Ted Neely owns this role! I saw the film for the first time when it first came out in 1973. I still watch it every Easter. I’ve seen the live rock musical 3 times with Ted Neeley (70s, 90s, 2000s) and the first 2 times with Carl Anderson in the role of Judas! Ted still performs the musical every fall all over Europe, even in Rome! He’s 80s years old, but still gets pretty close to those high notes. Just before COVID shut everything down in March 2020, the film was rereleased in its original 70 mm form. I went to a vintage theater in downtown Sacramento to see it, because Neely and Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdalene) had a meet and greet before and after the showing. They talked to the audience up on stage for 30 minutes about their experiences making the film in Israel. The film and live shows have had an incredible influence in my life.

Ted Neeley was the understudy for the role of Jesus, in the original Broadway production of this show. In his 70s he was still performing the same role and still blowing away the audiences. The movie was directed by Canadian director Norman Jewison, who died only last week, so your timing is very good. Jewison had a solid, A-list career in Hollywood, with many hit movies since the 1960s, He chose to film "Jesus Christ Superstar" in Israel. Many scenes were shot on and around ancient Roman ruins, adding to the atmosphere of the film, which had weird juxtapositions throughout. For example, the Roman soldiers wielded swords and javelins but also wore U.S. Army steel helmets and carried automatic machine guns, reflecting the sociopolitical parallels between ancient Rome and the U.S. at war in Vietnam. The most recent movie in which I saw Neeley was as one of the dog keepers in Tarantino's "Django Unchained". He was basically a barely seen extra but I like that Tarantino hires actors he has admired.

He came back and got me,took me to Ted's dressing room and then, secretly called my parents. I had told him my name so I guess he looked our phone number up. Anyway,Ted was there with his girlfriend,June Lockhart. They visited with me until suddenly my Dad walked in. Man,I thought I was in big trouble but Ted told him I was fine and Dad didnt wind up whoopin' my butt. We lived in another town near Salt Lake. Clearfield. When we got home,my mom stood there with her arms folded and her nostrils flared, then just went upstairs to their bedroom. .I could almost see the smoke rising from her ears.

As much as I think this is great I do prefer the John Farnham version for a few reasons. 1. It's Live, not a movie version done in a studio. 2. John does not have to resort to falsetto to hit the high notes. 3. The Australian version is more of a rock opera than the movie version so the instrumentation is different (better) and John has more rock rasp in the final parts. 4. I'm biased 🇦🇺 .. I need to have another look at the Ian Gillan version.

I don't care what people say, to me Ted is the best version of this song forever. the passion. sentiment, anger and frustration he puts into this song is unmatched. He isnt showing he can reach the notes, he isnt trying to show how good of a singer he is. He is literally yelling "fine, dad, i'll freaking die!!" and you can feel it. that "nail me to your cross and break me" is simply amazing fucking universal cutting the last note of the song...
