You know what's worse than men not being able to write women? Women not being able to write women. My stepmom gives me a lot of her crime fiction novels when she's done with them, and they're almost all written by women. The amount of times I've seen sentences like, "She ambled across the room, drunk, her heaving breasts swaying side-to-side in anticipation of [Male Love Interest]'s affection," is insane. And I'll read things like this and go, "Wait. This is written by a woman? What?" and it's super cringe because she should know better. And it's not like these books are written for men. Their audience is clearly middle aged women. I wish I'd have kept one of the ones she gave me, because there was a whole chapter - in a crime novel, keep in mind!! - which described in detail the backstory of the female lead, but it would be like describing her life in college and always go back to, "But no one knew her for her smarts. No, the boys back then all knew her for her breasts, famous among the campus first houses." Beautiful work.

Like others have said, pseudonyms are a thing, and are particularly common if the writer's actual gender doesn't match their audience or the primary consumer demographic for the genre they write. JK uses Robert Galbraith for her transphobic crap, for example, because the crime thriller genre is infamous for its lack of respect and its unfair double standards for female writers, despite women being the primary consumers of crime thrillers. Unless you actively research the author, you can't guarantee that a writer is the gender of their pseudonym. The other factor is that many publishing houses *do* push authors to change their stories and writing style to be "appealing to more demographics," with the "more demographics" actually meaning cis, straight men. Cis straight men are still considered the "golden" demographic to appeal to, because they still have a disproportionate amount of power in society despite not having the same degree of majority they once did.

As a lesbian who has read a crap ton of lesbian fanfiction and novels, the descriptions of breasts in these 'works' is mind boggling. If one of the stories I read even bothered to describe a characters chest, it has never been so odd or detailed (if one can call the incompetent ramblings in this video detailed...). Well, they're an errogenous zone and a main point of interest for sexual partners, so not quite as 'whatever' as a nose or knee. I can understand sometimes bouncing them in the mirror proudly, kinda like some guys might feel about their dicks. @kanashiiookami6537 Жыл бұрын
@@chromedruidess2546 you don't have to go all out, sometimes readers just want an idea if what the characters are wearing. If they're taller or shorter than whomever they're talking to, and a general idea of build. Are they fit? Are they chubby? Are they white or BIPoC? Or if sci-fi and/or fantasy, do they have different skin/eye/hair colour outside the norm? These are all just small things you can drop in a mention rather than going all "My Immortal" with every single character on the page (if you don't know the reference you can give Jaques ze whipper's videos on here a listen, because he's working his way through that hilarity of a fanfic) so mentioning something like dusting off their jeans, pulling up the hood of their bunnyhug (hoodie to you?), or rolling up the sleeves of their dress shirt (etc) can be used as beats that give us something other than talking heads. And it's not just that readers want you to describe characters for the sake of whom to base an image off. That's not the problem (most of the time at least). It's more that the descriptions, be they of characters, or settings, can help ground readers in your world and immerse them in it rather than them feeling disconnected and disinterested. Sorry for "mansplaining" if you already knew this all though!

Jaundiced, sallow, skeletal, thin hair, etc. were certainly used. Gender was revealed by a nurse. But I'm not going into a full physical description. Is it really relevant? I think the situation provides enough context. Now that I think about it, maybe my descriptions are actually fine. Tbh that complaint has only come from my primary beta reader who is a very supportive s/o but never otherwise reads fiction and possibly has the imagination of a brick. He wants it spelled out. I'm pretty sure they meant "bound feet" in the sense that her ankles were tied/bound together, which would have meant she was "bunny-hopping" to move (which kiiiiinda explains the "boobs bouncing in all directions" sentiment, even if that's not what her boobs would actually do during that kind of movement, lol). The 1916 dude seems like he firmly believes the beautiful blond lover is himself, but he probably failed to notice that she likely left him for a man who actually valued her and didn't think of her as an empty-headed gossiper. In my writing, I tend to barely give any physical description to most characters. Partially to let people fill in their own ideas, but mostly because I don't really think of people by their physical bodies unless prompted. Humans all look alike to me. ^_^;; So I write stories about main characters that aren't human anymore, so they literally don't pay attention to such things.

I don’t have any experience with this, but I do still want to help, so I’ll try my best... As everyone else is saying, make sure you’re safe before coming out. At least ask them why they’re transphobic before coming out, or make sure you have a place to stay if things go wrong. Let them know that you’ll always love them, no matter what. (…Unless you don’t love them. That’s fine.) If they’re the type of person to say “but it’s not natural!”, they’re wrong. There’s dozens of animals that have shown to act like like their opposite gender, there are gender-based medical conditions (if that makes sense), and it is natural. And we’re not wild animals, anyway. We’re humans, not ants. We can change. I apologize if I said something wrong, I just wanted to help, and I hope I did.
@lif6737
@lif6737 Жыл бұрын
At the end of the day, you need to balance your sense of security and your sense of self. Coming out can be tough, especially in an unaccepting family, but being able to openly be your authentic self is so important. What makes these situations so hard is that we know who we are, but in seeking to appease our families we often have to, in a sense, deny who we are for their approval. In coming out, we can truly unabashedly accept ourselves, but it may come with others refusing to accept you. It’s fair to wait out of your own safety, but if you feel secure enough, sometimes you need to take that leap of faith and come out. Family can often surprise us, both in how understanding they can be, or unfortunately how monstrous they can be. If they love you, they’ll be willing to hear you out and they’ll come around, but sometimes what we need is to surround us with other people who do accept who we truly are. You deserve to be loved and accepted, and those who deny you that may not be people you should keep in your life forever. Wishing you the very best
@KristiChan1
@KristiChan1 Жыл бұрын
If they're transphobic, I'd recommend waiting until you've moved out. When you're still living with your parents and if they're not good people, it's easier for them to control you. Do you have any friends or other family members you trust to come out to who won't tell your parents? That might be a good alternative so you don't feel like you're entirely on the closet.

Honestly I'm very confused, I have never heard "pliant" used in reference to wood. Usually people, definitely never wood. Maybe the wood usage is more common in the UK? Go look further into the definitions besides the first Google definition (try Merriam-Webster, for example), and you will see that there are many other definitions to the word. None of them were being used correctly in the sentence from the video, though. Most common usage I have seen of the word, honestly, is to describe a submissive person in a sex scene.
