The main issue with United is their poor recruitment. Players have been brought in with no specific plans to play in a structured system. They just sign any big name player who's interested or they could convince to join them. Now they have an unbalanced squad of players who are overpriced and underperforming.

I, as a non English Bayern fan, think that United is quite comparable with the mismanagement of Barcelona. Just throwing money, paying insane amounts of salary, basically for nothing. United has maybe made one good transfer (Bruno) in the last 8 years or something, the rest is a pure waste of money. Same happened at Barca: spending without actually building a team. The only advantage Barca had was Messi, but see now. They all keep firing managers (even some of the best in the world) because they are always the issue according to management. Maybe they are the problem? Maybe the players are the problem? And then they try to fix it with buying a single £100+ mil, offering him 500k a week, as if that's going to work when you don't have a team. I totally get that the premier league is on another level compared to the Bundesliga, but why don't they try to learn from Bayern for example? Coman, Gnabry and Lewandowski combined cost Bayern only €29 mil. United payed more for only the legs of Maguire 😂. Add Davies and Kimmich (cost Bayern €18 mil in total) and you are able to get his arms as well, then you only have to pay €40 mil extra for his body and head.

Pep, Conte or any stellar manager would have this squad of players as title contenders in very little time. This is arguably one of the strongest teams in world football on an individual basis but the team dynamic and general direction of play is lacklustre. When you've got a team devoid of confidence and direction, if you're going to bring in someone interim they've got to really know how to get into the players heads and change mentality quickly, usually a big personality. It looks like Ralf ain't that guy. He may have a good footballing brain and work well longer term, but as an interim manager he's not really working out. It’s pretty easy to summarise. All professional footballers are capable of playing brilliantly. The thing which separates the best from the rest is consistency. Almost all of Uniteds players aren’t consistent. Look at City - you know before a game even if some play poorly that Cancelo will give you a 7 or 8. So will Dias, so will Rodri, so will Foden, so will De Bruyne. These guys don’t ever have a bad game. They play between 7 & 10 every single match. United have players who can play great and win games. But it’s one in every 3 or 4 games. Form is temporary, class is permanent.

And some of those United players would be the same perennial 7 or 8s in a different team and some of those City players would be inconsistent not playing for City. Who knew the name Mo Salah before Klopp's people found him? Look at him now. Time and time again it's been seen in football that unheard of players can come together to make a stellar team when the stars align while the eleven of the world's best fifty players won't necessarily come together to make an even passable team. The names of the XI aren't 100% of a teams potential, more like 50-60%.

the problem with united is fairly obvious to me... always out numbered in midfield, ageing first starting 11 and wanting to play a press thats only there half heartedly, Ronaldo HAS to constantly press from the front but only does it in spells and because of that, the players behind dont know if they are sitting back or pressing too so just end up being disjointed! plus the tempo of united is so slow! everyone is standing around waiting for the ball instead of making runs and giving options

Yes but we also have a captain that averages 1-2 devastating blunders per match, a right back who’s uncomfortable with the ball at his feet, a starting eleven that frequently concedes goals in the first 10 minutes of games, a scouting system that seems to consistently purchase the wrong players, ownership that doesn’t understand the game and appoints bankers to football positions in which they are not qualified, etc. etc. This is just a massive project.

Difference is that Bielsa and (in a very different way) Dyche have actually achieved relative success over the last few years. The reason for their success is precisely because of those principles and because the players bought into them. Depends in what way. On the pitch you'd love having Ronaldo but is he willing to play as part of a system that might take him out of his comfort zone? (not tracking back, solely hunting goals). 4-4-2 formation is a relic from 20 years ago. At least in attack... 442 was standard in England and lots of the world back then but football tactics has progressed literal light years since then. It's true I'd say that I the modern game you just can't have only two players covering the whole of Central midfield, it just isn't enough. You need three. It's also a formation that basically lends itself to having your main tactic with the ball being wing play and bombing in crosses from wide and hoping one of two strikers gets their head on it. Again that tactic is a relic. Not to say crosses from out wide is irrelevant in football but you have to add more intricate passing and more of a game plan. Most teams today that won't be their primary tactic with the ball. 442 however is still used as a defensive formation but the players will be tight and congested and sit behind the ball.

Honestly analysts that come on sky are always terrible at their job but to add to your point the reason people are so critical is simply because managers from other clubs have been quite impactful. Take Conte, he has definitely improved the side in areas that spurs clearly seemed weak. Ofcourse not perfect but clear signs of improvement. And when you look at united they were literally a couple of players away from being title contenders, so its only right for the scrutiny for their performance.

When Ole first came in, the team was brilliant. My point is, the team you get from a previous manager determine the success you have in your first few games. Under Lambard, Chelsea was a fun team to watch (they were actually pretty unlucky at times) and Tuchel inherited that team. Tottenham just got away from a manager that's tactically very demanding, Mourinho, the same coach Ole inherited his team from. Again, I don't think it's realistic to ask a coach to get his team playing the beautiful game after only a few weeks. This would either require magical power or to inherit a squad ready to play the way you want. Manchester United are unable to take possession of the ball for years. I actually think, it's a good thing that this Manchester United's team is losing. Players won't be complacent and think they are better than they actually are.
