The black guy actually knows from the start that his friend is right. He refuses to put on the glasses because he ALREADY knows that he gonna see smth that he does not want to see. This is a fight for his comfort zone.

YES. This is why this fight os so long. It shows how hard some people will fight out of fear of seeing things differently and having their beliefs challenged. This is Cinema.

Always remember when you argue with others... are we arguing over a false dichotomy? Are we clinging to false certainty? Are we designed to protect the very prison that has ensnared us? We must fight compassionately to wake each other up to whatever truth we find... and we must be willing to surrender to the truths others may have... the human family must survive together.

Easily my favourite fight scene in any movie, period. The fact that it's realistic where their punches get sloppier as they get more tired. The fact that it just GOES ON makes it so funny to watch. And finally it actually serves the story! Oh and as a bonus, they put in some wrestling moves too 😃😃😃

I like the Behind the Scenes video about this fight on the 4K remastered picture Blu Ray release from StudioCanal, they planned out most of the moves before hand doing several takes, Roddy Piper & Keith David having input for the best moves and John Carpenter was figuring out how to hide the thin mattresses from being seen by the cameras. The commentary is very informative, as well as very entertaining, it seems John Carpenter and Roddy Piper got along extremely well. Roddy kept saying that he overacted in several scenes, but Carpenter kept saying that he did very well for his first movie role. The story that Roddy Piper says during the motel scene with Keith David actually happened to Roddy when he was a kid, so he's genuinely speaking from the heart.

Ok, I woke up from a dead sleep with "not this year..." playing in my mind and I just had to rewatch this scene to see it, and I'm going to point out why Carpenter is my favorite filmmaker of all time: People often give Roddy's one liners the best coverage, such as with the classic "all outta bubblegum", or in this case the "start eating that trashcan" lines, but that's not what makes it great. Keith David's response is the punchline and the best line in the dang movie. "Not this year." There are so many implications in those 3 words. I could list them all, but I would almost GUARANTEE that in John Carpenter's mind the jokiest, easiest to obtain and simultaneously the most baffling reason he said "Not This Year" is because it implies that this exact bizzarre scenario happens to him at least on a yearly basis and he remembers the last time clearly. Comedic Genius.
