He should just take a page out of Tim Duncans book. They are more similar in some ways. Duncan was not the flashiest player and his domination was based on methodical movements, not any kind of agility reflex.
@michaelahurtАй бұрын
Easier said than done. Just because you are moving slowly and pacing your movements doesn't mean you aren't being reflexive. Those micro movements and the ability to mirror is WAY harder. Duncan's proprioception -- his ability to control his body and know where he is in space -- was other worldly. You're thinking of _old_ Tim Duncan but Tim at 22 was an insane athlete. SA literally played him at SF. Edey just can't move his body like that.
@JC-vz9vnАй бұрын
I hate these type of comments-....just a lot of wishful thinking. Tim Duncan wasn't fast but he was quick in his prime. Go back and look at some of his game during his prime years. Now if you're comparing his ability to move to Duncan's last year in the league I'll give you that but no way did he have or has ever had Duncan's IQ.
@localneo-graphic464723 күн бұрын
I think a lot of people, including yourself, just didn't see pre-injury Duncan in the 90s and very early 00s. Even prime Duncan was only playing on one-and-a-half knees, and while he wasn't a living highlight reel, he was still a very mobile and athletic player. Like there is a reason why he was considered a truly generational talent coming out of college, he could've gone in the 96 draft (an all-time draft, unlike 97 which was ass aside from Duncan) and STILL gone first overall over Iverson. In particular prime Duncan simply did not miss paint rotations and was always able to reposition after drop offs. That said, Duncan's floorbound style of rim protection probably is his best bet for protecting the rim, just using size, strength and length to contest shots and not even bothering jumping unless absolutely necessary. That will allow him to move around the paint far better, though still not as well as Duncan.

Best analysis of Edey that I've seen. Thanks for the good work. As far as Edey goes, one thing that everyone seems to miss is his trajectory of improvement. He is going to work on every aspect of his game and improve it, and fix those areas if you can go by what he's done every year for the last 6 years ( or whatever it is) since he started playing basketball. Plus it seems like he can be a genuine 3 pt threat. He'll start hitting a couple of them every game, if they get the ball to him. He's smart and he listens and he's got the raw ability. I expect to see him in the all star game either this year or next. We all just hope he stays healthy. He played a lot of minutes every night at Purdue, 30+ I believe, and he never missed a game for injury. He'll get more and more minutes as the season wears on. I expect a double double every night. All I heard last spring was that Edey would never amount to much in the NBA. I didn't accept that premise. But we're about to find out.
@Davivd2Ай бұрын
I'm not worried about his defense. Rudy Gobert has similar mobility and nobody ever complains about it. I know that Rudy really makes up for it with his strengths, Edey's strengths are similar and he's a rookie. He'll learn. What I am concerned about is his offense. Zach Edey is fools gold. Can he set screens and get offense rebounds? Yes. But that's all he's going to give Memphis. I've watched him play 3 games and EVERY basket that he scored was from a drop pass into the dunker spot, or from a post up. None of his post ups shown here are with Ja Morant on the floor.Ja Morant was 4th in the league in usage rate before his suspension. This team is going to go through Ja for offense. That means Edey is not posting up, clogging up the lane for Morant. Edey will set screens and not get a whole lot of pick and roll touches (he's got a lot of growing to do as the roll man). Edey will also get drop passes and lobs in the dunker spot. He will get offensive rebound put backs. His post up game will not happen at all when Ja is on the floor. I expect him to be a Steven Adams 2.0 it's 2024, not 1994. Post up touches are not going to go to him in the regular season. Also, I'm going to reveal my age here a bit and tell a story. Coaches like to decide what a player is going to be and put them in a box. Players can either live in that box, or be so damn amazing that they don't listen to their coach, and get some back up from management to keep doing what they do, and then the coach gets fired and the player can thrive. Case in point: Kurt Thomas. He was another generational big man in college. He averaged 30 points per game in division one college. That's almost unheard of. Kareem Abdul Jabbar type of college numbers. He also fell in the draft. What's really crazy was that this was in the 90's when post play was big, but I digress. The Knicks got Thomas in the late first round. I watched every Knicks game that I could the following season, thinking that Thomas was going to be the steal of the draft. He never got into the game. Finally, one game late into the season, with Patrick Ewing out due to injuries and foul trouble (IIRC Someone else got injured mid game too) Jeff Van Gundy had to put Tomas in the game. Thomas goes straight to the block, posts up, and scores. Van Gundy glares at him. Next time down, Thomas on the block, posts up and shoots. Van Gundy is yelling at him. Thomas goes like 3 for 4 over the next 8 possessions or so. Van Gundy is pissed. He yanks Thomas from the game. Kurt Thomas played 20 years in the NBA. All that he ever did was rebound and shoot put backs on offensive boards. This is exactly what is going to happen to Zach Edey.

in Memphis and Ja defense, Ja didn't play a lot of preseason game maybe 3-4 games. Also Ja only played about 20 mins a piece give or take a minute. A lot of times Ja and Edey weren't on the court together either. Edey got a lot of play with Yuki and Jaylen Wells. Few runs with Desmond Bane as well. I have a few reason on why that was the case - but i think your overacting on preseason. First couple of games the Grizz admitted they needed to use Edey more. Notice in game 3 or 4 the ball was coming to him more and he had more post up. Keep in mind the last time this team had a big that can score (A center) was with Jonas V...That was like 5 years ago.. so they have to get use to having a big man threat in the paint to feed.

@@postsniper-7532 Gobert is the BEST PnR/help defender by every conceivable metric for the last decade. Not the worst. You realize we can actually track and measure this stuff, right? 🤦♂️ This is like saying Steph Curry is the worst shooter in the NBA Rudy's playoff issues are more about his offense because teams can go small which pulls him out of the paint on defense and he can't make them pay for it on offense. His one big weakness is horizontal mobility. He *cannot* be in two places at once like Draymond, AD, Mobley, Tatum, Giannis, Bam, Wemby, JJJ, etc where he can take away the three and still recover to challenge shots at the rim. So if you spread him out you severely limit his impact But Rudy was still 7th in playoff plus/minus in the playoffs last year and 2nd in on/off. And even in 20-21 (vs the Clippers) he added +1.53 wins in the playoffs (per inpredictable) So you can _say_ he's "unplayable" but the results say his teams are much better with him than without him even with all his flaws

He's very promising. I seen a lot of things in his 1st game where he was out of place and felt like he was lost in where he should be hanging around the block like he does. So eventually in the highlights you saw he was taken out of the game for their other big who is less of a liability and who can shoot from the perimeter. With that said, I think he'll be okay by his 3rd year if he stays healthy. He needs to get in the reps of watching tape and dissecting each player for what he might face or contend with. He also needs to figure out a way to get his feet quicker at a minimum. He can't rely on his stride to get him there as it's the reason he struggles to recover and cheating on an elite offensive player will place him on a rope every time trying to keep up as they do counters on him. In other words he needs to go the Kobe route in order to get better if he wants to prove he has a place in this 3pt shooting league beyond being a journeyman. He needs to maximize his effort on the Mikan Drill to continue improve his put back ability when shots are missed. He needs to contact Hakeem to get his foot work better. He needs to contact Kareem on that Hook so he can get more versatile with his favorite shot selections beyond shooting from the front of the rim. He needs to contact Duncan on that Bank Shot so he can pull his Big ass out of the Block making him more an offensive asset between 7'- and 15' from the basket. This will also make the defense respect him giving hos teammates more look to pass to him or Ja to slip into the paint uncontested by a big more often. He needs to contact Shaq on that strong side sealing spin move so he can effectively scare his opponents into wanting to play straight up with him for fear of humiliation since he can jump higher than 3" off the ground. He needs to contact Ben Wallace for some shot blocking timing pointers. He needs to contact Rodman for some rebounding pointers. He needs to contact Stockton and Nash for some passing tips.

Most of the "good defensive possesions" are against rotational players. Is easier to defend Mathurin and Turner pick n roll, that Haliburton and turner for example or Olivier Maxence Prosper as a handler than Luka. He was not so great against starting fives even at preseason. And of course it's essential the handler not to be a good shooter, because "under" at screens is the only option for Edey

I think he will at the absolute minimum he as serviceable as Adams if he is given consistent opportunity to improve. Just mho tho.

Why do we have to be so extreme all the time? Is he a generational talent, no. Is he a perinneal All-Star? Depends on the strength of the C position, his teammates, and record. He's not going to be a lock. Is he a starter in this league? Absolutely! I don't understand why that's not a great accomplishment. He's an upgrade from Steven Adams, who is an impactful starter on playoff teams. In a weak draft, why isn't that successful?

Lot of video of guys missing wide open shots. Not saying you're wrong, but Edey was at best an average defender in college. Don't quite buy it in the pros at this point, but I guess we'll see.

He will play 14-16 minutes a game unless he learns to shoot 3s. He’s not winning ROY.

Edey will be fine in the league his rim protection is good, he will get exploited at times just because he is naturally slow footed but he will be good plus he’s gonna have triple J ready to swat a ball into the stands from the weak side.

Watching this video just makes me realize how great Wemby is. He lierally is better in every aspect: mobility, timing, smoothness, hand & eye coordination, putting a hand in balls coming in the lane... Just everything

@@babobenson5203 Sure Edey and Wemby's teamates are at the same level. Literally if Edey sits on the bench 100% of the time the Grizzlies are likely to be ahead of the Spurs 😂

How did 7 foot 4 with size(not skin and bones) with a soft touch and mean footwork not look like it would "translate" to the NBA? You mfs tweakin 😂😂 yet wembys skinny ass was the talk of the town. I know we're obsessed with threes but sometimes I'd rather take a 60% 2 than a 30% 3 🤷 I mean the goal is to still score my points right? Remember he has the one thing that CANT be taught, the rest is young and ready to mold...

I don’t think he will ever have Wemby’s talents. So he should forget the Finesse game, and go the brut force route. He should bulk up to 400 pounds and punish people like Shaq did back in the day
