Dumbledore letting the kids sing the school anthem however they wanted was (in my opinion) an important detail that they left out. it gives you the idea of what kind of wizard/headmaster dumbledore was. their magical education hasn't even begun yet, and he's already encouraging the kids to be creative. also, singing the school anthem in your own tune made the anthem a bit more personal to the students. a good way to build some early school pride.

There’s so many great details and subtext that truly help the audience understand why all witches and wizards who interact with dumbeldore respect and admire him and follow him, because he’s a great headmaster, and a great wizard :)) the movies, despite the great acting, still loses a bit of his more whimsical and warm hearted ways that cement why the characters and we as readers SHOULD root for dumbeldore.

I have read the books, and listened to the audiobooks so very many times. I have been listening to them again over the last week or so (decreases my stress levels; wish I had known about your free link, but such is life). All that extraneous stuff said, it never occurred to me, that with all the other distracting changes between the books and the movies, with the changes in who said what, and ‘that isn’t how it is in the book’, I don’t think I ever realized, or noticed, that Peeves isn’t in the movies. And, you are right. Peeves is integral to all the books!

The fantastic Rik Mayall was cast and filmed as Peeves, but unfortunately, all his scenes were cut from the final edit. It can't be because he didn't do a great job, so I'm guessing he was cut for time, or to prevent too much confusion for non-book-reading audiences (only Sir Nicholas out of the 4 house ghosts made any kind of appearance during the early films, and his story was trimmed down drastically). The film-makers were kind of notorious for doing this. When OotP went into filming, the script editors completely cut out Kreacher from the story - Deathly Hallows hadn't been published yet - and Rowling had to put down her foot and told them to keep him in because he would be important later.

Honestly, I read all the books twice before I saw the movie pertaining to each book. I read them once to myself and then to my daughter who was relatively young at the time. I didn't pick up the first book until just before the 3rd book was released. I was on maternity leave hearing all the hype and controversy. I figured one day my kids might want to read these books, and so I should know what they were about. Shockingly, I'm a bigger Potter fan than either of my kids, and neither have read the books themselves. I've also listened to the books at least twice and possibly 3 times and have seen the movies at least that many, probably more. Having said that, I think each version, the books vs. the movies, brings something to the table. The only thing that ever disappointed me in the movies was the portrayal, or lack thereof, of Harry's prolonged and desperate grief when Serius dies in the books. But this is something you won't get to until much later. I feel the rest of the changes were relatively inconsequential given the age of the actors in the beginning and the length of the movie in the end. The movies still portray the essence of the story line.

As one who have read the Harry Potter Books; we never get a full introduction of the Hufflepuff ghost; but I don't see much difference between the two Nearly Headless Nick(s) or "Deathly Hallows" Helena Ravenclaw(s) the grey lady(s) and the Moaning Myrtle character is every bit as flighty and full of character in the movies as she was in the books. The Hogwarts song from "The Goblet Of Fire" book wasn't cut out completely in the Year 4 film, we hear Hagrid and Hermione sing the first 2 or 3 lines of its reprise just before Harry discovers a dead Barty Crouch Sr. in the Forbidden Forest. It was actually the Sorting Hat song about the Hogwarts Houses that was being sung in the first book. There is a different sorting hat song each Hogwarts year through the literary timeline, we just don't get much of the theme out of the movies.

Apparently Voldemort was not sucking Quirrell's brain when Harry first met him in the Leaky Cauldron, no scar pain. What falls apart for me is the whole 'Snape is a bad guy' business after the trio find out he helped harry survive at the Quidditch match and after Quirrell's dialog at the end of Vol. 1. That type of news usually alters a person's mindset, yet Harry becomes more entrenched.

because in the book snape is cruel and abusive to all students who are not slythering. and especially vile to harry and neville. which explains why harry believes snape to be a bad guy even after learning he tried to save him. in the book when dumbledore tells harry that snape indeed hates him because of his father and saved him so he wasn´t in james´debt anymore and could go back and hate him in piece again. harry is dumbfounded how weird snape is because of that. and year after year snape continues to delight in belittleing and tormenting harry every opportunity he gets. in the movies snapes behaves very differently

Hey Gibby, I love the videos for both HP & LotR! I was wondering if it might be worth experimenting with replaying the footage from the movies in slow motion, or kind-of slow motion. It would give the videos more of a reflective quality, and allow for viewers to soak in details of the footage in relation to your voiceover. Also, it would prevent you from having to replay the same clips like a dozen times over the course of the video. Either way, just an idea. I love the channel concept and videos regardless! 🧙🏻‍♂🪄🧝🏻‍♂🧌👻

A great deal of the changes could be explained with run time. Time is king in a movie. Also, things that work in a book, don't work in a movie. I was rather confused with the differences of the ghosts, but being that they weren't my faves in the book, no big deal. As far as Peeves is concerned, good riddance to bad rubbish. He was by far both my son's and my LEAST favourite character! Again, the cost of creating such a C.G. based character would have been considerable and would have also added considerable run time to the movie. Five minutes here and there DOES add up quickly. One thing that was consistent about the books was that Harry's hair was described as, "Just all over the place," Which drove both of the Mother figures in his life nutz! Giving the actor a buzz-cut and a wig would have solved the issue. Other than that, I was fine with the changes... Well... I did wonder how the Hell Trevor got onto the landing in front of Mc Gonnegal. Well, magic, of course. In conclusion, I really enjoyed the first two movies. I was considerably disappointed that the entire feel of the movies were changed afterwards.

Agreed, but I think it’s partly what the director thinks fans want in it. Because despite their starting at 3 hours, Peter Jackson virtually crammed everything into Lord of the Rings! I know personally that if I tried to read it I would have given up because of so much detail of places, various types of characters (humans, dwarves, elves just to name a few) & I’d be too confused to finish the book. I think the changes between the scenes are not critical. Yes, the songs of the Hat are out, but non-book readers would not miss anything. Peeves being cut is the only thing that's critical, but the characterization of Ghosts don't really matter for the overall plot throughout series as neither Nick, Baron or Friar had big impact on the stor and characters. Peeves and Grey Lady are the only important Ghosts to the story and her role was revealed only by the end of the story, which is way after this movie's release. As to why Hagrid didn't lead the students straight to McGonagal mainly comes to the locations of Hogwarts, which are WAY different in the castle layout between the media. Hell, even throughout the movies Hogwarts changes many times, and trsut me, I can go on on movie Hogwarts all day. Anyways, knowing the layout, Hagrid probably just left students by the main door and said to them to just go up the stairs, which led them straight to McGonnagal, who already waited in the room adjacent to the Great Hall.

while i agree that many of the changes to the scenes weren't so bad that they completely changed the story (like some did in the later movies), I would say that the harry potter series of books is all about the world building and details. J.K.Rowling did a lot of good work in fleshing out the world. they had their own music (A Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love), mannerisms, holidays and events (like the headless hunt, and Nearly Headless Nick's deathday celebration.), they had a whole history of things from the goblin rebellion, to the house ghosts having their own history. Whole side plots were removed from the story, like S.P.E.W, and Winky the house elf, and sirius black sending harry a firebolt he strategically acquired, and sending Ron pigwidgeon who was holding a permission slip for harry, so he could go to hogsmeade (giving ron the owl because he was technically responsible for ron losing his rat). We lost out on the love story between harry and Ginny (we were given that god aweful shoe tying scene that made us think ginny was about to give him the tentacular tickle). even more annoyingly, we didn't get to hear luna give her quidditch commentary (Loser's Lurgey, eh?). you tug 1 thread, and the rest of the sweater comes apart. No winky means no trip to the kitchens. No winky means no S.P.E.W, which means no hermione learning to knit hats, and no harassing people to join spew. No spew means harry doesn't get to appreciate the large statue of the elf/mermaid/centaur looking up at a wizard with adoration. which means harry doesn't empty all the galleons he had on him into the fountain (the donations to the fountain were sent to saint mungo's hospital for magical maladies) When you get rid of the details (even the minor ones), you get rid of the personality.

I am not much of a reader (too time consuming): but I am a fan of the movies: nonetheless, internet wise I pick up other information in regards to the book series as well. And if they would have done the movies in a close proximity of the books, perhaps the movies would have been more interesting?

It’s one of the omissions that was wrong. In Order of the Phoenix, after Fred & George make their escape from the castle after suffering Umbridge’s sadistic punishments, Fred says “Give her hell from us, Peeves” and from then on is a list of all the chaos and mayhem Peeves caused because he hated her just as much as the staff and students did

It always made/makes me crazy when an author has best selling books world wide, and the fans LOVE what that person created, so the movie people have to change things around because they can't compete with the "perfection" of the book(s). JKR is brilliant. There are so many nuances in the Potter series that the movie people should have made each book into two or three movies to get it all in. I also think the story wasn't respected as actually plotted literature, but treated, instead, as a kids' cartoon, until far too far into the series. Then there is the "Nigel" problem with the movies.... They cut out all sorts of good supporting characters from the books, then for no good reason invent Nigel and insert him into Colin Creevey's place.... Or the way Prisoner of Azkaban is turned in a Dia Del Muerte fest... Grrrrr!!!

Minor issues, IMO. Remember that when they make a movie, there are times and budget constraints, as well as a limit to how long a movie can be. After all, they did break HP7 into 2 separate movies. And I also think that some of the solutions they had found for the movies, especially later in the series, work better than in the books (and my all Potter Heads forgive me for this blasphemy...)

What pissed me off, perhaps especially as an autistic, was the changing castle and grounds between films. Like with some changes from books which aren't necessary, I could say its artistic license and such. But being such a success from the first, I can only understand if in the second they were amending for future or ideal sets/aesthetic or logistics. But since there was no apparent reason, it should have all stayed put from the get go. I don't see why peeves would have made a difference to add and he wouldn't need to appear after the first introduction; could also divert around it as mentioning of peeves. I also think the Knight should have actually done his shenanigans and help find trilauneys room if I remember right, but nowadays I don't see harm adding him. They'd have made a mint if they'd have continued that multi disc thing like in the old days for a drastically extended version with all this. I think the Wensley brothers friends should have also been seen collecting Hagrids dragon, and if I'm correlating right, linked it with the dragon in the triwizard games-maybe it wasn't that dragon? :s Norbert, that's his name. Maybe perhaps also more insight into the malfoy dynamic too, perhaps a spin off :s :o

The title is misleading. The title makes it seem that you are going to show a deleted scene rather than talk about stuff we already know. Putting a proper title stops people from wasting time if this is not the content they are looking for.

I'm glad t see someone else who dislikes changes from books to movies. Of course it's necessary to omit some details due to time constraints, what trully pisses me off is when they change the locations and plots radically. I first got offended by PRISONER OF AZKABAN changes, although they were relatively light compared to later. GOBLET OF FIRE really went off the deep end, and it was truly downhill from there. Too bad that Richard Harris had to up and die (in real life), but Iam McKellen became a MEAN, angry Dumbledore, definitely not the Dumbledore portrayed in the books. BUT - the worst, most egregious changes were in the last two movies - WHY put the Weasley's house out in the middle of a swampy mess? And the battle between Harry and Voldemort - what a BS, Hollywoodish gratuitous violence! And talk about omissions - the whole wand thing - the twin cores, Harry's gaining ownership of the Death stick, etc. I threw those DVDs away. Garbage!

Snape is wayyyy too old. In the book he was the same age as Lily, James and the Marauders. Lily and James died at 21 when Harry was 1. This would have made them around 31 now. Whereas Snape in the movie is over 50 probably closer to 60. This does not work.

First video I've come across, really enjoyed it. My daughter was the Potter fan not me, but maybe it's time I had a go at them... I wasn't exactly the target audience at the time, however I did enjoy Percy Jackson (but I'm a lover of Greek myths)... I'm fortunate to have been gifted a Kindle so on the basis of this and other videos that I will check I think it's time to dip into the Potter verse. 🤔🤭🕰️⌚⏰. Like many I do wish the author would step away from social media and the spotlight and just let the books speak for themselves. I have seen almost all the films, care of my daughter - but after this video no wonder things often didn't make sense 🤔.

@factorfantasyweekly
@factorfantasyweekly 5 ай бұрын
Great question! Sorry I didn’t explain it further here, but Peeves is a poltergeist, which the books differentiate from a regular ghost. He has a physical form, unlike the ghosts, but can become invisible or phantom-like at will. He’s essentially a prankster who wreaks havoc on the school by messing with the staff and students. He’s extremely loud and obnoxious. 😂 But he is in almost every single book and is quite an essential character to leave out.
@TheWanderingFire
@TheWanderingFire 5 ай бұрын
To follow up Gibby's explanation, a poltergeist is not a ghost (which is a spirit of a deceased person), but is a manifestation that haunts a certain place, and is generated by the presence of things in that location. In the case of Hogwarts, Peeves is created and sustained by the mischievous energy of the students themselves, which accounts for his love of pranks and boobytraps, and his respect for the Weasley twins (two of the biggest troublemakers in the school).
@TheWanderingFire
@TheWanderingFire 5 ай бұрын
I have also heard it theorized (but I don't think it's ever been suggested or even acknowledged by Rowling) that Mr Filtch & Mrs Norris are not a squib and his cat, but another poltergeist, this one unintentionally generated by the staff at Hogwarts (who enforce rules and punish rule-breaking). Filtch as the Order to Peeves' Chaos.

I notice you spend a lot of time talking about things that are important to the story in later books and is early development, however iirc the movies started coming out before the books are finished coming out, so many of these moments the writers and directors of the movie aren’t aware of how important exactly they are so they decide to cut a lot of “unimportant fluff” as I’m sure they’d put it

*Summoning Demons* "An Excerpt for Joining the Forces of Good" A spirit, person, or animal that is trapped or running out of time has little regard for the truth. This is the nature of demonic forces. Though a spirit is more intelligent than a human, and, thus, usually greater than a person, they have a tendency to become angry because of this. It is the nature of an overall hierarchy to drive down the lesser being for their errors. This is intrinsically written into the nature of the universe and of intelligence. Therefore, calling upon an angelic force is much more difficult to achieve in a spirit, human, or animal, but its rewards would be a higher understanding. A demonic force has a tendency for coitus or violence because that is the overall truth of the nature of the body.Earthly matter is below living material in the overall hierarchy, though it has a consciousness, therefore it reveals less than the Intellectual mind in the unseen. This is why physics is judged a lesser science than religion or Occult. Keep your eyes on the prize. We all overcome.
