The only underpinnings I own - Spanx - are a far cry from their counterparts of yesteryear! While I’m grateful for the greater comfort, I admire the femininity, charm and sexiness of some of the items worn by the women who preceded us. There’s also something magical about using items of a bygone era, and I appreciate the superior craftsmanship compared to many of today’s cheap, mass produced items. I watched the Iris Apfel documentary and thought of this when she lamented the loss of craftsmen, artisans and weavers of fine fabrics and other hand crafted goods. Life was simpler, slower, more elegant and gracious then. Of course, I’m romanticizing and idealizing, but restoring a bit of that seems like a good idea.

Thank you for sharing your collection! I left off bras in favor of corsets almost 20 years ago and I would never go back to the days of straps making grooves in my shoulders and horrid shape wear with plastic boning that warps and digs and rolls down. Those antique stays and bodies you have are stunning!

Hi Doris, The 1830's stays you showed were never boned but always corded. They were also worn with a wooden busk in the front channel for support and posture. The busk is missing from your example.

Hi, late as ever, I just found your channel and love it! I just got my first proper corset today (I actually got it on Thursday I think but put it on for the first time today). I have had to wear a proper medical, steel (not boning, more like struts that were bent by a machine and held me in a very specific way, for a year, following a bad horse accident...we were both ok but she rolled over me giving me pelvic avulsions due to the ligaments and tendons being pulled off the pelvic bones) I found today much more comfortable than expected but, I am following the advice from Orchard Corsets as they very kindly, have videos covering everything corset related. Loving your channel Doris!

Great episode, Doris! Question for you - why do you feel that corsets are still so popular in 2022? Personally, I think it’s because as a historical style, they have an element of nostalgia and romance. They’re also extremely flattering to the body. But of course, not the most comfortable garment to wear! I loved hearing about Chanel in the 1920’s and how women liberated themselves from the corset! But they always have a way of coming back into fashion. Keep up the great content!

I wear corsets with steel boning. They are fitted to my body. They feel comfortable and supportive. When people tell me how uncomfortable corsets are it’s usually someone who has never worn one or they’ve only worn a cheap plastic boned corset that wasn’t made for their measurements. Same for bras. I don’t understand how women wear bras that are so uncomfortable. I don’t find my bras uncomfortable. I don’t even feel them when I have them on. But I’m careful about the sizing . Wearing the correct size makes or breaks the comfort for me.

Such a shame there's so much in this video that's just plain wrong. The 1830s stays (and yes, they're stays) are missing the broad wooden busk, and were rarely boned at all. Most of the things you show as corsets aren't. What a shame.

I am Elizabeth Swann, the character in Pirates of the Caribbean, when she is forced to wear a corset and as her potential husband is talking she faints and falls into the sea because it has cut her diaphragm off of oxygen! Lovely for ladies who trained into them but I just soon have no figure at all!
