However, based on what I thought, it was still his business to tell. The mother obviously knows the girl and thought she was just a friend/GF, but didn't think she was so dangerous to her son to banned her presence in his life. I don’t watch this show, solely going off this clip there are multiple layers going on. Yes, legally she is his wife and has the final say. However, without having seen the context of the whole episode, was it necessary for her to reveal that now? Maybe there was a looming medical decision that she disagree with? Or maybe she felt the mother was devaluing her role in the his life, wanting to make it clear how he values her? Clearly, there’s a breakdown in their relationship, for him not to feel comfortable sharing that part of his life with his mother. I assumed he’s college age, his mother may be struggling to let go of her role, the input, the guidance she once had in his life. Ultimately she has to let go, respect his new boundaries, always knowing she will have a place in his heart. Whatever mistakes she feels he may be making are his to make. If things do fall apart just be there to support him. Young adults have to give their parents grace, understanding that transitional period is hard for some more than others. Do their best to show their parents they still have a valuable role in my life, just in a different way.

For all of those watching out of context Laura is one of the best depictions of a white parent to biracial children I’ve seen in a YA show. She even ends up as a lawyer living in a predominantly black disenfranchised community, and she’s an extremely supportive parent and community member. someone recognizes her privilege In this scene she’s worried about her TEENAGE son who might die, and this is how she finds out he got secretly married in Vegas to a girl who originally came to them pregnant lying about Jordan(the son) being the father of her baby. They’d been helping her, even after she came clean that Jordan wasn’t the father, but she is now a teen mom with an uncertain future. And she finds out about his marriage (with forged parental signatures since they were underage) through said girl announcing she’s his wife in order to trump his worried parents for information in the hospital... love Simone but the mother had every right to react this way within context. Everyone is valid in this scenario, if anything the son Jordan is just a little bit naive and optimistic. He hadn’t told his parents yet because he knew they wouldn’t approve of him being MARRIED before graduation (they come around and remain supportive regardless), let alone the way they went about it. Great show that I’d highly recommend.

The wife could have waited after the mom divided all the questions and she could have simplified the overall conversation so the doctor could give her a substation version of things. My eldest living child has an extensive medical history and no one knows it the way I do, because I was there. Every surgery, every procedure, every medication, every side effect, every complication, every intolerance, every allergy, every therapy. Not even her father knows it the way I do. I've watched that child die and be revived before. She's 11. If in 5 years, some arrogant young man tried to tell me to shut my mouth while I'm trying to get a hold on the situation and how the current care plan could be impacted by her medical history, I'd likely have a much larger fit than this woman had.

I’m with the wife. I got married young and my husband got in a car accident soon 12 days later. His siblings were trying to bully me into what I should do… meanwhile they never checked on me the entire time. I never left his side and had no money to feed myself for a week. The staff were more kind to me than my in laws and brought me trays of food from discharged patients. It was even worse when he died (a few years later). They were after the insurance money.
