Hey, maritime engineer here! In modern ships, you have things called 'bulkheads' in the inside of the hull. It devides the inside of the ship into smaller parts, so if the ship were to collide, only a part of the hull would fill with water. Unless there's an entire rip from bow to midship, she'll be able to remain afloat until reaching the closest port!

Even if he did build a cruise ship named after the Titanic, they could never actually replicate the experience. Even 3rd class passengers had a better meal experience than what we're used to. 1st class had like 8-course meals. They had smoking rooms. They had huge ballrooms with furniture made of noble woods that can't even be commercialized now. There was SO much that any sane investor would deem unnecessary today. Fun fact, the titanic was actually a “sequel” to its first sister ship “RMS Olympic”. Olympic did collide with the “HMS Hawk” (another ship) but luckily didn’t sink, making the “unsinkable” claims even stronger. Thereafter came the titanic (who we all know) and lastly came the third sister ship named“Britannic”, who unfortunately sailed into a mine, being the second one of the three sisters, to sink. Working on all these ships was the maid Violet Jessop, who miraculously survived all three incidents and went on to be called “Miss unsinkable” (Let me know if I got any information wrong)

@@moonriverinc7896 German ships laid sea mines throughout the Mediterranean Sea. HMHS Britannic, a hospital ship en route to pick up some wounded from a Grecian port city, travelled through the Kea Channel and encountered one, which tore a gaping hole in her side. It twisted her frame and knocked her wireless cables from the masts. She may have survived as she was built to withstand 6 compartments flooded (which is a lot, as even modern ships today are still commonly built to withstand 2 to 3 flooding compartments). Sadly, there were open portholes due to the heat that let in excessive water, so she sank in 55 minutes. There were 30 deaths, most caused by the turning propellers, which prematurely launched boats could not avoid. She hadn't actually picked up the wounded, yet, so I can't imagine how many would have died if she were filled to capacity with soldiers.

If ONE less water tight chamber making up the ships hull had been spared from the sideswiping iceberg (or if they had seen it to begin with) it may not have sunk. i hate it because of how far it's been taken, even i have been cancelled over personal grudges people had for me and i certainly do acknowledge when i do something wrong. half the time it's completely unnecessary, people have taken it way too far. it just became a vendetta thing rather than genuinely holding people accountable for problematic behavior. people lie a lot to make someone look bad or completely blow things out of proportion. conceptually and in many instances like this, you're right. it's a good idea in theory but in practice it's gotten out of hand in recent years. just adding in some extra nuance is all, not everyone who has been cancelled is a bad person it's a case by case thing by now.

@@mr.bingusthecat i'm no expert but i think the common knowledge aspect of it is that there was a combo of very poor decision making on the part of the captain, bad luck, the fact that they hit the iceberg from the side and not head-on (it was better fortified for head-on collisions) so it tore open a big hole, and this meant that watertight compartments inside the ship (intended to keep it afloat even if it was stove in and a few of them flooded) filled with water and bc they weren't properly sealed at the top the water overflowed as the ship tilted and flooded more than just the compartments where the hole was, so that it sank. also there were issues with the lifeboats obviously. but if op has corrections/more info they defs know more than me haha i just worked on boats for a while and this is what i heard
@nichollser7 ай бұрын
SAME LOL wasn't it that the watertight bulkheads didn't go up high enough, so the water just spilled over and it was said she could float with like 3 compartments filled or something but since they weren't high enough they just kept filling with water until the whole ship was brought down

Honestly it’s kinda a miracle the Titanic even stayed afloat for as long as it did and it has to do with where the iceberg hit her and the craftsmanship. A lot of people tend to make jokes about how fast it sank but she stayed afloat for nearly three hours which allowed the crew to get as many people as they could into the lifeboats.
