Based on interviews and things they’ve said, I think the timeline kind of went like this: at the beginning of her career they agreed to do a documentary, and they had no idea she would blow up to such an extent, so the documentary really follows her genuinely being at the cusp of going from fame to super stardom, basically. She’s said in the past that she got so used to the camera she didn’t even register it, really. So I don’t think she really realised that her private life was also being documented, so to speak. She did in fact never say anything about her exes online. As other commenters have said, in the documentary that ex is also there. She’s said in an interview about the documentary that it was hard for her to watch and that she had to stop and walk around and pull up her pants etc. which of course means she had actually kind of moved on but the documentary made her think about her experiences once again, and from a more objective perspective, which kind of vindicated and affirmed her subjective experience that she likely had minimised before (because it’s embarrassing and we often minimise abuse as victims of such). Its very clear to me, although she hasn’t said so, that her album gappier than ever, not only this song, was her processing things from the time of the documentary, especially since the information is already out there, so she might as well address it in her own art. I also think that it helped her to address it and process it for the very reason that she could do so based on a format that feels almost apart from herself, like she’s writing about a character. That’s a context she thrives in, and has said that she does. I genuinely think that the album happier than ever was her creative procession of her reaction to the documentary and what she had experienced years earlier. So this song isn’t her being like “okay now you’ve done it now I am feeling these things so strongly that I will talk about you after all”, but “I would have taken that shit to my grave because it’s embarrassing but since it’s already known now let me own it and talk about it on my own condition”.

Noo I love that Billie adds the black at the end of her videos. She's the only one who does it but I respect it because the stupid KZbin recommendations pop up at the end of every video and RUIN the last 5 seconds of every music video, except hers

Yes please watch the doc the world's alittle blurry! Q was like 25 and Billie was only 15 I believe!!! So I'm suuuuuuure he got mega hate. Watch the doc. It's not only about the relationship but how Billie and finneas made their music the first album in his bedroom and showed right from when ocean eyes came out when she was 13 and the journey of her touring and success. It's long but very interesting!!

The documentary is great. Brandon or “Q” is in the documentary since they were in a relationship. If you watch the documentary, you will see a lot that happens that pretty much aligns with a lot of the lyrics in the song.

Billie leaves 22 seconds on the end of her videos to avoid pop ups of the next video on top of the end of hers!

Terell, it's nice that you look for the meaning of the lyrics, but I hope you didn't miss out on the significance of this change up for Billie musically - this was two songs in one - the first 2:29 seconds was like the Billie we're accustomed to but the 2nd 2:29 seconds are Billie rockin' out - I would make note of those things; Musically, they're important; she had never sung like that before - the intensity, volume, the screams and Finneas's production - I believe noting those things is an indication that YOU ARE HEARING not just lyrics and a narrative, but THE MELODIES, the PRODUCTION, Billie and Finneas doing something new and different and while you might hear it - I don't know if you do or if it's important to you - if that's not important to you, you could forget the music and the video and just look GENIUS LYRICS for "Happier Than Ever" and interpret as you see fit - what's happening in the MUSIC, melodies, harmonies, production is important also - I have a feeling you know and believe that, but you don't mention those things. Billie's performance of this song at the Grammys [leaving out the curse words] brought the house down - 2022 P.S. Billie told her fans not to go after Q, Brandon - there is no way she would have wanted anybody to act that way.

This is genuinely the song I have on loop because when the drum kicks in feels like it’s physically hitting ur body which is a really cool feeling because you it’s really hard to achieve that punchyness with drugs

Billie puts the black screen at the end of her videos so if you get an ad it will go at the end and not in the middle of the video

Happier than ever is about her ex boyfriend Q and he was 22 and she was 16 and he groomed her and in her DOC he drove home under the influence and just never made time for her 😢

Q is 5 years and 4 months older than Billie. They met when she was already closer to her 18th birthday. The relationship at 16 was a groomer but it was not Q. She liked Q as shown in the documentary when Q was ignoring her. That was at Coachella when she dumped him right in the middle of that festival. In the documentary you can see her throwing how iPhone down. In Q's defense, he later came out with some details. He was dealing with the death of his brother, with whom he was close. Alcohol did not help. Q was completely conflicted, could not handle both the death and the media attention. He was barely able to hold it together at Coachella. Finally he gave up and went home so as not to affect Billie's performance. FYI, accusing someone of being a groomer is a severe libel case. Unless you're sure, which I know you are clueless about, you should STFU.
