As an avid Vtuber Watcher, i can say that everyone was correct in some way during the vtuber debate. Corporate vtubers like the ones signed to Hololive or Nijisanji are told to keep their private life and identity as secret as possible to avoid Bjork situations I'd assume, and are the ones that you see on The iPad™ during meet and greets at conventions and shit Unsigned vtubers, aka Indies are the ones like Mouse, Laimu, Dokibird, Mint Fantome, and anyone else who isn't signed to a billion dollar corpo deal are usually free to conduct themselves as they see fit, so they can just show up to their birthday parties however they want. the "hiding their face and can't be seen irl" thing is just like an aspect of vtubing like singing the national anthem at a baseball game. They do it because it's tradition and 'it's always been that way' but some people are really avid about it, but you could just skip over it and still have the baseball game if you wanted to.

Even the corporate vtubers can hold in person private events, they just can’t do so in a way that is connected to the company in an official or unofficial capacity, or in a way that is compromising to their identity. Having or going to events IRL, even semi-public ones, is perfectly fine, they just have to do it as their normal human persona and not of their vtuber alias. Also a lot of corporate streamers have a decent history and prior following in the content creator space (which is often a large reason why they get signed in the first place) and so the paper trail is significant, and a smaller but not insignificant number of them maintain their PL (past life) accounts up to and not limited to streaming with their actual face. It varies from company to company and from streamer to streamer, so you can’t really give such black and white delineation.
@irakyl4 ай бұрын
There's still one thing that I don't understand about vtubing as a whole that I have never heard anyone address. I hope you, as a vtuber connoisseur, could explain it. What exactly is special about vtubing? At first I thought it was just an alternative to a facecam, so it would be silly to make sweeping statements about everyone in that category. Before, there were streamers with facecam and without facecam, and now the vtuber model acts as an in-between. So all it is, is a type of visual medium. So obviously, obviously, it doesn't make sense for Aiden to say "I thought all vtubers did X" this episode, like it wouldn't make sense to say "all youtubers do X" or "all twitch streamers do X" or "all streamers without a facecam do X". Your comment validates this for me, because obviously with so many different groups of people involved everyone has their own perspective on X. Except that's not true, vtubing is more than just a type of visual medium. Clearly there is something that gave Aiden that impression, I'm guessing it's the (ontology of a) surrounding community. Vtubing is 'a thing', whereas streaming without a facecam is not. There is no "no facecam community". You can call yourself an avid vtuber watcher, but no one calls themselves 'an avid facecam-streamer watcher'. Those are just arbitrary facets of a streamer, while 'vtuber' is often the pre-eminent facet of a streamer. People say "I've been getting into vtubers" in a way you wouldn't describe other mediums. And the vtubers themselves are all anime characters. The only one I can think of that isn't, is CodeMiko, and I'd say she predates the vtubing era. I'm guessing Aiden sees the whole of vtubing as a content group like Faze Clan or OTV, where you can talk about the whole and have it make sense. Kinda. And I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that's also how it started out: when the movement-tracking technology became more available, this new medium became available, and orgs like Hololive formed, with a dedicated community, like OTV's. And it was everyone's dream to join such an org, so they all emulate their style. Nowadays I'm guessing it's not everyone's dream anymore to join such an org, but I'm guessing they're still the big players with a lot of influence. Before the movement-tracking tech, there also existed a type of youtuber called pngtubers, where they just have images for common expressions and actions, and flip between them in lieu of a facecam. This is done manually, so it can't be done live, so the pngtubers only existed in youtube videos, not in livestreams like vtubers. But there was no larger 'pngtuber community', and no one ever said "I've been getting into these pngtubers lately". It was purely a medium. Though if I really dig I think I remember a sentiment where pngtubers had a reputation for just making videos complaining about media they consume, but this wasn't widespread, in my view at least. And similarly to facecam it just makes you so much more recognisable, or could even be preferred when you're trying to make a brand of yourself like most streamers are. So I suppose I answered my own question. It started out as a medium and became a community. And different people interface with things differently. But if you have any insight you could share I'd love to hear it.
@DeltaEntropy4 ай бұрын
@@irakyl It's hard to make generalizations since the 2020 boom really widened the EN market and content space and these day's, the unique aspects of V-tubing are somewhat diluted and relegated to the more hardcore or corporate v-tubers and a lot of v-tubers, particularly indies and small agency v-tubers are far closer to just being traditional streamers with a model, but there's still some things to be said. What makes V-tubing special isn't unique to V-tubing, but what it is, is a new medium of creative expression that can allow people who don't fit the mold of traditional streaming to flourish under slightly different rules and with slightly different tools. People who are shy about their appearance or aren't comfortable with having a public online presence, or who aren't comfortable with showing off their whole, real personality, can use the character to distance themselves from their streaming persona, creating a mental separation between the online space, and IRL, that can be really beneficial. There is also the whole business of anonymity that many V-tubers enjoy, though many others either had a notable following before V-tubing and their identity is public knowledge, or choose to face reveal themselves, either to explore other more traditional forms of content such as IRL streaming, or so that they don't have to worry about being recognized in public from voice or mannerisms or having their identity leaked through various means. That's not to say that V-tubers are less genuine than face-cam streamers, just that the "playing a character" aspect of streaming is something that is accepted in V-tubing and not just unsaid or even denigrated as in traditional streaming culture. All performers and entertainers mask and put on a character to an extent, but no one expects an actor to actually be the character they play, while they might expect a talk show host to be the same person on and off camera. Same with V-tubing vs traditional streaming, though the difference isn't as stark as with acting and entertainment. There is also a lot more room for creative expression in V-tubing. If a traditional streamer made up fantastical stories about themselves, most people would find it pretty cringy, or even dishonest, but since V-tuber characters aren't real people, that doesn't apply and so you can have V-tubers who are dragons from magical lands or time travelers from the future or manifestations of ideas like time or death, and that's just an accepted part of the art of v-tubing. Of course, many V-tubers don't have super indepth lore, and some just pay lipservice to it as part of tradition, but others use it to make content, art, stories, outfits, improv bits, etc, which is something that is much harder to do as a traditional streamer. Something also needs to be said about the "weebiness" of v-tubing. V-tubing started in japan and was already out of it's infancy when it spread to the west in the EN boom of 2020, and so the influence of Japanese online and "otaku" culture lies deep in the greater v-tubing culture, especially since the largest V-tubing companies are still based and often wholly operating out of Japan. While this may put some people off, it gives v-tubers and viewers a common cultural touchstone and shared interests and language that traditional streaming has (pepega, _____ andy, etc) but that is wholly confined to traditional streaming, where as V-tubers share that language with the wider weeb and otaku community. Side note, I don't think referring to Hololive and similar as "orgs" is accurate. They're talent agencies, and so from a business perspective function very different. I'm not going to go into all of it here, since it's very complicated (and with the Niji drama, somewhat contentious) but there's some major differences between how "corpo" v-tubing works on the backend. I would say it's accurate for smaller v-tubing agencies such as V-Shojo, but that's a whole different conversation. Side, side note: PNG-tubers still exist, and now exist in streaming. For many they're a low-cost (tracking + modeling + rigging + assets can easily run well over 2k for decent quality) alternative to V-tubing, or as a stepping stone to start off with until streaming becomes more viable as you build a following. Some of them get a lot of mileage out of what might seem on the surface a very simple system. Side, side, side note: there actually exists a third, unwanted step child of V-tuber, called V-tweeters, who as the name implies are "v-tubers" who don't actually stream or create content, but instead are dead set on building a following on X-formally-known-as-twitter before they debut to hundreds of viewers and fans. They're tactics of farming impressions and parasitically attaching themselves to real v-tubers is rarely successful, and many of them are forever trapped in that limbo of having put in all this effort but never seeing the numbers of fans grow to the point at which they feel comfortable with taking the leap to stream, which makes them as a community often very toxic and frustrated, particularly to those who they see as successful and who it seems that success came naturally or through luck and circumstance.

ok for the vtuber section, from someone who is DEEEEEEP in the vtuber sauce: Lud is so wrong about Aiden being dumb to ask questions. The vtuber space goes so fucking deep and can be really complicated at times so Aiden is so in the right to be asking his questions. Ludwig knows next to fucking nothing about vtubers other than being friends with him so he legit had ZERO authority to say if its dumb or not IMO. To answer Aiden's question about the ipads: Privacy truly depends on the person when it comes to indie side of things. for people who are in corporations, espcially the big ones, you do not talk about their previous personas (if they had one) outwardly and they cannot show their face or body in any means (for example, handcam streams have to be worn with gloves and long sleeves so 0 skin is exposed lmao). Indeodendent vtubers can kinda do whatever they please- so Ironmouse could show her face if she wanted, which is a major idfference, but she choses not to due to her own saftey. Yes, Ironmouse is the probably a famous example of someone who uses an ipad to communicate, but a lot of vtubers call in from home for conventions which can be shown on iPads or big screens. I think Aiden may have been referring to someone in Holostars as the "Japanese guy", but I'm unsure tbh. Also if they were to ever want to bring a vtuber on the yard, they should DEF ask Connor/Trash Taste since they had Mori Calliope on before- I'm pretty sure she came in studio and they rigged it somehow. Tbh it would be super cool to see if at all possible!!! I'm aware the boys + no one cares about this but i had to share bc i am incredibly brainrotted.
