To be completely fair to Coney here, Smash is a completely separate subgenre of fighting game that does specifically that. This is a game that looks otherwise like an ordinary 3D fighter, a ring-out being instant death, and then suddenly saving yourself. It defies genre convention, like if you were able to input something to survive a headshot in a first-person shooter. It'd catch you off guard.
