right along with you at the same time you did. I love Home Free and I love that someone who is clearly more knowledgeable about the technical aspects of singing than I am loves their interpretations of really cool songs. I hafta say that, in many instances, I like their covers more than the originals. The one Home Free song every professional musician or vocal coach needs to listen to is Helplessly Hoping! The harmonies and vocal complexity are unmatched in my opinion! Add to that Chance really shines in Helplessly Hoping! But for a solo from Austin When a Man Loves a Woman is your best bet.

First of all I love your channel. Unlike so many other people who review songs on KZbin, yours seems to be very honest and heartfelt and based on some solid understanding of music arrangements and vocal techniques. I am 63 years old and have been singing since I was in high school the early 70s. I’ve done many a capella arrangements as well as several classical operas and also spent many years as a professional radio broadcaster so this song has special meaning in my life. I didn’t just listen to it on the radio, I played it on the radio. About 15 years ago I got to hear Don McLean seeing this live with nothing but himself and the guitar on stage. Needless to say I was within two rows of the front row. John is certainly a case of the older singer who has done much to maintain a good voice. I really appreciate your review of this and look forward to other reviews in the future.

I just came across your channel yesterday, Jul. 15th, 2022, and when I saw that you did a breakdown on this song I had to watch immediately. I'm a lifelong student of music and I see music very much just as you. I had to watch immediately because I wanted to see you tear up like I did when I first, and every time, I see and listen to this beautiful rendition. Don and Home Free ("The Boys") took us to church.
