Its for the glory. There's not much prize money involved at all.
@pistonburner6448
@pistonburner6448 9 ай бұрын
Well, for truck mechanics etc. the prize money is meaningful. In addition to the prize money MOST of the money comes from sponsors (of course based mostly on success). So: If you're successful you not only have your racing season funded, if even better you get even better equipment funded and more money on top, then if you're really successful you get top equipment and actually a nice chunk of money...and lots of media income for life basically.
@Obi-J
@Obi-J 9 ай бұрын
True. What the race itself lacks in prize money, successful riders will more than make up for in terms of sponsorship money, plus the marketing and endorsement deals that the prestige of winning at the IoM TT brings them.

I live in the Isle of Man, there is an element of risk watching it. Marshalls and spectators have been taken out before , so it is exciting to watch , and you need to keep your wits about you. I have a favourite tree in one spot , and a lamp post in another , to half hide behind , if they are not already taken. The bikes are a few feet away, which is a great way to watch motorsport. Several years ago, i decided on a very hot sunny day to lie on a beach, instead of watching at the bottom of Bray Hill. A good choice as several spectators were hit by a bike, with many broken arms and legs , where i was going to stand. Everyone knows how dangerous it is , and choose if they want to, to accept the risks. Two good films about it are, `Closer to the Edge` and `Road`

I’ve raced at the TT back in the mid 90s , also known Valentino and have followed his career very closely and I can ASSURE YOU that Man IS an ABSOLUTE LEGEND his reasons for NOT running in the TT were multiple but first and probably foremost would be his contact obligations to his Team . Meaning they DONT let you do anything to dangerous secondly every rider knows that a spill at the Isle is inevitable, especially if you are pushing HARD and to be competitive you have to bring your A GAME + some It would simply put too much risk on his moto gp career and could potentially finish it. So you may ask why not now then as he’s finished Moto GP , well that’s simple 😊 we all get old and our reactions slow down his are STILL way better than most ever will be , but his got a wonderful life a family and MANY responsibilities. So I wouldn’t judge him to harshly. I’m in my 50s and would I rider in the TT competitively now ? No way. I still mess about on track days with mates but that race was always NEXT level and to be honest you have to be brought up on that “track” to know it properly IE born there or ride it year in year out OR you have to be a bit crazy 😝 go watch it one year it’s a fantastic event 🇦🇺

I went through the first 55 years of my life without breaking any bones. I'd played semi-professional football, gone skiing almost every weekend in Canada (where I lived), and occasionally in the Alps, fallen off my 'racing bike'(quite hard a number of times) but just 'scrapes and bruises'. A few years back (I'm 63 now) I was carrying 2 shopping bags full of groceries from the car to the house and I tripped a fell, breaking my kneecap. As I was recovering from that, I stumbled in the middle of the night in my bedroom, fell, and broke 2 ribs. Go figure. I guess I'm getting old. 🙃🙃😎😎

Hey, I'm sorry to hear that. I'm not sure if it's in your case, but the reason most people fall as they get older is that they no longer use their balance. It's a use it or lose it scenario. Do Yoga for 20 mins once per week or practice standing on one leg whilst brushing your teeth, alternate legs of course. It's honestly the main reason why older people fall in life. You have to practice this stuff, when younger we all do things like skateboarding, snowboarding (I still do that) etc, but as people get older they don't use it anymore. I'm in my late 40's ex skateboarder and my Dad had issues with balance recently and he's been working on it in his 70's and it's made a huge difference. People slag Yoga, but don't knock it until you try it. Most MMA fighters and boxers use Yoga nowadays, just use some yoga vids on youtube once per week and it will make a huge difference imo

I think it was Joey Dunlop who quoted about the TT, that "you have a green blur and a grey blur, you try to stay on the grey blur". I also noticed one comment on a TT reaction vid where the commentator stated that they thought "The TT is the closest you can get to Star Wars Pod Racing on Earth". There was also a reactor who mentioned that they thought the TT was where George Lucas got the idea for Pod Racing from. A top Moto GP Rider, rode in a slow exhibition lap of the TT and stated that he was not crazy enough to ride in the TT. Also if memory serves the unofficial theme tune for the TT is "Faster" by Within Temptation. They also have I think Crazy Sundays, where they let anyone loose on the track from the fans/spectators.

There are guys who race at the IOM and in Ireland and have lost limbs (Legs usually) who continue to race with specially made prosthetics. Most of these guys aren't factory racers. They work full time jobs, go into debt in order to keep racing. To quote Steve McQueen from the movie "Le Mans", "Racing is life, everything else is just waiting".

These guys are probably on the bottom rung when it's measured by remuneration. A lot of big sponsors beside the motorbike manufacturers don't want to go anywhere this. John McGuiness, the GOAT of this so far drove himself to the races in a camper.Up until now, I'm not talking about the early pioneers.

I've loved motor bikes and motor bike racing, and riding motor bikes, all my life. 30 years ago, my children (who have families of their own now) said to me: "Daddy, we worry about you when you ride your motor bike." I sold the bike that very day. Wherever you are if you're a biker, please be careful. Wear the brightest gear you can, it's better to feel like a nerd, than to be reduced to a stain on the road surface. Remember an increase in speed is a reduction in time to react. These guys are professionals. Out where you ride, there are bold motor cyclists, and there are old motor cyclists, there are no old bold motor cyclists.

Travis & Suzi One lap is 37 miles with 6 total laps on the TT Course. When I 1st seen this video with others involving TT Races, I thought that these racers are similar to Pod Racers on Tatooine in Star Wars because TT racers need to have quick reflexes on the course. TT Race have categories of sanction races including sidecar race.

I’ve attended many times. The current speed record was beaten this year at Sulby Straight and is 201 mph. Not 236 mph as stated here. That’s the MotoGP record. You have to experience the TT in person to appreciate the speeds on normal roads that is totally phenomenal.

The prize money is minimal. They do it for the prestige, the love of the race. The death toll is much higher now, it stopped for a year or two due to the pandemic, then the year it restarted I think there were 7 deaths. Obviously quite a few people take part every year, so its hardly guaranteed that any one racer will die, but all the same. Dont forget there will be injuries of varying severity in addition to the fatalities. Oh and I should point out that at many points on the lap, people will be watching, sat right on the edge of the rosd, literally inches from the bikes. Its not only the racers who die. The Sideprojects channel has a good video giving a brief overview of the history of the race. Well worth a watch. They also do sidecar races at the TT, which are even crazier. Two man teams on three wheeled asymetrical bikes, one to steer and one to balance the bike so it can corner faster. Driver61's channel has a good video to introduce you to this kind of racing.

I to also have done a ton of things where I could have broken a bone, but the one time I did break a bone, I was going to bed. It can happen at any time. For those of you wondering, short story on how, Well, back when I was younger, my bedroom was 25'x25', (in the basement), and I turned off the lights. When walking to my bed, stepped on something and took a leap forward and landed on my boot, which twisted my foot 180 degrees, then my tibia and fibula broke and my foot relocated next to my knee cap. I snapped many of my tendons, including the achilles tendon. Needless to say, it dosen't take much, just one wrong slip and snap.

The Tourist Trophy (TT) isnt specifically a race, it is a time trial, fastest around the course is the winner, riders are sent off individually at set times and only ever do battle if the guy behind is fast enough to catch the guy in front, they are not racing each other exactly, but the clock.

You mentioned animal running into the road Exactly what happened in 1986....from wikipedia Gene McDonnell died in what has been described as "the most horrific accident ever witnessed at the TT", when a horse was startled by a helicopter at Ballaugh which was taking off to take another rider,Brian Reid to hospital, jumped into the road and collided with McDonnell. Both horse and rider were killed instantly I remember hearing the race commentary at the time.There was a commentary point right at the crash site and the commentator was genuinely shocked,saying "oh my godfathers there's been a horrendous accident"

In the UK we have a liking for sports that are dangerous - jousting, cheese rolling, Atherstone Ball Game, Rugby, cliff jumping, conceivably nettle eating, long distance swimming, cricket, so much of our modern lives is wrapped up in rules and health and safety that it is nice to step away from those restrictions and for a short while you can be a warrior.

13:47 The comment about hitting an animal on the course actually happened in 1986. Rider Gene McDonnell hit a horse at about 140mph after it had been startled by an air ambulance helicopter which was taking the victim of an earlier accident to hospital. The frightened animal jumped a fence right in front of Gene, rider and horse were both killed instantly.

And the same even if they don’t They certainly don’t do it for the money although they deserve far far more than they get

The TT lasts for 2 weeks at the end of May & beginning of June - the 1st week is practise week where the roads are closed from 6pm til 9.30pm. The 2nd week is race week when the roads are closed from 10 or 11am & several classes compete (eg sidecars, supersport, superbikes). People like Conor Cummins will compete in 5 races over the week culminating in the Senior TT on the last day.
