2 interesting details about the villain of this movie: 1. The screaming is actually a nod to the first how to train your dragon book. The books are very different to the movies. In them, vikings have always trained dragons and capturing and training your first dragon is sort of a rite of passage. However they train the dragons by screaming at them and intimidating them. (like Drago does in this movie) Since book Hiccup isn't intimidating enough, he instead learns the dragon language and tries to befriend toothless properly (which isn't easy since book Toothless is a total brat) 2. The hooked spear weapon that Drago has is inspired by a real life tool that is used to "train" young elephants. They are abused with that tool so that when they are older and bigger and could easily kill their Trainer they don't because they're afraid of getting hurt. Considering that the bewilderbeasts have tusks like elephants, I think the implications are quite clear.

And that's exactly why HTTYD 3 ending doesn't work in the films. They tried so hard to tie it to the books at the last minute, that it feels wrong. In the films, it makes no sense to claim they captured their dragons and treated them as something less. Hiccup was Toothless' partner and best friend, he wasn't his pet.

That’s one of my favourite qualities about Hiccup, He ALWAYS gives people a chance. Again and again and again not out of naïveté but out of a deep understanding that people need time, opportunity and just a chance to choose to change. The way he shows mercy and knows people need it, is just so profound in a character especially a male one. I just love it so much!
@thecocoacouch
@thecocoacouch Жыл бұрын
Yeah for sure. I like to think that he’s a natural with dragons and not great with people at the start of the trilogy and then by the end, he knows people and how to run a village. I like when the lesson isn’t super obvious. Like yes he gives everyone a chance, but it gets his dad killed when he tries it on the wrong person etc. a bit to think about hey

I feel like a lot of the difference in Toothless that you're picking up on in this one, where he's more of a pet and less intimidating is, generally speaking, because Hiccup and Toothless have actually had time to bond. In the first movie, they were starting the bonding process, but after five years together, building that symbiotic relationship (after all, without Hiccup, there is no flight for Toothless)... they've really forged a powerful relationship with one another as partners in a way that none of the other dragons have with their own riders. But, I do think that one of your assessments about Toothless is that he is different from most other dragons with how intelligent he is. Much as... one of the things that separated - and separates Hiccup from other Vikings is how intelligent he is. Also, that part early on where you're saying "Shouldn't it be where the chieftain dies and passes it down to his son?" Meanwhile, I'm there just laughing nervously... "Haha...ha...ha... yeah... right?"
@thecocoacouch
@thecocoacouch Жыл бұрын
Hahaha oops. And yeah I never really connected that, hiccup being toothless equal counterpart in intelligence also. ☺️

@@thecocoacouch To be fair, I only just put that together as I was watching your reactions to it. That's one of the reasons that I love reactions - getting to see the things that other people pick up on that I didn't when watching it, myself, that I then get to build on in my own thought processes. That shared experience of building meaning from these stories.

The reason why the scenes of dragons flying are so amazingly realistic is because the animators went to a flight school (If I recall correctly) to learn the dynamics of flight and how the wind affects the wings, et cetera

Hiccup is 20. The Dragon from the last movie did not die from having Toothless breathe fire into it's mouth. It died because Hiccup aimed for it's wings, making them weaker and unable to use them for a brake and then leading it into dive. The fire in mouth was a way to distract it before it realized it was close to the ground. Watch the scene again. They led it up high, blew holes into the wings and also made it mad so it stops thinking. Then they led it to a dive and fired into the mouth. The TV series (Riders of Berk and Race to the Edge) are the 5 years in between the first and second movies. Explains why Hiccup will negotiate before fighting, Hiccup's and Astrid's relationship, and how Stoick got Skullcrusher. The animation is meh (it IS a TV series) but most of the stories are pretty cool.
@thecocoacouch
@thecocoacouch Жыл бұрын
It blew up from the inside when making impact because of all the gas it had accumulated. But hey I guess we’d have to ask the creators 😂 I’ve seen most of the show and I loved it. I can see why he prefers to negotiate, hell, I would have done the same as I think death should be the last option. But as a chief it was clear he needed to be with his people like his father said. That was the message Stoic left behind. Sometimes what’s best for your people outweighs your moral compass. Sacrifice. But of course…..that’s an interpretation 😂
@thecocoacouch
@thecocoacouch Жыл бұрын
Edit: everything you said is correct….but so was the shooting into the mouth 😂 it was a bomb landing and exploding (Gass internally AND the impact of not slowing down)
@trekkiexb5
@trekkiexb5 Жыл бұрын
@@thecocoacouch granted, the impact of the shot was important, but it will not kill the Red Death, as it didn't kill the terror earlier in the movie. Granted, Toothless wasn't trying to kill the Terror, just shoo him away, but taking size comparisons and even the "hot" shot from Toothless's mouth, I feel the shot would not have killed him(her?). Which is my point. I think we agree on the general sense but our views on the details are different.
@checkerchabo
@checkerchabo 6 ай бұрын
@@trekkiexb5 i know im late but the holes your talking about where burned into the wings from the burning gas inside the Red Death. It is shown during the dive down where they slowly burned bigger and bigger. The shots from outside in the cloud only weakend it like you said, but didnt blow holes into them because it is fireproof from outside like every other dragon. On impact all of the gas exploded inside it. @thecocoacouch was ride about everything he said the reason for its death was the shot in the mouth.

I think it's a Matriarchy that you're thinking of when it comes to the "new chief", I'm pretty sure in those kinda of cultures it doesn't matter if the heir is your blood or not, so if we put it into the real world most likely if the son was full of rage and seemed to only hurt their people the chief would most likely end up picking someone else as the next in line for chief.
