I'm in Southern Washington state and that fog is how my area looks with pure smoke and ash. It really does feel like the world is coming to an end...I work at a dog kennel and we've started taking in dogs in emergency cases for people who are having to evacuate their homes. Pure craziness. There are two channels I enjoy - the first is AUsome Chloe, she is an autistic 9 year old who hosts her own channel, she lives in China, her mom is Filipino and her dad is British and she's a charmer. Second is Princess Aspien, she is an autistic 23 year old from Australia, and she is pure fun and very informative about living with autism.

I came over here a couple of years ago from Fathering Autism after being a long time subscriber there. They are in Long Island NY. The father is a 6th grade teacher and the mother is a nurse who just got her college degree! Like FA, they have been able to find balance with respite and have a plan for their son’s future and in using their platform to foster awareness for people with autism entering the work force when they come of age. They also recently moved to a new house where they have gotten their 14yo boy Nicky into painting sea shells and riding his tricycle.

If Braylee likes to be squeezed, perhaps compression shirts may be beneficial for her although I would worry about pressure on her trachea.
@TheWeeFamily4 жыл бұрын
We may explore into compression shirts. In the past she was always too small (but now she’s finally growing... nonstop it seems). She does have a weighted compression vest that she will wear from time to time

While you were out patting the windows, you missed Braylee waving to you. :) When she wants ice in her food, maybe you could offer her a cup to put it in, while she fixes her food correctly. OR maybe she just likes the noise of the ice maker. Show her how to use it when there is no food out. Just a thought. I love ice. I also love salt. Not like in any food, or in just drinks. I was told by my Doc it's a form of pica. I will eat salt off pretzels until my tongue is raw. As a kid my mom used to yell at me because I would fill my pocket with rock salt and suck on it all day. I chew so much ice, that when out of the country I had to ask the kitchen for a bucket of ice twice a day. When I left the last hotel, a waitress asked me what I did with all the ice. You should have seen her face when I said I eat it.
@TheWeeFamily4 жыл бұрын
We have tried to offer it in a cup but it isn’t part of the routine and what she’s expecting I think. Yeah it can be a form of pica and sometimes even oral sensory seeking. Oh my gosh I bet she was shocked by that!
@Glotglot4 жыл бұрын
@@TheWeeFamily I never thought of the oral sensory seeking. I have also chewed on rubber grapes for hours at a time, chewed the fingers off rubber dolls as a kid. Chewed on the fleshy part of my hands. Left twizzlers out to get tough so I can chew hard on them. Constantly had pen ends in my mouth chewing on them. I got in trouble for having pins, staples, paperclips in my mouth at school. Nowadays I just chew on silicone straws, and food textures are a big deal to me. Hmmm... Thats quite a list! Ive never actually sat and thought about it before.

I’m so glad her AAC is helping her. I know when I started using mine it made my world so different in a very good way. I used to just go quiet when I couldn’t figure out how to say what I needed to which is a problem when you need help! So now I can ask for help and talk about all kinds of things! And I gave myself an Australian accent because it was the one that sounded nicest to my ears I’m team ice 😂 I eat ice because I love the crunch so I fill my water cup with mostly ice and crunch on it all day. I wish my fridge/freezer was the same as yours! My freezer is on the bottom and doesn’t make ice 🧊 so I have to make myself and constantly bending over. Oof, but I love my ice! I am not team socks and sandals tho haha. I would be okay with them but I can’t wear sandals after I broke my foot due to a broken sandal. Ever since that I cannot wear sandals because it’s too scary 😨
@TheWeeFamily4 жыл бұрын
Definitely it has helped her, especially when we can’t exactly tell what specifically she wants, we can prompt her to use her talker and it helps her tell us what she’s wanting to communicate. Sometimes she will say or repeat things verbally even if it isn’t want she’s actually wanting or if she’s not sure so it’s very helpful in those times. She hasn’t really been eating the ice is the thing, it seems more to be routine led. I don’t blame you! It would be hard to get past that.

Hi wee family. Does Braylee eat the ice? Wasn't Rubie getting her new Service Dog the Best! Have Braylee's iron level in her blood checked to make sure she doesn't have an iron deficiency. Low iron levels or other r nutrients in the blood can cause picas, craving/eating/chewing non-food items. These items can be ice, dirt, or even detergent. I had a strong desire to chew ice constantly that ended up being caused by an iron deficiency. Once that was taken care of the cravings for ice disappeared. Weird huh? It could just very well be Braylee's new passion is ice in everything, but it may be worth it to have her blood checked just in case. Again, my cravings were excessive, constantly chewing ice and driving everyone around me crazy.
@TheWeeFamily4 жыл бұрын
with her history of pica we know of iron deficiency being possible. Her pica has really been pretty nonexistent lately with other things and she hasn’t actually been eating the ice as much as she just wants to put it in things as routine. If anything, it may be sensory related to temperature. Blood draws are also so incredibly difficult with her 😞

This may or may not be related, a person I know who has autism has digestive issues and body temperature control issues and will do things to compensate for what is occurring to her. One of the things that are an issue for her is carbs. Maybe Braylee is using ice to counter reflux. Just thought I'd mention it in case there is a reason for her wanting the ice. I also used to know a little girl who had a rare disease and she used to eat frozen cooked fish fingers to sooth her stomach.
