The different character duos/combos sound fun, stacking global modifiers (Tree Spawn, High luck characters, enemies) Or just, Streamer, where you each take turns standing still for money/protecting the other

Co-op upgrade i would consider. Toolbox slot. Drop any item, or weapon into the toolbox, lets your allies buy your toolbox item at cost and you get 80% of that cost back yourself.
