I kinda feel sorry for Mikey, but at least people believing he’s the ‘real’ SCP and him containing his ‘plushy’ friend means he seems to be getting decent care compared to the average D-Class. I feel like the SCP lacking the will to resist might imply that the SCP, if capable of conscious thought or affection, truly cares about him too.

Its acting as an uno-reverse mirror. D-1055 shows no hostility to the SCP, so therefore it doesn't grow in hostile reaction. If anything, D-1055 viewing it as a "protective/warm blanket" instead of the pelt of an XK-class bear would be like putting water over a fire instead of gasoline.

I like those SCP's where the document is formatted in a way to convince you that the skip is something else entirely to fit with the general theme/story being told, and this is a good example, with the misdirection being essential for containing an infohazard like this. I like the tit-for-tat between the O5's at the end there, even if it ends on us learning there is a specific protocol for recruiting mentally-challenged D-class for Keter work. Lucky them I guess. Plus, it's another bear-like SCP. At least it's not the Build-a-Bear one. That one still gives me nightmares.

It puts a nice spin on things. Unlike the stag, its not a world ending force of nature in of itself. It doesn't require ritual sacrifice. It doesn't require inhuman acts. It is almost Euclid, being able to be kept in a box pretty easy. And now it is a lovely example of why the foundation's focus on containment, not destruction, is usually the correct way forward.

It may be cold and cruel, but an orbital intombment is probably the best solution. By indications, the bear can die, we just tend to make it grow too fast by becoming aware of it with hostile intent. Have Mikey go on a 'fun space ride', keep him happy and taking Bugsy with him. He goes up on the spaceship into a space station that's designed specifically for the two of them. Then the O5 council hits the button that nobody else in the project is told about that vents 100% of the air in the space station as fast as possible. Zero new people are aware of the bear's nature, and the bear doesn't get to grow because there's nobody other than Mikey around for at least 100km. For additional safety, have the button also trigger a battery of solid state rockets designed to push the station out of Earth orbit and into intersolar space, to eliminate any chance of unforeseen consequences. Mikey is sacrificed, but we eliminate an XK-class scenario threat. If need be, give Mikey a collar that detonates when the 'vent the air' button is pressed so there's no asphyxiation, just a quick boom.

heartless, but effective. however, as someone else pointed out, a lot of SCP's could be "contained" by just hucking them into space; which, if u believe certain 001 proposals that place SCP's as originating from space, its kind of funny to imagine. eldritch gods from galaxies away send keter-class SCP's to attack the earth and we're just like "no thx bro" and throw it back at them. either way, this is a pretty cool and elaborate way to resolve this SCP. well thought out!

There's a tendency among more dramatic SCPs to focus on the isolated properties of the anomaly itself, rather than how those properties inform its containment. What results may be a perfectly adequate or even exemplary piece of fiction, but one that exists in spite of the Foundation's premise rather than because of it. This SCP _doesn't_ do that. Bravo.

so here's a thought: if the general overall, nonspecific consensus is still that D-class are recruited from death row and the like... how did Mikey end up there? and if they were "recruiting" the mentally challenged as D-class before deciding on this "method of containment," where are they getting these people? sometimes it's the simplest entries that highlight the, uhh, morally grey areas of the Foundation. The thing about this SCP is that theoretically, to stop the necessary execution of 80% of the knowing population that are important, they could expose the document to 100s or 1000s of D-class or maximum security prisoner personnel before sustaining a similar bombardment on the facility. It takes a big heart and a great measure of a kind tolerance. Quite a rewarding job and I don't mean lucratively, I mean spiritually. Good on ya for doing a story that mentions these good people! ☺️

Developmentally disabled may sound harsh, but it isn't patronizing and recognizes a disability, not just a little "challenge" to overcome. A lot of folks may dislike softer terms or "person-first language" when the disability is a part of their identity. I can't speak for everyone of course, and everyone has their own preference; it sort of depends on if a person sees their disability as a part of themselves or as something they don't want to deal with.

@@spacepillow Being Asperger myself, I always hated all the euphemisms and circling around words. If I received actual medical help earlier instead of being bullied at school and received lukewarm nice words from non-therapists until I threw myself at an actual psychologist at 14, I'd probably be living a better life right now.

@@spacepillow It's difficult, because no matter what language you use, you're caught behind the difficult reality that it's an uncomfortable condition that nobody likes to talk about. Every term you invent for it eventually becomes a slur: even "imb-cile" and "id-ot" were once clinical terms invented because traditional words like "fool" were found inappropriate by professionals. I once gave a presentation to a class in front of a board on which I had written dozens of terms like "cr-tin", "mor-n", "ret-rded", "boeotian" and others, all of which I had found in clinical textbooks (hey, remember *_BOOKS?)._* [I only just remembered to go back and c-ns-r the words above, or else Y-uT-be would have pitched a fit over my comment...!]

It feels like Bugsy’s anomalous properties are based on perception. His “true nature” is whatever he is perceived to be. It likely started as some magical kid’s toy that was created out of affection, but quickly went south when the wrong parent started perceiving it as harmful for their child, to which that perception became literal.

As someone who's on the autism spectrum, I always find myself prickling a bit at fictional depictions of autistic people -- with how much work I personally have had to do to push back against misconceptions about the diagnosis (in particular ones caused by pop-culture portrayals), I suppose I worry about a flawed portrayal giving even _more_ people the wrong ideas about autism. Call it a real-life cognitohazard, I guess. At least the SCP Foundation material, well-written as it can be, is a niche enough topic of interest that _that_ particular cognitohazard is more or less contained.
@kyetes.866
@kyetes.866 Жыл бұрын
Yeah the SCP articles, especially older ones, tend to not be great about autism or disability. At *best* it feels gimmicky/tropey and said characters are two-dimensional. For context though this one was written about 12 years ago. Writing quality aside, the in-universe ethics of the Foundation have changed a lot.
@Nitrinoxus
@Nitrinoxus Жыл бұрын
@kyetes.866 I'd certainly _hope_ the Foundation doesn't still use mentally-disabled D-class personnel as quasi-consensual cannon fodder. They've got _plenty_ of ethical issues in the entire D-class setup to begin with, without roping in people who can't comprehend what they're being asked to do. To be clear, I have no problems with SCP articles addressing neurodiversity and mental illness -- I'd honestly _applaud_ ASD representation that's done _properly_ -- but that's really the key: the only way to really do such a portrayal justice is to use first-hand experiences of what it's like to live with that sort of mind, rather than just watching _Rain Man_ with a notepad to hand. Most of the contributors didn't want to put in that amount of work, and I feel like the majority _still_ don't.

Agreed! Maybe some creative liberty could be taken to change the language in this story for instance not saying "suffers from autism". We don't need to be reiterating these gross depictions just because it was in the original story. It's 2024 I think creators can take a second to consider a retelling that isn't harmful.
@Nitrinoxus
@Nitrinoxus Жыл бұрын
@poofetus1407 "Diagnosed with" would be preferable to "suffers from", as a general rule. Implying that neurodivergence is a source of suffering suggests that any deviation from a so-called 'normal' is inherently wrong and must be corrected or suppressed -- but frankly, I've seen enough of how 'normal' people behave to question their judgment on the matter.

Placing it in an orbital containment only means that someone has the potential to accidentally encounter it some time in the future. Sinking it into the ocean might limit the potential for it to be found given how much harder it is to explore and map the ocean but the same problem still exists. My money would be on the ocean since it's at least visually much more limiting and response to the situation is likely faster.
