The beanie guy, Avi Kaplan, has a natural deep voice. Avi's classified as a basso-profundo (exceptionally low vocal range) in musical terms. He has said he had to learn to speak in a higher voice so people could understand him. He has increased both his low and higher range over the years. In Pentatonix early years, he was known for inadvertently blowing out venue's speakers. Here's one video of him doing that. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5arg6KhjreJo9U Please check out his solo stuff too.

The three in the back are left to right Mitch Grassi, Scott Hoying and Kirstin Maldonado. They are friends who grew up together and have performed in musical theater for years they are also basically referred to as the trio, the group started with them. Scott is also a really good pianist. They needed a bass so they added Avi Kaplan, front left with the beanie and chain. He left the group in 2017 on good terms (they are all great friends with each other still) and has his own solo career and is doing well. He is classically trained and is co founder of the Acapella Academy and also plays guitar. The beat boxer is Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-lu-sha-la), front right, he is a classically trained cello player as well and also plays sax and I'm not sure what else. They all have solo EPs and albums as well, as they each explore their own separate projects. Scott and MItch have a separate side project called Superfruit. They are quite the interesting group.

As long as you love me/Wide awake is sick. It is basically from their couch series. They got dumped by their label so they sat on the couch, Recorded and posted songs a d made it happen. You mentioned something about can Kevin (beatboxer) rap? Kevin is a superhero. He was planning to start med school when he was asked to join PTX. Hooray for the advisor who told him to follow this dream, as med school will always be there. Kevin is so damn good he can rap in English AND Mandarin (Chinese) he drops a pretty good beat in As long as you love me, and then takes off with it. Kevin has a phenomenal ear, and is skilled in music theory, writing composition, beat boxing/percussion, rap, plays saxophone, phenomenal cellist, piano, and since with PTX has really stepped up his singing (tenor) and has amazing control of his falsetto. Avi- basso profundos are not common. And a well trained one even less. Avi came to the group no aca slouch. His acapella group in jr college was the first jr college to win ICCA's (college level acapella competition throughout the US, the holy grail for most) Matt, new bass, is great and brings many things, but just hearing Avi noodle around is videos...wow. Matt was a cool story. He talks about how in his senior year of high school, his HS acapella group was in a competition that PTX headlined, and he got to sit and watch them perform. He then went on to attend Berklee College of Music, One of the more prestigious music schools in the US. He was in their premier acapella group, Pitch Slapped, and president of the group his senior year. The acapella community is pretty small at that level. If you got the goods, someone is watching.

As others have said Avi "Ah-vee" is what is called a basso-profundo which means he naturally has a really really deep voice. He majored in opera in college. He can also do overtone singing and has a large vocal range. Mitch on the other hand is a counter-tenor which means he has a really really high voice. Mitch can sing notes that most women can't reach.

That's Mitch, Scott and Kirstin in the back row, who have been singing together since High School. They brought in Avi (Basso Profundo in the beanie) and Kevin (Beatbox) to preform in and win a major singing competition in 2011.
@bill.godwin-austen4 жыл бұрын
The three in the back row are "The Trio": Mitch (Tenor/Countertenor) Noted for his high notes, but also has a great lower register that has been featured a bit in some of their more recent songs. Also solid on rap. ("Can't Hold Us", "Problem", and the live version of "Can't Sleep Love" where he does the rap verse that Tink did in the video version) Scott (Baritone/Bass when the actual bass is soloing) was the driving force putting the group together back in 2011 for "The Sing-Off", a TV acapella vocal competition where they won season 3. Kirstin (Mezzo Soprano) Also goes by "Kirstie", especially in their early days. She's probably shown the most growth of the group as she's gained confidence and experience (a stint on Broadway didn't hurt). Has always been excellent with the backing vocals (her high harmonies with Mitch are legendary) The two in the front row were added when they were putting together the group for "The Sing-Off" Avi (Bass) The original bass with PTX, has an epic low range and a beautiful overall singing voice. Was found through a friend of Scott's in college. Left after their 2017 tour because the constant touring didn't allow him to spend time with family, and his mother had just been diagnosed with cancer. He helped recruit Matt, who became the new bass starting with the 2017 Christmas tour. Kevin (Beatbox, Cello, Tenor) Scott found him via a viral video on KZbin where he was doing his "Celloboxing" (playing the cello and beatboxing simultaneously) and knew he was the perfect final piece to the puzzle. Kevin can also rap a little, he did a rap verse in their original song "Sing", and has done some in his solo work.

Hey Bayo....going to help you with a little bit of history The Trio (Scott, Mitch & Kirstie) have been best friends since they were 9-10 years old and sang glee in High School. Shortly after graduation, Scott wanted to go on the TV. Show (Sing Off, an Acapella competition) and asked Kirstie (at college in Oklahoma) and Mitch agree to join them. A friend, Ben Bram, has been with them as the "so-called" 6th Pentatonix since helps them in the collaboration of all of their arrangements (btw, no autotune, it's them 100%; also do not record covers that they can't sing live!!). He also recommended Avi (a bass, trained in Opera) to join them and said a beatboxer would make them complete. So, Scott found Kevin on the internet with a viral video of him playing Cello and beatboxing at the same time. BTW, Kevin was classically trained on the Cello and appeared at Carnegie Hall...he graduated Yale and was accepted to their medical school, but accepted the challenge to join Pentatonix (additionally, he plays 4-5 other instruments and speaks a couple languages, including Mandarin). Avi and Kevin joined the Group the day before their appearance on the show and the rest is history. After nearly 7 years with Pentatonix, Avi left for personal reasons (stress of their travel schedule and family illness...he was replaced in late 2017 by Matt, but remains very good friends with the Group). Note - that all of them (except Matt to date) have their own KZbin channels and have separate careers, but all will continue as Pentatonix. Recommendations... ** Scott & Mitch (both gay with partners) have a channel called "Super Fruit". But check out Mitch live with "Aha Singapore", "Gold", "Problem" (some rap) ** Avi Kaplan has his own separate career - check out "Change on the Rise" and "Standing By", which he does live with Pentatonix (2016 concert...San Diego?) ** Kirstie Maldonano has done Broadway, and has sung Disney songs ("Let it Go") ** Kevin Olusalo (the musical genius of the Group) has his channel...check out his rendition of "Down" ** Group songs to follow up on "Wizard of AHHS" (fun); "Imagine" and "Shallow" (a bit of drama); "Bohemian Rhapsody" (classic); "Evolution of series" (start with Michael Jackson). After that, just throw a dart on their catalog of songs (lol) Enjoy the journey !!

I think you would LOVE New Rules. It is more recent. They are very tight and the new guy who replaced Avi, named Matt is in it.

I see its been mentioned here, but I really have to endorse you checking out Feeling Myself by Superfruit. Superfruit is a side project/vlog by Mitch and Scott (in this video, back row left and center) which was mostly for fun. Feeling Myself is just a standalone video on their channel but it rocks. Also their videos of Hip Hop goes Broadway are hilarious!

2011 they were 19 (Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch) Kevin and Avi were barely in their 20’s. 2013 they were still so young!!!!

They did the stripped down videos for years. KZbin got them to where they are today. You need to definitely hear Gold. Just sitting around on couches singing. Feelin' Myself by Superfruit is awesome (Superfruit is Mitch, guy with high voice and Scott, the blonde)

Avi, the bass with the beanie on, was the original bass for PTX, and left on good terms in 2017 for family and personal reasons even helping find Matt, his replacement. If you think he's impressive here, he can also do Overtone singing, singing 2 notes simultaneously, one bass line and a whistle tone. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJqZYpKAg8iShMU is a live video of him demonstrating it, and also an adorable story from Scott about how he joined the band.

Love your honest reactions. I'm a huge Avi Kaplan fan (the bass) He and Keven produce the rhythm section and were once dubbed the "Meat & Potatoes of PTX by one of the judges on Sing Off (which they won) Avi (pronounced R V) is a classically trained Basso Profundo (exceptionally low voice) he has been known to blow out speakers during shows when he hits those killer low notes. lol He does a remarkable effect with his 'over tones' (singing two notes at once)

The names from Left to Right: Mitch, Scott, Kirsten( Kirstie), Avi and Kevin. But Avi has been replaced by Matt since Avi left pentatonix xx

This was when they were still not quite the sensation they were to soon become. The couch is iconic to their earlier videos nd also the setup for this one, which just shows their talent!

Drop the Mic: PTX vs Bell Biv Devoe. That was just after Avi (the bass left), so it was only the 4 of them: Scott, Mitch, Kirstin & Kevin.

Avi is the bass singer with the beanie. That's his voice. In fact, its a little higher in this than usual. Unreal richness and depth. You should react to his song titled Change on the Rise

There are examples of Avi (the bass) breaking speakers when he goes low. If you want to hear him singing deep, listen to Avi Kaplan and Peter Hollens, Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair, or Avi Kaplan with another a capella band, Home Free, doing Ring of Fire (although Home Free's bass, Tim Foust, goes even deeper).

After winning the tv competition show The Sing-Off, they lost the record contract that was part of their winnings when Sony dropped them just a month after winning (no faith that an acapella group could sell albums). So, they decided to use KZbin to maintain and expand their fan base from the show and were wildly successful with videos just like this one-performances recorded live at home with increasingly better cameras and audio equipment, until finally they were able to use a studio space to film in (those have a black background). IIRC, the first video recorded in the studio was The Evolution of Music, which ended up being their first video to go over 100 million views. I am sure Sony were kicking themselves to see that all of PTX’s albums have charted in the top 15 of Billboard’s charts!

1. They introduce each other through the words. 2. Avi - the bass - goes deeper... That's just below his mid-bass. He also tickles tenor and almost soprano occasionally.

This is PTX raw. Kevin, the beatboxer raps near the end of their original song called "Sing". Check out Avi Kaplan's solo video called "Change On The Rise."
