I wasn't sure where the cicadas came in but I assumed it was a parody commenting on the ridiculousness of family gatherings at religious events. I'm sure most of us can remember going to events where we saw family members for the first time and had no idea who they were but acted like we'd known them for years. We've probably even excused some of their crazy behaviour and found them likeable. The bizarre disgusting rituals I'm guessing are simply a massive exaggeration of what really happens, nonesense rituals and people's willingness to go along with it without stopping to question how retarded and/or dangerous it sound. Catholics believe that communion bread and wine literally turns in to Jesus' blood and body for example. Religious circumcision is a better example, hardly anyone stops to question how messed up it is to mutilate a child's genitals and they aren't aware of the short and long term risks including psychological and sexual damage.

Man, the author of this one had something real bad happen to him at some point, involving cicadas. I can't even begin to guess what it might have been, but it was clearly really bad. In seriousness, I'm not sure about this one. Horrific and unsettling, yes, but it's extreme to the point that it borders on trying too hard. It feels like an attempt to one-up some other gross SCP, rather than being it's own thing. Not to mention the implication of it being so widespread, and the long term effects being so excessive, actually make it hard to suspend disbelief that it could be covered up. EDIT: Just read 3004. The real reason is SCP stories are covered under a "no commercial use allowed" copyright. So fan films given away free are fine, but movies or tv shows that earn money are a no-no. Plus not knowing the real identities of 99% of the writers.

Cicadas are my favorite insects. That’s why I like this SCP. The rituals are creepy and bloody especially the White event and it spreads severe effects on the families. If you think that's creepy SCP 3004 is another cicada SCP, it’s related to SCP 2852. I think there’s one other SCP that’s also related to SCP 3004. SCP 3004 is one of the most terrifying terrifying SCPs, it’s an entity that could easily take control of christianity and cause an XK-class scenario but the good news is that it's neutralized. Or is it.......

I say this as just an honest catch and hope to just bring it to your attention because the narration of these is so high-quality: Slough is only pronounced slowe (like the name Howe or ow) when it's a swamp (or in North America a side channel for water). When dealing with the act of something shedding like described in the narration it's pronounced sluff (like tough) either as a verb or noun.

This was actually the first SCP I was ever exposed to, at a friend’s slumber party via KZbin. I was in middle school, and had never heard of the SCP Foundation before, but this story always stuck with me years after the fact. It wasn’t until I was around 20-ish I realized “that was an SCP story wasn’t it?” and I’ve been obsessed with the series ever since. My favorite SCP is 507 but this one will always have a special place in my heart. Mostly because it gave me nightmares, but it’s a special place nonetheless.
