I’m super for everyone with autism getting tested AND their families. It’s associated with SO many comorbid conditions that can be linked genetically, many of which can be later onset and risky. My son ended up having 5 genetic variants, 2 were maternally inherited, and we discovered we both have pathogenic cancer causing variants-so I’m super greatful we got the testing done. We also know to moniter him to watch for possible complications associated with one variant, so we have a better shot of keeping him healthy and catching it early.

More accurate information is always a good thing! That’s great that you were able to find out so much about your son and what to watch for. We are patently waiting for the results.

You could see the effect of the sleep deprivation, I hope that was a one off day. It's great that she got through the blood draw so well. Many neuro-typical people have great anxiety about it, and just can't do it. I think that also shows how much you try to prepare her for things she may not have experienced before and she trusts you. I loved the argument over Target and Walmart. She has really gotten so good at verbalizing her desires and knows how to insist upon getting what she wants. That's awesome, too.

Im autistic and i refuse to have genetic testing done unless theres an actual reason like i start having symptoms of a genetic condition. but i talked to my doctor and he agrees its not necessary for me and my family as we pretty much know everything that runs in our family already, so its not going to tell us anything we already know. i would never want to be "treated" for being autistic. if there was a way to reduce my autistic traits i wouldnt take it. no way! i love being autistic and being who i am. That being said i do get regular blood work done and do my best to be healthy in a general sense but i dont want or need anything or anyone trying to change how my brain works. however im super proud of you braylee. your parents wanted this done, and although it sucks having blood taken, bright side you got to go out to eat after! so its worth it!

The testing isn’t just autism related stuff, more for being early prepared and watch for things like epilepsy for example. But yes, this testing is not meant to “treat” autism but more for understanding and being prepared for her future. We will always accept Braylee for who she is no matter the diagnosis. The overall goal is to provide supports and whatever it is that she needs to thrive in a world that still lacks awareness and acceptance.

You talked about medical professional having specific training around asd, it has just been introduced in the UK that everybody in a care setting from care homes to medical HAS to now do specific training around asd and ld. It stems from a young man with asd who died in medical care because no-one understood him and his diagnosis it called Oliver McGowan and it's mandatory here now I hope it becomes mandatory there soon too. @@TheWeeFamily I was given adderall for narcolepsy when I was 7 years old and it made me very aggressive. I have always fallen asleep at irregular times for various reasons although limiting caffiene intake helps as do physical exercise and over the counter sleep medications.
