Once, while in the military, I had the honor of spending an entire day with Rowdy Piper. We both sat next to each other on a long flight home. He was not only hilarious, but very down to earth and kept thanking me for my service. I later put his “bubblegum” line on the inside of my Kevlar. I still have the copy of my travel orders he signed the back of.

@@OrlandoShroom When you say thank you for your service what do you actually mean? As far as I am aware the military never "defended" or "protected" us. Only setup puppet regimes and put us where we're at right now. Even though it's not shown in the film that's exactly the kind of thing 'They Live' is about...

Ray Nelson’s short story “Eight O’Clock in the Morning,” on which John Carpenter based They Live, was first published in the November 1963 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. But Carpenter first encountered the story 23 years later, in its comic book adaptation, “Nada.”

Watch "Network" to get a similar vibe and message from an earlier movie. Also, Carpenter was using fiction to tell real life stories, with both this movie, and with "The Thing". There are shapeshifters among us. No, not in the literal sense. They pretend to be one thing, fellow whites, then suddenly they show their true colors, shalom! To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you're not allowed to criticize.

The message is clear: "there's too many of you, and too rebellious" They want subservient slaves, like chinese people, or desperate people from Africa... They don't want more westerns... People that think, that see that their game is rigged... Nope, they don't want more of us, thats why groups like BLM exist, not fight against racism (that is pointless, and even more so because the vast majority of the population get along just fine... Nope, is because this type of politics divide us. They keep throwing at us feminism, especially the third wave, because feminism at its core is pro abortion, and hate against men, they write laws to create disparity between mens and womans Laws that are more harmful to mens, than beneficial to womans. They advocate and propagate LGBTism, so sexual relations won't result in pregnancy... All this policies are made, so we, the best and most prosperous civilization on this planet, won't reproduce more of us, all in name of profit, smart averange people, is competition, don't forget that. By the way, internet is our glasses...

I was born in 1995 I just discovered this movie in dec.2021 I didn't get the luxury of seeing it in theaters or growing up in the 80s but I will say it's understandable how it could have went over so many peoples heads back then or made a mockery out of...this was the beginning of an end and people just didn't know how bad things were going to become living now and seeing the effects of how things elevated into a even worse reality of what they predicted scares me because we are living in it now I'm just thankful I've always had my glasses/contact lenses in my lost and mislead generation

Easily one of my favorite ever movies. Not only do I strongly agree with it's message but I believe we can all learn from it. Excessive capitalism is strangling us all. Piper and Carpenter absolutely nailed it.

You may not have noticed, but the name Frank Armitage that John Carpenter used as a pseudonym (mainly because he didn't want his real name used every time as a screenwriting credit) is actually Keith David's full character name in this movie. Nada's original first name was George in the short story and comic, then changed to John Nada in the movie. He also originally had a girlfriend called Lil, this character was changed to Meg Foster's character in the movie.

yes! absolutely. There are other movies that portray the truth of the world too but these are definitely some of the best examples. Eyes Wide Shut is another one, though a little less blatant. Also The Ghost Writer with Ewan McGregor, Chinatown, Capricorn One, and probably the most cryptic but filled with truths, Under The Silver Lake. Most of these are about the underlying evil forces of the earth, but nothing is as simply delivered as Truman Show and They Live. If you havent seen the ones I listed, check em out!

Yeah we've got a lot to tear down. Tesla stated that all of our nature, our organs, brainwaves etc. are within a certain bandwidth. If you could take control of that bandwidth you could basically control the world. We are now in an ocean of unnatural radiation and a former friend of mine (at least I saw him as a friend at some point in time) laughed at me when we were in our civil protection bunker last year if I am already feeling bad already because they added a 5G permanent line through the whole facility. The joke's on him though and he's the stupid one, every day a bit of rat poison kills you over time, you don't just drop dead....

I remember in 2005 or so this was on HBO or Cinemax. I absolutely love this movie and Roddy Piper as a huge wrestling fan growing up in the late 80s and 90s. The movie and its theme are used by people like Alex Jones as proof the " Illuminati" are the ones ruling the world and Carpenter tried to show them as the bad guys. I believe Carpenter is trying to show the Super Rich and Powerful ran the world in the 80s and they are hidden behind politicians who are scum run by the Super Rich. Anyway I love you Oliver and is at least my second time watching this retrospective, I have watched them all at least once, and you are the best!

This movie spoke the truth of America's economy when it came out. Unemployment, poverty, grew when this movie came out. It broke box office records for the time of year it came out and continued to do so and it was pulled from the theaters. This makes no sense. I didn't even know about this movie til it came out on video a year later.

They Live is realer than you think. I was up late one night watching T.V. in a V.A. hospital with another patient. The local news was on and a reporter was talking to a man. The T.V. flashed to black for a second and then it came back on and the man had no skin on his face. You saw his muscles and bones in his face. No skin ! I looked at the the guy sitting next to me and he looked at me. I said did you just see what I saw ? He said yeah ! They are among us !

Great retrospective/review, "They Live" is among my Top 3 favorite John Carpenter flicks along with "The Thing" and the original "Halloween". Its satire is still very relevant today in the nightmare dystopia of Trump's America. BTW, did you purposely time the release of this video to a day when people across the planet would be putting on special sunglasses, Oliver? :D
