I think a good way to show him learning his courage is with his bark. The bark that scares away the predators, that protects the farm from danger. It could symbolize his bravery as the guardian of the farm. When he learns his purpose in the farm as the livestock guardian dog, and learns how to be brave, he finally is able to bark like he does today.

Watching how Toby dog lights up when he sees you...might want to include Toby realizing he works for the gentle farmer. Or perhaps that he comes to realization the farmer and his wife are pretty new to this whole farming thing. The partnership being the thing that sets him on the road to being a great guard dog. Thanks for all the great content. Just love the farm!

This! The relationship between dogs and humans is centuries old, so Toby realizing at some point that he’s not just there to do a job, or be the farm’s protector, but also to be a member of the family, could give him the courage and direction he needs. Realizing that that this is his FAMILY and he wants to keep them safe because he loves them, not just because it’s his job.

I love the idea of the book. As a mother who instilled a love of reading in my kids, I think the more personalities you are able to give the animals the more it will draw the kids in. Plus you are a natural with telling stories. A man i admired very much told me when I started my business and was delaying everything till it was all perfect. He just said, do what you can from the heart and the rest will happen. Just do it.

I think the plot sounds amazing! I really like the over-arching concept of responsibility. Young Toby has responsibility sort of thrust upon him by his mom's teachings and the farmer, and kinda struggles with accepting the responsibility. When he runs away, he briefly rejects it entirely. Which is very relatable! But then, as Toby makes friends with all the other animals on the farm, he learns WHY responsibilities exist, and finds himself WANTING to take on the responsibility- not because he's told to, but because he loves his friends and wants to protect them. It's a wonderful story with a wonderful message!!

I love the idea of a children's book. I think you just worked your way through to the ending. Good to have a moral learned at the end. For the illustrator, decide if you want more realistic pictures, or more caricatures. I prefer the more realistic, like the Peter Rabbit illustrations. I think the caricatures fit better with the short story small children's format.

You are a natural story teller, so I would say the first draft was the best. My son is a natural story teller, as well, and when he was little I home-schooled him for a while. He really struggled writing, so I got him a voice recorder (you guys are about the same age), and told him to tell his story, then write what he said first, then start the revisions from there. I'm not saying how you should do this, just saying his first version was always the best. Dogs are so much into the smell of things...it may be cool to make note of the smells of all your characters, or emotions, or something.

It would be really cool to see Toby Dog looking at you getting cattle and struggling a lot because of it, so he realizes that the gentle farmer who gave him a home also doesn´t quite know what he´s doing, making him accept himself and gaining the confidence to become a true livestock guardian dog. I can tell you from personal experience that acknowledging that you don´t have to be perfect to get the job done is sometimes the boost you need to exploit your potential, and I think it´s a powerful message to give to someone from an early age

I love the part about Toby overcoming the challenge of BECOMING, working through the social aspects, working through guilt, feelings of inadequacy and rising up after a perceived failure and finding his place on the farm. 👍 Also, tempering that perceived failure with some practicality, because this is the reality of farm life, predators will come, sometimes they win and you learn from it.

with your recent video and the reality that Toby will someday leave the farm i would suggest adding a photograph of Toby with you at the end or beginning of the book, we usually take photographs of our pets but rarely do we include ourselves in them. Having a picture to honor Toby is important for the book I think, but remember that it's your story too, so don't forget to include a picture of yourself, your wife, and barn cats if possible. After all, it's his farm to protect and you all are a part of it too.

About the story... Considering how Toby acted with the cats you could consider changing the initial relationship - instead of having the cats teasing him, have them maybe ignore him and having Toby seeing Pablo as an idol? So cool and gracefull and respected - both by the animals and (in Toby's eyes) by the farmer. Seeing how Toby went so far to even share his food with Pablo it might be close to reality too xD

I've been watching you for over a year now and you've been telling your story all along. I love how you describe the different personalities and dramas around the farm. The pecking order so to speak. I would write the book from the animals perspective. Start out before Toby comes to the farm. Something goes after the ducks and that prompts you to consider a dog. One of the ducks overhears you talking with your wife and gossip starts between all the animals. One of the chickens can be the farm gossip that spreads the news to each group. The buzz and excitement the day Toby joins the farm. And of course Pablo. He's a grump but wise, shows Toby the ropes and they become friends. The possibilities are endless. I'm an adult and I want this book! I may even share it with my niece and nephew lol.

You could make a point of Toby "finding his bark" since that's his primary way of defending the farm. Finding out that his own bark can make him seem like a formidable guardian to the local predators even though he's not quite grown up yet and that would give him confidence. Would be a good analogy to kids finding their own voice and have confidence in their words.

One of the reasons I subscribed to your KZbin channel is your story telling abilities. Also, I love all of your animals and the kind way you and Allison treat them. The first video I watched was your story about you and a high school friend. I have never forgotten your wonderful story and your wish you could have told her your deep feelings of your friendship. I definitely would buy books about your farm. I collect children's books and your coming publications would be right at home. I absolutely love your channel.

It will be a wonderful book! I, as a kid at heart if not in body so much anymore, hope to follow along with the story of the story(stories) you have to tell about the farm! You can do it, Morgan!! We, all of us, are rooting for you! Cheers

You’re a great storyteller and it always brings a smile and excitement to me when I watch your new videos every time you upload. It sounds like you have a good plan in mind already of how you want to execute your children’s book. However one thing Id love to know more about is how many illustrations you’d be interested to have peppered in your book or if it was just the cover and what styles you’re looking at for the illustrations. You never know you may already have a fan of your videos who might be the perfect candidate for being your illustrator for at least this book. Whenever you’re ready to make that final leap you could do a callout for your fans and see how many portfolios come streaming in. As I mentioned previously your future illustrator already might be interested and you’re aren’t aware of it yet.

The story sounds delightful. It seems to me, you , your farm , Toby and many of the animals are each an example of starting over, settling in and thriving, with challenges met and conquered. Sounds like a great theme to me ! God bless you .

Something I have enjoyed about your farm is the names that you give your animals and birds. I also really love the dynamic in the individual “neighborhoods” for lack of better terms. Love ❤️ the protagonist, Toby!,!

I think you've got a good foundation for the plot already! Because you didn't mention what areas you're second guessing in your third draft I'm going to spitball some potential things, but please don't feel you need to re-evaluate them if you're already confident in these parts: - Would it make sense for Toby to have a want/need clash that he resolves over the book? Like he wants his own farm or wants a particular role but needs to learn what he needs is to find his niche in the greater community or understand his true calling/strength? - How might the story change if Toby doesn't initially know he wants to/is supposed to be a protector? For example he just thinks he should be the boss/sheriff of the farmyard and be respected but doesn't first understand that respect comes with looking out for others (and learns it over the course of the book). Would it make Toby's journey more engaging? - Does Toby ever have any interactions with the bobcat before their big confrontation near the climax and if so does the bobcat interact with him in a way that changes his world view? For example, maybe around the mid-point Toby mistakenly thinks he's got everything figured out (could be like I'm biggest so I'm on top) and the encounter with the bobcat and something the bobcat says triggers a shift in his world view - Is the plot more of a hero's journey or a fish out of water finding their place? Obviously some overlap there but depending on what you're going for you might be able to better look at your plot structure and see if there's things that could be adjusted to make it stronger Lastly, it never hurts to ask someone to read it. For now it probably makes sense for it to be someone you know personally you trust can give you some good feedback. Make it a whole conversation; I usually find that plus having a full back and forth conversation on your proposed plot really helps jog fresh ideas. Good luck Morgan!

Your one of my most watched channels on KZbin! I grew up in a very populated city and my parents started raising chickens and ducks in our family backyard that was smaller then 1/3 of an acre and got me into the backyard farming lifestyle. Me and my wife are young millennials still trying to finish college and get our jobs so we can purchase a house. I joke with my wife all the time about how I cant wait to have a yard so I can raise waterfowl/poultry in my backyard again, I always tell her the stories about what goes on at your farm all the way over in Vermont and she rolls her eyes and goes your obsessed, I guess I live through you Morgan. If you create a children's book, I cant wait to buy it to read to my future children and hopefully be able to teach them how to raise and respect animals in our own backyard. Your an inspiration to many and I hope that you have much success in all your endeavors in life!

Morgan I love your channel. And a good portion of that is that you are a excellent storyteller. Just the creativity and naming your farm creatures makes me smile. I for sure will be ordering one of your books when you publish it. That is if you'll mail it to Canada. I'll be reading it to my great grand children as I'm going to live with them.

I am a poet and have judged several competitions. What I have learned is that you check your area for a writers' league so that you can joint a critique group and as you write it and share each chapter with the critique group. Also, read it out loud to yourself. Anything that trips you up -- draws your attention with a huh ? look at changing that, Don't go for perfection because it does not exist. Then have a person of the age you are writing for and let this person do a critique.

Love your book idea. Coming of age and also learning he is not alone but an essential part of a farm where all the animals and people also have their own essential jobs. When it all comes together, he sees that the farm is alive and his true home of the heart. And it is true. I know you won’t make it too sugar-coated; the most important lessons are often learned through hard times.

I can hardly wait to get a copy or two of your book - being a G’ma is great. You’ve got the knack for storytelling the way you give voice to all your animals, and Toby is the perfect character to start with. Best of luck to you with this wonderful project.

I love hearing that someone is making stories about homesteading because there needs to be more! Id have loved to have read a book like you’re making when I was in elementary school. I was always looking for good stories following animals living in the human world because the vague and mysterious descriptions of the ways the humans interacted with the animals who couldn’t understand them was super cool. I can’t wait to possibly hear about how you describe how Toby interprets you. Not many of the stories I read growing up involved dogs who were trained or actually trying to cooperate to achieve goals with their human companions, so the homesteading aspects of Toby’s life make this an awesomely unique story concept to me.
