I played a modified tabletop grand strategy RPG with friends, and as the DM I then turned the campaign into an SCP warfare scenario. We had banned nukes at the beginning of the game, but when a player did their own research and came to me with 118 asking if he could use it for a one-time nuke, I was impressed enough that I let him go ahead with it. It was deployed as the opening shot of what would become WW3, and I’ll never forget the confusion and panic from the other team as it happened. It’s made 118 hold a special place in my heart ever since.

If you thought, “this seems a bit more modern than most classic SCPs” or “This isn’t the SCP-118 I remember!” then you’d be right! People who read SCP-118 a very long time ago would remember different versions, because this is actually the THIRD SCP-118. The first version was a half-full/half-empty glass of water that made people paranoid or optimistic, and it lasted from 2008 to 2009. The second version was a lava lamp that gave out heart attacks which lasted from 2010 to 2011. Both were downvoted to deletion before this version was created in 2012. This means it’s more of a Series II SCP in a Series I slot. Another instance of something like this is Mr. Fish, SCP-527, which was actually written in 2016, replacing the old SCP-527 which was a destructive letter block.

Like, junior researcher Tim is talking to his colleagues in the cafeteria about the ethics of nuclear testing, and everyone's just staring at him. "Tim, nobody blows up nukes in the ocean for fun. They gather around the bomb on detonation day like humans for the ball drop on New Year's. The little high pitch germ countdown starts... "Fwive! Four! Thwee! Twoo! Owan!" *BOOM* "Weeeeee! Haha! Yay! So fun!" The tiny little germs all scream in delight as they ride the waves of underwater thermonuclear destruction. "Again! Again! Again!" Humans: *INVENT ANTI-MICROBIAL STUFF* SCP-118: "...and I took that personally."
@markfergerson21458 ай бұрын
The author knows their stuff. The “gun” type warhead construction was declassified long ago, but details like a biological mechanism for isotope separation using real oxidation state preferences is very clever, something an organism could plausibly do. It builds nicely on known examples of various organisms known to accrete masses of elements that were previously thought to be due to geological processes as well as e.g. certain plants that accumulate selenium, which plants are commercially grown as a source of the element. It would be very bad for say a Bad Guy nation to learn about this SCP and seed waters near its enemies seaports in order to nuke them with near perfect plausible deniability.
@lancesmith82988 ай бұрын
Honestly this skip is so implausibly dangerous long-term that I Can’t Believe It’s Not Keter. If it blows up near people, everybody dies. If the assembly is ever found, the veil is lifted in a best case scenario, and worst case everybody dies. If somebody gets very lucky and bypasses all the discovery safeguards, everybody dies. The least terrible thing that could happen is if a nuclear power finds the properties, breeds them, and puts them to work on just stockpiling more nukes, instead of sending the Amoeba’s Foot after people or leaving them be. Even just getting picked up and fed in trace amounts by marine biologists has a non-zero chance of putting a Red Zone inside a city block. I absolutely get the point of the skip: nuclear weapons are bad and we should stop making them on the off-chance we extinct ourselves. Still, the one thing that world leaders have that these don’t is trigger discipline.
@pseudotasuki8 ай бұрын
I was expecting the enrichment to simply be an anomalous property of the organisms to identify the isotope before absorbing a Uranium atom.

Something I read about once was that those relatively gigantic deep sea single-celled organisms tend to have a lot of heavy metals in their tissues without adverse effects. Perhaps another clever connection.
@hudsonflores54787 ай бұрын
Honestly there have been people who have individually come up with the way nukes worked and then realized its just a nuke so it is probably difficult to figure out but not too hard for a few smart people. This is unrelated kinda but just something I find interesting is how easy it is to figure out nukes when you know what you are looking for and have enough background knowledge.
@MajinOthinus6 ай бұрын
@@thaumatikA single celled organism has no "tissue"; the term doesn't apply. Regardless of semantics however, heavy metals are primarily poisonous because they tend to disrupt complex protein compounds (like those found in complex multicellular life with diversified tissue) thereby inactivating them and accumulating in the the body. They're relatively benign in regards to singular cells unless of very specific type. In general, complex and simple life has very few things that are dangerous to both (ionizing radiation and DNA and RNA disrupting substances being the prime example). A complex multi cellular organism can deal with most things that would absolutely decimate simple life very easily (just look at alcohol), whereas the vast majority of things that are dangerous for such complex life are things that disrupt the communication and resource exchange between the different specialized parts of the same; which are obviously non applicable for simple life.
